guideing service in mccall

Yha, the forest service has been known to "deal" with unlicensed guides. Don't go there. Something tells me Tamarack would being willing to sell you anything they have.

I would disagree with Tamarak selling it. If you think Tamarak is done you might believe that, but if you think that there is a ling term adgenda to let all the debt be dismissed thru the courts before another investor comes in and moves forward again, then you would understand why they would keep it as a sellable asset. Too much there to let it all dwindle away. Andre and Stephy are still moving forward on their cabin, just put a hold on the restaurant. There is a lot of politics going on there.;)

I figured the courts would order all assets sold. I completely expect someone else to come in and pick up the pieces. I think the same thing happened at Big Sky, two or three times, before it became stable. I'm actually wondering when land will bottom out around Tamarack, might be a good investment.

I can't begin to say how happy and appreciative I am for the time Phil & Jeremy spent showing my boys and I around. This was not a guide situation, just those two being good guys to a few newbys. That said, I am still kind of a tough crowd, I am an old hen when it comes to the safety and well being of my boys and their friends. I was then and am still on full alert when riding with anyone new, in new terrain, as I am watching for issues that might be overlooked but are concerning to me.

I was surprised and impressed at the level of concern shown for us and the efforts made to make sure we were accounted for and riding terrain that was challenging but not over our (mostly my) abilities.

I have paid for lots of guided sled trips and my weekend with Phil as a SW'er asking for free McCall tips was as first class as any paid trip.

I would book with you for sure. What about this weekend? I hope you go for it, I think your combination of being a great guy and a skilled rider with great local knowledge would make a good fit for those of us who look for those opportunities. I'd pay extra for helmet cam/conventional footage of my boys doing cool stuff too. One less thing for me to monkey with as I try to keep up. I'd cherish the idea of their kids laughing at them like my boys do at me when my youth home movies are played. I thought I was a pretty good football player, high tops or not. LOL. EW

So Ill have to pay you next time Phil??? Nothing good ever lasts.:(
I hope you do it. I think you could do well with this if you market it correctly. If it were me Im not sure I would do the family crowds myself. Beacons and probes manditory maybe? You have plenty of people to vouch for you to get started. Good luck. Kris

i may be mistaken but I believe tamarack has the permit for valley county. Where we would be parking is upper elevation which is in new meadows, adams county. should not be a problem to get one. I have talked to a buddy who works for the fs and he says to get a permit for the north part of valley I would have to prove tamarack does not come up there which now would be easy to do. Will look more into this.

EW-get on down here!!! it will be the beast riding this season.

Hey jeremey bent tunnel guy-i cant do that if the little poo is going to bend tunnels! ahahahahahahah just kiddin. hopefully you will be moving to mccall.

you would need to get your outfitters licences to guide in the area.
Pirate guiding only go so far for so long. You will be teaching people to ride. IF you rent the sleds, you will be fixing them everynight and morning.

I say go for it. just look at the whole thing. Do you get the riders and sleds to the hill or just meet them there. Are you renting sleds also, what about safety factors, etc.

Sounds like a good idea for the area. Everyone I have talk too lately have been singing yours and JKinzer's praises for your riding ability, knowledge of the area, and your overall outlook on life. I say do it!

you need an outfitters license.

to get that, you need a bunch of stuff, of which by far the hardest is getting a FS permit.

FS permits are issued by forest. You would be after a permit from the Payette National Forest. Currently there is only one permit for the entire forest, which like others have mentioned is owned by Tamarack.

I believe there are a number of people in line to get the next permit. Pat Hill, a realtor in McCall is first or second, and the guy who had the snowmobile rental business before Darrel is also right near the top.

You might consider using the Winter Recreation Committee to get it done. The Winter Rec Committee is run by the FS, with the manager of Brundage setting the Agenda of the meetings.

Scott Kump (Fatrunt on Snowest) from Adams county does a HUGE and very appreciated job of keeping an eye on them and protecting snowmobiler rights, and there are a few others like Krahn and Cruickshanks who also attend the meetings with a view towards tourism in general.

You might consider operating under Tamarack's license. The guys in charge of the sled program are REALLY nice guys, and looking to introduce folks to the sport and make a profit.

doug,

thanks for the info.

I talked to a guy from the fs, dont remember his name. and that is right for one permit in payette NF. However, he said if I can prove tamarack does not use this part of the forest that I am looking at than there is an exception?

no one guides anything north of mccall right now. so mabe I can get one for that area.

Randy Hall, who ran the snowmobile system last I checked, does not like me, When I did him a favor by findind a stolen sled for him, he called 3 months later snd threatened me that I knew where the other one was, there was 2 stolen. We dont get alnog very well and i doubt he would want to work with me.

Will get started on permits, lisc.

Thanks for input everyone.

The guy at the FS that you might want to talk to is Gary Elliott, or at least he would know who to talk to about this and he is aware of your plan. An other idea would be maybe working together with Chuck and Peggy at Cheap Thrills, they rent the sleds and you guide the ones who want or need guiding???? Just a thought as an alternative or cheaper way to get going, but they may not be interested. Spud.
