Looking at the weather and the Mesa is and has been good. Was up last week and had a great time. Talked to Mike at Grand Mesa Lodge and they have great conditions. For those who ride the trails on the Mesa the groomer has been repaired due to a few people's hard work , oh by the way they donate the time to repair. If you have ever spent any time working under a groomer in the cold you know this is no picnic.

Another great reason to come to the Grand Mesa!

Great conditions

Spent 4 days up on the Mesa. Snow was awesome and weather was good. Thanks to Mike and Rose at Grand Mesa Lodge. I so wanted to spend d a few more days.

My cousin and I just got back from the Mesa and spent five nights at Thunder Mountain Lodge. We had an awesome time! The owners, Jeff and Jessica were awesome people to deal with and the cabins were very nice. We rode about 30-35 miles per day, almost none of which was trail. You can have awesome riding right from the cabins if your willing to just duck in the trees and boondock. If that's not your thing there are a ton of trails on the Mesa, it would make a great place to bring wife and kids to ride.

These were Feb 6th before it got warm. Sounds like it has set up since then but there was plenty of snow, I wouldn't worry about that. And who knows when the next storm rolls in. It can happen overnight. I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Grand Mesa Riding and Lodging

My riding group is from South Dakota and we are looking at possibly traveling out to the Grand Mesa for the first time. We are wondering where the majority of boondocking and meadow riding is in relation to either Grand Mesa and Thunder Mountain Lodges? Either of these lodges better than the other, or others in the area that you can ride from the door? How is the road getting into these, is it a long trip off I-70?

GML and TML are 2 miles from each other, you ride out the door of both.

TML has sweet cabins that were all renovated in the last year. I'm looking forward to going back there and riding with Jeff (Kieper- his last name and screen name on here).

Coming up from 70 the road has a crap load of tight corners until you get to Mesa, but you won't encounter snow until you're past the ski area. The road is paved the whole way.

Tons of boon docking and meadow riding from the front door of either. Just hit the trees right away and you will find plenty of meadows as you go. No cell service at tml but they have wifi. A mile up the road at Alexander lodge they have a cell phone booster. We stop in their bar to make calls while having a beer. Plenty of room at gml and tml to turn a big trailer around, a bit more congested at Alexander lodge. Bring food to cook if you choose tml, they have full kitchens. The town of cedar edge is about a 15 min drive from the Mesa. Not much for food but a nice grocery store that is open until nine. Buy your tags ahead of time or online. The lodges don't sell them. Gml might but you have to let them know in advance. Tml also sells gas.

deanearl- Grand Mesa

Great place for a trip. Been going for years and always find new areas. Lots of riding in meadows or boon docking, Nice trail system and maps available at Grand Mesa Lodge and I believe the other lodges may have them. Gas at Grand Mesa Lodge (non ethanol) and Thunder Mountain. All the lodges have kitchens in cabins. Only restaurant-bar is at Alexander Lake Lodge. Parking at visitor center or your lodge. Parking can be tight over at Alexander. Drive from I-70 is good and paved all the way. You won't see much snow till after Powder Horn Ski area. Check Colorado CDOT site before trip as we have had some road closure issues in Glenwood Canyon. I have stayed at all three lodges over the years and yes owners have changed on all three, but we enjoy and highly recommend Grand Mesa Lodge. Mike and Rose are great host with nice clean real comfy cabins with fully equipped kitchens (Bring food)they do have a small store. Also the groomer for the local club runs out of this lodge. Thunder Mountain has just reopened after a fire in the restaurant - bar and a change in ownership. We have not stayed here for years,no real reason. WIFI at all three lodges. Night life is not what these places are about. Dealerships all brands are about a hour away. You will have a great time. Going up the first week of March and Can't wait.

Better bring your short tracks, the weather outlook sucks!

Thanks for the information. I have been watching the snow and the outlook...doesn't look too promising. Sounds like a great place to ride and have been contemplating going that direction for a few years now. With the amount of snow I would imagine all the land mines are covered and wouldn't have to worry about rocks or stumps? Is there usually good snow fall in late Feb and into March?
