Curious if people ride with GPS units and if you guys think it is mandatory to have with you, just like a beacon.

we are lucky to have a huge roadless area for us to ride in, so yes i always have my gps. when riding in this area wouldn't leave the truck without it. if i did mostly trail riding and was in an area i knew i probably wouldn't bother. so in certain situations i'd say its mandatory, in others not. i guess it also depends on how good you can read a map and if you have a strong sense of direction or not. never hurts to have it...

I never leave the truck without it. I have a Garmin Rino 650, last 2 yes I used the 530.

It's always on and in track mode.
I've used it to "track back" thru the dense Mt. Baker fog from up on top after playing in the sunshine(you know what that's like Ruff).
Used the radio feature more time than I can count.
It's great to keep the track of the " secret spots " you've found too.

IMO, it's my #2 must have device, right after my Beacon/shovel/probe.

I always carry my Garmin 76CS. It can be a life saver in remote backcountry, especially when the clouds and/or snow rolls in and conditions become "whiteout".

We use the Rinos. Handlebar mounted so they will stay on and in use. Some of the guys started with them in their pockets because they were too tight to buy a mount. They don't work in your pocket.

They are a nice tool if the weather changes, fog, snow, daylight, etc. but they should not be replacing common sense.

We like the peer-to-peer feature of finding people for lunch, stuck sleds, etc.

If you are out looking for something or boondocking around you can keep track of where you were, or use it to find where you want to go. It is handy to reference terrain ahead of you, or find a lake, road, saddle that you want to ride to. If you use a map, you may not know exactly where you are on the map.

It is kind of fun to watch top ground speed for lake runs or hill climbs.

I am going to try out the Voyager GPS from trail tech this season. I got if for my bike, but never put it on.

Hell yes. There has been many times that all I could see while trying to ride out in a blizzard was the screen on my gps. Mine stays mounted to the handlebars at all times.

Been using one sense the late 90's all of them have been Garmin. Tried a Magellan once and did not like it but that was early 2000. I always carry it and it has saved my *** on a few occasions, super dense fog to the light going out on my sled and needing the gps to find my way out. It's come in handy for life flight and other emergency situations. I currently have the Rino 530xl but am looking at getting their new one with Google Earth maps downloaded into it.

I also have a Spot Locator and that is nice to keep family up to date and for emergency situations.

One thing is the technology is changing all the time and as cell towers get better cell phones are starting to take some of the market, but not all.

What exact GPS two-way radio models are you all using? Would be interesting to know which work best for our sport.

ride with a gps

i never leave the truck without mine, it is always on and in track mode. there have been several times in last few years when fog or storm has forced me to use it to track back to safety. it is as important as my survival pack.

I currently have the 530hcx model and it is pretty good, though honestly I have never needed to use the gps function. I would like to get rid of it as I could use the money for other things...

Garmin Rino 530 hcx. It is always with me and always on! I cant even count the number of times it has saved my bacon when the snow was coming down or the fog rolled in. Being able to locate my buddies electronically, is an incredible feature.

It is always with me when i am dirt biking and exploring new trails in the mountains. No fog or snow, of course, but being able to follow the "cooking crumb" trail back, or see where a particular trail leads is priceless!!

Cheers!

It seems like most like the rino's to ping your friends... none of my friends have them though, so that feature is pretty worthless.

I don't know.. they are handy, but I mostly ride where I know, or others know. I don't ride bad foggy areas unless it is in the trees..

I know many people like them and use them, but 300 - 400 bucks is a lot for something that isn't used like it should all the time.

I've been looking at the rino 530hcx for this season. what kind of deals are you all seeing on them and how do they stand up to being mounted to the handlebars or dash on these sleds with rollovers and cold weather and such? do they ever pop out of the mounts?

I have a Garmin Nuvi Hand held with Topographical Maps that shows snowmobile trails!! I use it a lot in the trees, trying to find my way back to the trail when riding in areas I am not familiar in!!! It makes me feel more comfortable when exploring!!

A GPS is a must have imo. It has saved my life a bunch of times. White out conditions, unfamiliar areas etc. Set it up to leave a bread crumb trail. We all carry a garmin rino. 2 way radios are way nice too to find that stuck buddy in the trees.

I use a Delorme PN60. Tend to use it more when exploring new zones, I rarely put it on the bars anymore at more at places I know well but usually I have in my pack just in case..

I have 2 rino 530's and the speaker quit working on one of them and since garmin no longer supports the 530 I need to buy a new one.

I was wondering if the 530's are compatible with the 530 hcx?
Will all features work back and forth or do I need to buy 2?

Sorry for the thread jack!
