I can certainly understand what the Principal is trying to do here BUT I think all it will do is polarize the non Native American students against those Native American students who are getting Ipods, etc.

I know that I would be pretty pissed if I were a student there and I wasn't "eligible" to receive such an award.

It makes me wonder what some people are thinking when they do stuff like this. You can't fix stupid!!!!!

That is totally BS, what would happen if a white principle did that sh*t with white kids only......SH*T would hit the fan!! They alredy get free college and money from the govn what more do they want. Yes ok....we put them on reservations but that was a long time ago, get over it. They have the ability to be like everyone else to be a productive member of society, and im not saying there arent some who are, but you find most of them unemployeed and drunk. I have some relatives that live by a casino and some of the big wigs that are making millions off the casinos have homes that look sh*tter than cardboard boxes that homeless people live in...they treat their stuff like crap. When I worked at a car dealership changing oil the big head dude from a local casino would come in to get his oil changed. No matter what time of day he was half bombed and was so drunk once we called the cops on him. He would buy a new top of the line truck every 6 months and it was TRASHED in 2 months. They would come in so nasty I would take a smoke break so I didnt have to touch the POS...Oh and I dont even SMOKE!

My wife received her masters last year and there was nothing free about any of the schooling she has went through. As for people in management positions (big wigs) there is plenty of non-native people that have an addiciton to alcohol also.

As far as college funding goes.. it all depends on what tribe you are from.. most of the time you need 1/4 indian or more in your blood.. and have to be a member of the tribe.. as far as other management positions being held by not native people and being alcoholics.. not going to disagree there are some yes.. but the percentage of natives that are is far more than not.. On a reservation over 68% of people from the ages of 25-55 are alcoholics!!.. Just the facts

I don't disagree with you that there is a alcohol problem, but there is plenty of non-natives that have the same problem and live the same life style as native americans. As for free college to the native americans i am not aware of any free college in North or South Dakota

Hell there indians, and its rapid city Quite a few sit high in politics in that area. Wouldnt be surprised if the guy who manages Kota territory news IS indian, and the principle is his brother. I guess just keep trying, if all else fails, teach your kids to steal Ipods from indians

"here you go stumbling buffalo, for coming to school for a stretch of two whole weeks in a row, you get this ipod so you have something to occupy your time while you're sitting in boring ol' class..." You would think the huge per capita check they get when they graduate is incentive enough to go to class. And yes, the tribes I am familiar with in Washington pay for their young'ns to go to college.

I have done some checking into this and what i heard is that the principal at the school put in for a NATIVE AMERICAN grant and that ALL the kids will get incentives from this grant. I am not sayn that there isn't some tribes out there that doesn't help pay for their youth to further their education, but it isn't for all tribes.

I don't have time th read through this whole thread right now because I have to go to class, but I have personally lived through this, I want to high school at lakeland union high school in Minocqua Wisconsin, and If you make a big stink about how natives get preferential treatment, you will be the one made out to be a racist.

I have tried doing this myself, mainly because in out cafeteria, they Had a Ojibwa flag hanging HIGHER and to the RIGHT of the American flag, I *****ed about it for the entire four years of my high school career, and It even stated this should not e done on the inside front cover of every history book in the school...

I wish something could be done, but they have the federal government wrapped around their greedy red fingers; we are the ones who are paying for the iopds....

I could care less if white people or native americans are in a management position and drink a case of beer everynight after work, as long as they show up to work and do their job thats their own business. Its the ones that drink beer all day and depend on the taxes out of my paycheck to get them by because they dont have a job... that piss me off. I also never said that its just people on the res that do this, white people do it too, but if you look at the demographics you can see what the percentage is. I graduated with a girl in highschool that is 1/4 indian and her parents make at least $100K a year...she gets a check for being a native american in a state college every month. Maybe she doesnt get all of school paid for but she gets alot more every month than i do for being white. Besides all that, the point is if he is using public money to buy things that only native americans can have its total bull sh*t. Even if its a grant for native americans from native americans he should not do it in a public school setting, ipods and all that sh*t should be given away for doing things outside the school, some type of community services they could do. Im pretty sure I never got an iPod in high school for showing up.

Nothing will change. There will always be a group that wants or needs to be made special. Giving a prize for going to school will only perpetuate the problem in the first place. It's like giving your 16 year old a brand new car with no strings attached. In 2 weeks the car looks like a POS and you can't figure out why. How about a special program for natives whereby they go to school and if they attend, do the work and pass, they graduate. And if you graduate and are smart, you get a really nice career and someone pays you money to do something. Sounds novel doesn't it. We've created this monster with our political correctness and trying to be all inclusive. The part that gets me is that in Canada we're paying huge dollars for dirty priests that fooled around in residential schools 50 years ago. I wasn't there, I never did it, I understand your pain but don't make me pay for it.

I'm thinking it's all the lawyer's fault.
