GM- Snow depth how bad is it?????

Just wondering if any can confirm what I heard from a Old Timer on the Grand Mesa last week. He said "This is the lowest snow he has ever seen this time of year" he has been coming up every year since 1986. I have only been sledding of the GM for the last 7 years and have not seen it this low before. Just wondering if it is as bad as it seems? :face-icon-small-sad

In my sixteen years sledding around Montrose this is the worst I can remember seeing it. Bad enough that on new years day me and the wife drove our jeep up transfer rd. to divide rd. on top of the uncompaghre. Not good!

Worst i've seen in 20 winters of living in Colorado. I really thought we'd see a change in the weather pattern in the last part of December. Glad I'm going to BC in March. On a good note, if the stats listed below repeat themselves we'll have three monster yrs coming up.

If your bored here are some very detailed snow stats from the RMBL (N of Crested Butte).

i guess its who ya talk to or the internet.....

the locals says its the worst conditions they can remember....

but then some 'guy' on snowest says he was just up there and rode untracked fields of dry powder...and TML is running off customers cause there's too many sleds up there...and he saw CB tearing up the place....

you chose.

if i was in the a-arm business....I'd be recommending the GM every year.

Not real good. I have seen it worse. Won't say when. It will date me back to the Dino's. :face-icon-small-win:face-icon-small-hap

GM needs snow as does everywhere. Not sure where the "guy" found fresh untracked fields of powder. I rode around a lot last week getting some miles on the new PRO and found pockets here and there but it is very sugary with no bottom to speak of. Have a group here today and am going to check out some spots. I know where this "guy" was riding and it is far less than ideal! Wish I could say differently as it is our livelyhood but it is what it is. We need snow.

good to see some real and honest reports. Where I live it's the worst I have seen in my entire life. We went out over New Years coyote huntng and drove the entire Wolford loop, which is normally impassable this time of year. Actually thinking of headed out to Burns/McCoy to ride dirtbikes Friday. I have never ridden my bike in January. Just a very weird start to Winter.

I'm with Pj ive never seen it this bad in my entire life. My folks and some other old timers up here can remember a couple of winters in the early 60's or late 50's like this. I dunno but making the best of it and dirtbiking or whatever floats your boat is the right thing to do! Good thing I waited till this year to get a new sled for me and my wife hahaha oh well. :face-icon-small-dis

76-77 was grim. There were few ski areas that could open the whole mountain. Not much man made snow back then. Cloud seeding started after that. I did not sled at that time, but did a lot of skiing. A Basin and Eldora were a couple of the ski areas that were open and it was very limited at best. The summer following was a drought ridden time. Lots of restrictions.

Hope and pray for this system to clear out and get winter back on track.:pray:

76 - 77 you had to ride the chair to Mid-Vail to ski. No snow making then. That year will always stick out in my mind as the worst......and this one.

Sam, rode out at Mack again on Monday kinda a fun system! Met a guy named Marty(KTM,BMW) who gave us a tour. Thought you might know him! Sorry forgot his last name! Also last time you asked if Pete P. was with us. he was not. Might have to hit you up for some other secret stash riding spots that might be dry. Odd year we are snowed out low for MC and lack snow high for sledding!:face-icon-small-dis

And then the next 2 or 3 seasons were incredible.

We are off to a little better start than 76-77. Keep praying for snow.:face-icon-small-hap

LOLOL! Mark can fight his own battles I think. Following me around giving negs to all my posts is kinda childish too I think.

Please wait to call me a liar in person I would prefer that. :face-icon-small-win

Sorry I didn't take a pic of the field/meadow to the right of this guess you have to take my word on it.

G.M. Snow

We just spent a week up on the Mesa and as said found pockets of fair snow.

What we did find is like sugar snow and no base. We had to be carefull and I still banged up a A arm and the Mesa is known for rocks.

I have never seen it this thin this time of year. I have talked to people all over Colorado, Utah Wyoming and we need snow BAD!!!!

Yes, sugar and no base. As said previous I banged up a front end also the first day. Second day though we had a blast, not nearly as good as last year of course but enough powder to have fun.

Stingray719- I have hit rocks on the GM with a lot more snow then what is up there now, so don't feel bad. The best part about the low snow condition on the GM is that it helps you remember what parks to ride in when we get snow. :face-icon-small-hap
I wonder if we can pay are local crop duster to seed the clouds!:face-icon-small-dis
