How many guys have had to replace these? What kind of parts did you use? How about wheel hubs have you guys replaced these also? At how many miles did you guys have to do this stuff.

Just replaced mine on my 2003 2500hd this year with 78000 on it. It's pretty common on these trucks especially once you go to larger aftermarket wheels and tires.

As for replacement parts I went with GM parts and a Cognito support kit. Moog had a quality control issue a few years ago but that has supposedly been corrected so you could go either way.

The pitman is a royal PITA as there is little space to work with. This guy did a fantastic write up on it for reference:

Replaced drivers side hub at 75k. Everything else seems to be holding up fine. I have read up on the hubs and seems like at least one will go out like clock work right around the 75k mile mark.

easiest way to replace the pitman is to cut a slit on it but dont go all the way through, then take a chisel and a hammer and spread it, then few taps on the pitman and it'll fall off.

take out the steering box bolts, then put one back in with your ahnd so you can move the box, then use a pitmn arm puller and it will come off easy.

yeah replaced both hubs around 70,000. Pitman and idler at about 80,000. Had the hole in the transfer case at about 90,000. I have gotten ALL of the common chevy problems. Even just replaced a fuel pump at 100,000. Can't complain too much though. 100,000 is alot of miles. especially being off road a lot and a lift doesn't help all those parts either. You do the work yourself and can save thousands on all those parts!!

Maybe on some brands....My Toyota customers would burn the dealership to the ground if they had those known issues with only 100,000 miles and had to pay for it out of pocket....lol

Well that is very true. I have a toyota also. Only about 50K on it so far. Haven't had to put a single penny in it! Nothing but gas and oil. If they made a 3/4 ton it would definatly be mine!

I have put 3 sets of idler/Pitman arms on my 02 Duramax. Cant seem to keep the slop out of them. Used GM, and TRW.

put 2 sets in my 05 Duramax still same issue. Still feels loose. Goodluck

Cognito front parts with upgraded tie rod sleeves we have them in stock let me know if you need anything

My truck 2002 GMC 2500hd has needed 2 steering shafts. They are known to get loosie goosie and it feels like loose tie-rod ends but is actually the shaft. Really noticeable when turning and there are bumps in the road. About $150. First one done under warranty around 25,000. Next one done around 65,000 but I put up with the looseness for quite a while before getting it fixed.

I believe Borg-warner makes a stronger unit but I opted for the OEM from the dealer because they offer lifetime warranty as long as I own the truck.
