Get kids on a dirt bike or ATV?

Is it better to start kids under 10 on a dirt bike or ATV?

Would you rather have your 7 year old ride a dirt bike or an atv? There are pros and cons to both, just don't know which to steer my son toward.

Lets start with a Bicycle first, my Dad taught me how to ride on a full size bicycle without training wheels and I have never needed training wheels since and I have been hooked on two wheels eversince:face-icon-small-coo

X2^ Both my daughters (5and 10) ride with me!

Show me that statistic

I feel they're safer because they have 4 wheels. I've had both dirt bikes and atv's and the atv's have always been safer and more stable for me

I knew you didn't have any proof

And I also figured you would try child like tactics of insulting me.

Hope you feel tough, you win the internetz

Hard to find a direct comparison but.......

Safety

The modern breed of ATVs were introduced in the early 1970s and almost immediately realized alarming injury rates for children and adolescents. Based on analysis of the National Trauma Data Bank ATVs are more dangerous than dirt bikes, possibly due to crush injuries and failure to wear safety gear such as helmets

OK, Did some quick research, If you are wearing the proper safety gear and have had the proper training ATVs are no more dangerous than Dirt Bikes and ATVs are not any safer than Dirt Bikes. BUT.............ATV riders are less likely to have training and are less likely to wear proper safety gear so injuries are more common on ATVS than Dirt Bikes.

So take that any way you want.

There are no pros to 4-wheelers unless you're a farmer spraying crops or you have a very large driveway to plow. They are utility vehicles for utilitarian purposes.

Dirt bikes are for FUN like they should be, and are safer than 4-wheelers, period. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't ridden a bike much. I have yet to have my bike roll over on top of me and pin me.

I don't have any stats, I don't have enough give a sh!t to bother with that.
Common sense indicates that when you wreck, the weight & size of the wheeler would be more likely to contribute to an injury than a light motorcycle would.

Now I will play the devils advocate & contradict myself....
Once the skill level has advanced & the kid is jumping, one could argue that the bike will jump higher, farther etc.
I personally don't think that offsets the safety disadvantage I explained in the 1st paragraph.
