i have a 05 900 and have 19/39 gears in it now can i run 19/42 with the stock chain?

No 19/42 won't work with that chain.

You can go 18/40 with the same chain or most guy's go 19/43 and get a 92p chain.

where can i get 18/40 gears or are the 19/43 a better way to go

I've been ok with an 18T in my 06 900 but most people will say the chain is more likely to slip on the smaller 18T gear. I just wanted to try out the lower gearing to see how well I'd like before I bought the chain and all. I like the lower gearing and will see how it goes for now.
