Gasoline prices and the government

Here it is, though I think I was off base with my comments of what it was about. Interesting read though.

BP burns itself

So it looks to me like there was a "local boy" faction at BP, which overall is a pretty massive company, and they screwed themselves over ...

That's fine, and I'm not going to insult anyone's intelligence by saying that other abuses haven't ever taken place in the oil and gas industry ...

... but ...

People act like other industries are exempt from this.

I think the exact opposite is true for the most part ..

But ... the other thing is, I got two words for you all: Election Year.

heh :)

You can corner the market in a number of ways............
control all the gas production.
control all the oil coming into the US.
Work with the other producers to control the flow of gas and oil to drive prices up.
Work with other companies to control the markets (futures and speculation).

The last is what I think is happening right now. After Katrina the big producers discovered they liked getting HUGE profits. So all they had to do was keep the prices high by scaring the market.

Worked pretty good didn't it.

Yeah, but you're kind of saying this same topic wasn't ever discussed before Katrina ... There were a number of times oil companies made "record profits" well before Katrina hit.

I'm %100 positive Katrina had a huge effect on the supply because most all domestic oil production comes from the gulf coast, we're hardley drilling for oil at all on shore anymore as a whole.

Either way, the whole "bash the evil oil companies" bit is nothing new, this has been going on since well before I was born even ...

I mean seriously though ... what is so surprising about massive corporations that employ hundreds of thousands of people worldwide selling a product the entire world needs making "record profits"?

When Microsoft was the most profitable company in the world 10 years ago, the same thing happened to them.

Any time an American corporation does well, half the government decides they're evil and that they need to be decimated ... I guess to me that's the anti-capitalist element in the US government, I don't know, but it's pretty prevalent even when you're not talking about oil companies ..

Like I said, I'm not gonna insult anyone's inteligence here by claiming abuses have never taken place in this industry ... I just think that with this being an election year combined with the fact that the oil and gas industry is such a necessity for the world economy it's a much easier target for politicians to get people riled up about ...

With that said however, and I'm usually the last person on here to complain ... I'm pretty sick of paying damn near a thousand dollars a month in gas to enjoy life too, so I can only immagine how it's effecting people whose business' depend heavily on the cost of fuel.

I don't know, I have to admit I'm a bit biased here because I work in the industry ... from my standpoint having oil companies operating in the Rocky Mountain Region once again has been a boon to the entire economy of the region ... Wyoming especially ... I guess to me and a lot of people working in the patch and having the money to enjoy life once again because they're finally drilling here again is worth paying more for gas ... heh :)

About high gas prices, my opinion is this:

Our govenment as well as other countries around are trying to control global warming with higher gas prices to prevent people from using excessive fuel and push toward green environment......we all know that the global warming is truely happening, if we like it or not.

However, I don't feel that global warming should be controlled to prevent people from using fuel, they need to control the human population. Visit a large city in the summertime and feel the heat; from factories, from buildings collecting heat from the sun, from heated cement, and all the way down from thousands of humans. The human population is what needs to be controlled, rather throughout the entire earth.

The human population is what is growing expontentially, no matter if I cut out my extra curricular activities of driving, the fuel that I use in one year for these extras is still nothing as compared to what the human population is growing.

For instance, I drive 21,000 miles a year on my work car. Maybe 10% of that driving is for extra curricular activities. Eliminate that 10% and you'll find that it is still pennies of what the entire population is growing and will use.

It only makes sense, sad, but true.

WWeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.....................
Actually the average yearly temp (earth as a whole) has cooled .67 degrees since 98. They (the scientist) are estimating this trend will continue into the forseable future (10 years). The scientific community is beginning to question the whole basis for the global warming scare.

That being said, yes governments just as companies recongnize a commondity that will be bought no matter how expensive it is. That is why they tax the dog snot out of it. There are a group of democrats that are floating a 50-75 cent a gallon tax hike to fund the fight on global warming. You know, that pesky thing that has been reversing itself for the last 9 years.

Price of oil is determined on Wall Street which is in New York, in the U.S., who declared war in the Middle East where almost all the oil is so they made a decision to cut production so prices will skyrocket, all this thanks to your President Bush.

did anyone here know that the majority of oil bought by the US is from Canada, not the Middle East!!!!!!!!

Some of the links posted above broke this down by percentage ...

The US imported something like %13 of the oil we processed in US refineries from Canada, and something like %11 was from Saudi Arabia if I remember right ... Saudi Arabia was like #3 , Mexico was #2 ...

Honestly that surprised me, I thought we imported an awful lot more from Saudi Arabia than that.

I guess we can blame Canada and Mexico :D :D :D :D
