gas milage with an 02 summit highmark 800 x

I ride with a widely diverse group of sleds, and my 02 summit high mark is the absolute worst on gas. i am getting somewhere between 5 - 6 miles pergallon. we all ride the same and in the same type of conditions allday. The next closet to being the worst is an iq race sled with a 800 mod motor in it that is gettin around 9mpg. Does anyone else getting milage around this same number with their 02 800? People have recomened I jet it down a couple of sizes, but it is running so good, I dont want to mess with it. any thoughts? thx

I have a 02 800 Summit 144 I would say you numbers are pretty close to what I get. For me I would say I get closer to 6 on day where the snow is powdery loose. With a lot of full throttle pulls. I would say I would get closer to 7 to 9 with the snow is really set up. I just depends on the day and the condtions. I ride with guys that have 04 and 05 800 Revs 144 to 151 when we fill up we all get within a few liters difference.

Ok thx for the reply, I just wanted to make sure I wasnt alone out there with those horrible #'s.

I ride an 02 my buddy bought his new. Both get bad gas mileage. There is a guy on here that claims he knows the fix I will see if I can get him to respond. I have not heard this before another guy just told me. I put a tour Buddy on mine and added 3 gals now I can stay out all day.

Depends on the day we are having, but I have had days where an extra 3 gal tank on the back was not enough. I am now carrying around a 5 gallon tank on the back. It sucks cause its a lot of extra weight. Some times the 5 isnt enought either. Luckly most of my riding buddies all get way better milage so i grab a couple of gallons out of their extra tanks.

The Tour Buddy mounts on the belt cover. I still have room on the back for extra gear if I need it. It uses the gas in the Tour Buddy first. This is a pretty slick out fit. If you find an extra belt guard you can take it off and go with just the rugular tank about as fast as you strap on the 5 gal tank.

That tour buddy sounds cool. Do you have a link to it? thx

8-10 mpg

I run a 02 800. Stock I got 6-7 mpg, I installed hooded needle jets from CPI, they come with adjustable needles. Was able to drop the mains from 500 ...stock down to 410. I now have Boysen reeds witch cleaned up the low end hesitation. Hope this helps. I stayed with the 17.5 pilot jets. Dino

I have spent a few nights in the bush b/c of not having enough gas (6 extree gal one time and 10 extree gal the second time) and have never needed gas enough to put a 3 gal can under my hood - rat above my drive belt!

While I like the concept of the outfit - that just aint the place for it!

'02 800 Doo should be set at:

480 mains
___ ___ 942 (?) needles in the middle slot. This is OEM for a 2000.5 800 Summit/MXZ I believe.
Possibly retard timing 2* from stock. (Dealer)

I have 8000 klicks on this setup from 1000' to 12,000' and down to -30C* on reg pump gas and have not stuck a piston doo to it.

Used prox 30% less fuel.

OX, been running in the bush here in Montana for almost 3 years now and never had a problem. Seen to many gas cans laying on the trail. Although I do love those guys because I always get a few extra gallons that way. lol !! Not sure why you think it's a problem. It doesn't effect getting to the clutches in the least.

if i ever get 60 miles out of a tank of gas on a series 3 800 engine or the r engine, id consider that a good day. thats the same for my 1000 too. it would only be a good day and not a great day because i spent too much time on the trail. a great day is when i barely make 50 miles to a tank. the 21mpg skidoo brags of is for the *****s who ride trails on the flatland and have no comprehension of true sledding. all i look forward to is at the end of the day not having enough energy to load my sled, couldnt give a crap as to how many miles i rode. i did run my r motor out of gas last winter at 42 miles, that was a hard day of riding and a great one at that as i recall.

GAAS woes!!

I just took my 2001 zx 800 to BC rode into Silent Pass,parked at 21km rode into hills about 40 km then ride up switchbacks into area,about 8 little runs at 3 diff hills,then had to go out as 1/4 tnk left,ran out of gas 2 miles from truck! so I guess I got about 100 km from tnk but sure sucks to not be able to ride more,guess I should have remembered my 5 gal jug !:beer;

Big fuel difference between 02 and 01. They went to those worthless hooded carbs in 02. They should have left it alone. One of my buddies rides an 01 and ribs the 2 of us on our 02's and fuel all the time.

Sorry Charlie - no hoods on '02's and it's the '03 hooded carbs that are a desired swap onto the '02's.

BTW - I don't believe there were hoods on the '01's either.
