Future of sleds...with rising fuel prices

I think the bigger issue is fuel costs for tow vehicles. Our diesel vs. sled gas costs aren't even close. High diesel prices mean two things for me (living in Minnesota and riding out west): 1. Fewer trips 2. More people per trip.

Chris.

Fewer trips but maybe longer more enjoyable trips because the more riding and less driving is worth something right there? I would much rather go for a full week, then to take two short trips of only 3-4 days each. It's just too much truck time and not enough ride time. Sure you may get into a sucky time for snow or temperature but for us midwest guys it would have to really suck for it to not be good for the most of us.

We have some pretty descent riding out of the backyard of my parents place, and we can trailer to awsome riding with in a 45 min of my place so trailering cost won't hit me hard.

I wll probaly never own a big hp sled. I can't justify the extra cost of the av fuel. I would love to turbo or a BB one day but that probaly just isn't going to happen.

I recieved a survey in the mail the other day. I can't remember who was conducting it. Basically it asked questions about what kind of sleds I rode/owned, how much I ride, how far I go to ride, etc. One of the interesting questions was, how much would you pay for gas before you stopped riding? Had to think long and hard about that one. Putting gas in my sled is no big deal. Getting my sled somewhere I can actually ride is another thing. The group I ride with is all about economy. We try to pack six guys into a pickup with six sleds on our trailer. Each trip we make cheaper means more trips we go on.

Answer to High fuel costs

Remember when four strokes first came out in the Motocross circuit? The two stroke guys said they would never work. Now, Honda no longer makes two stoke motorcycles in the U.S. Almost all the bikes run in Motocross now are four strokes. They got the weight down(finally) and the power is better.
I am new to sledding this past year and I actually sold my dirt bike and quad
and bought two Yamaha Nitro MTX's. One for me and one for my wife.
I bought at the peak of the High Fuel Prices and I went with four strokes. I went riding this past spring and my buddy rides an RMK 800 with a 163" track
and after a full day of riding we barely made it back to the truck. WE were both on fumes. I used about 6.5 gal of fuel and he went through almost 9.5 gal
including the two stroke oil. I think with some minor mods( cams, pipe, and electronics) the Nitro will be a great sled without the high cost of a turbo.
I think in a few years the industry will only be offering four strokes. I am glad I bought one now.

This is a never changing cycle. The EPA will keep mandating cleaning up the exhaust, gas prices will rise and hopefully technology will keep moving gas milage along. It won't keep pace though so the overall cost of this sport as all sports will continue to rise. The real threat to our sport is the self-proclaimed enviormentalists trying to close down access. For a group of people that never get out to enjoy the wilderness they sure have alot to say about it.

True that, what a$$ hats! see the prob is sledding is to expensive for many new younger people to join in witch spells doom. the day that a 4 stroke mountain sled is as lite as the 2 smoker i will buy one, but thats awhile out. i think these so called activists need to be set in a endless field of pow and let lose, nothing like shredding some pow to make you feel better about the pollution your putting in the air. People are hurting mother nature but its impossible to be zero impact so might as well have your fun before the whole sh!t house goes up in flames! my 0.2 pennys

I think that we will see turbo charged/super charged propane rotary sleds in the furture. I think manufacters will go to rotary engines because of the easy power and propane because its cheap. Running 87 in a turbo charged/super charged propane injected rotary engine cranking out 300 hp dosen't sound so bad:D. It will also make the greenies happy (if thats possible)
