FUEL MILEAGE

So here's the story. A group of my friends and i went on a trip. I was pulling an oversized enclosed four place with my 07 duramax and my buddy pulling an open two place with his 08 duramax. My 07 has a cheap tuner and his 08 has an edge with juice. Upon arrival to the destination I asked him what he was getting for mileage and he said about 20. My first thaught was bull s*** I was only getting between 8 and 9. So i called him on it saying anyone who claims 20 mpg pulling with a diesell is a liar. He didn't like that and gave me some crap back. When we got home everyone decided to split fuel so i added it all up and compared.. I only had $ 30 more in fuel than him and he was claiming twice the mileage. I just smiled and didn't say anything. So what are you guys getting for mileage and what did you do to get that. Im thinking about removing my dpf has anyone done this

I've got an 07 Dodge with the 6.7 Cummins.

EGR & DPF both gone, with an XRT tuner installed. Empty I can get 20 no problem, but with the 6 place enclosed..... 10-12 is average but this last weekend I was running about 14 with a 20-25mph tailwind. Prior to the deletes and tuner, I couldn't get 14 empty!!! I do drive sensible though when pulling, typically 65-68.

50K miles a year and that extra 5-7 mpg pays for itself in no time. Plus, I haven't been to the dealer once since, prior to.... almost every other week for DPF and turbo issues.

get rid of that exhaust. it will be like a complete different pickup. just get a 4" turbo back exhaust and either find a tuner or have someone put an efilive tune on it. You will love it! Trust Me. as for mileage. I have done a couple dpf deletes on lmms for a friend of mine in helena. Last week he towed three sleds in an enclosed and got less than seven stock. he does tow hard. He also tows gooseneck trailers with spray insulation equipment and generators, they weigh ove 18000 lbs. he claims he can get 11 towin that with a dpf delete, efilive 50 horse tune stacked with juice/attitude.

I've been thinking about doing a dpf delete on my 07 lmm. Can I just get a dpf delete kit, or do I need a tuner to go with it. I dont really want to drop the dough on a tuner if I dont have to. How much $ for a delete kit?

06 duramax LBZ, 6"lift, 325-65 Nitto terra grapplers w/silverlake sled deck. Just got 10.5 mpg going from Pullman to Mccall with some headwinds. Motor and Tranny are all stock.
And I call B.S. on 20 MPG pulling anything

I'll agree that getting 20MPG while towing is B.S.
Many tuners will throw off the DIC reading MPG. Some guys will brag about what they get and have never hand calculated it!

If you ditch the DPF you will definitely need a programer to take care of the regen programing on the truck.

Two websites where I have learned a ton about my Duramax:
duramaxforum.com
dieselplace.com
The guys are very helpful on both sites and you'll find many diesel performance vendors that will help you out.

Hope it helps.

On my trip to Cooke after Christmas my 07.5 Chevy LMM got 7.3 to 7.9 hand calculated headed out pulling a 4 place enclosed with the cruise set at 82.

The road home was adventure with sub-zero temps and the last 280 miles below 55 mph and the computer showing 11.8 mpg for that section.

The whole trip I averaged 8.1 mpg.

Fuel mileage is what you make it. The slower you drive the better your milage will be.

I can do a tune and 4" turbo back exhaust for 800 bucks. includes muffler and tip, and a wide variety of tunes to choose, and i can program an exhaust brake in. Or look on the web and order a programmer, doesnt matter much on the brand, they are all pretty good now.

Just put an H & S Mini Max with 4" exhuast on my 09 DMax before we went to the Snowies last week. Have a 4 place Alumna with the Snow Caps cover, so less wind resistance than a taller inclosed trailer. We hand calculated every tank as the DIC always reads high on mpg. Avg 12.5 mpg on 1600 miles with a range of 11-14.2 mpg depending on wind direction and uphill/downhill. We run 5mph over on speed limit so 75 in IA and 80 in NE/WY. Have not calculated avg driving around home yet but DIC showing 20. Before exhuast change we would get 8-10 pulling and 16 with daily driving.

If i were a little closer you would be removing my dpf. I think thats the path im gonna take.. I'm on my way to 20 mpg:clap2: ok maybe 15:face-icon-small-hap

The best I have ever gotten with my 04 Lb7 is like 18 driving like an 80 year old man. I average 15Mpg in the summer with about 500+Hp. Towing is around 10.

I have an 03 Sick Liter with a 4" lift, 35" tires, cold air intake (K&N), juice/attitude on it. 18mpg empty on the highway (60-65 or so MPH) and 12-14 towing a 26' enclosed trailer (60MPH) , around town driving 12-14mpg is the best I can do. Exhaust and EGR delete is in my near future.

Back in 04 when I have my Duramax the best I ever got pulling my enclosed was 13. I had my Jeep in the trailer and was averaging 65 mph. I usually could get 10-11 pulling it with that truck. That same truck averaged 15-16 mpg and got 17 on it's best tank. All hand calculated.

Get ahold of Great Plains Customs in Sioux falls He can set you up with the dpf delete and exhaust. If you want to go with EFILive tuning talk with Iceman56 on here. He has programmed a few dmaxes. he is also in this area.

I guess I've been out of the loop for too long? What is DPF?

It is a Diesel Particualte Filter, which catches excess soot before it goes out the exhaust tip. Once the DPF is "full" it has to go throught a re-generation process and burn it out. During this process you cant drive more than 40MPH for about 10 mins. It is all done by the trucks computer. I personally think it just robs fuel mileage. What is the difference if the truck has clean air coming out of the exhaust tip at 11mpg, or the truck gets 20mpg without any of that extra B.S. I know a person that has the delete kit on his 08 F-350 with a Edge Chip and gets almost 20Mpg. I would get it out if it was in my truck!

superfly333, the 40mph for 10 mins is not true. depending on driving styl/load, most dpf equipped pickups will go into regen once or twice a tank. Its actually very hard to tell when you are in a regen, on my dodge the only way i could tell was a slightly different exhaust note at idle, and the gauge would be 200-300 degrees higher on egts, and it would tell me regen was on. regens usually last 20-40 mins, and yes they absolutely kill your mileage. the dpf is cleaned by the injection of diesel into the exhaust stroke, thus sending hot burning fuel through your nice expensive turbo that doesnt like heat, and into your exhaust. I hate the EPA

OK then - yes - I have heard of them. But when I saw some posts dating their trucks back to '06 I thought that this must be something else. I didn't think it was that old? I guess I only know of it on the Cummins. They haven't had it THAT long have they? Or has time just been flying by?

Anyone heard of getting ticketed for non-compliance yet?

Is the delete kit legal? You know they outlawed "test pipes" in '86 I think? (for those old enough to know what those were...) This wouldn't be any different eh?

.

Haha never heard of a "test pipe" Ox! It is illegal to run on highway without a dpf. And now its not state by state because its a federal mandate. I personally dont know of anyone who has gotten ticketed for no dpf, and i really dont think it happens much. the epa isnt gonna go after a single guy towing his sled trailer without a dpf, they chase the factories and fleets that put out a lot more emissions. It is legal to take it off in Canada, and if i was a Canadian i would be pissed that i have to spend 1k to take U.S govt sh*t off.
