Ford powerstroke?????? wannabe newbe

I am thinking about getting a diesel again ( I have had a 94 7.3ps and a 95 ps) but I don't know much about the 6.4L. Do they have as many issues as the 6.0l which is out of the question for sure. I have heard way to many horror stories about the 6.0's. Do the 6.4's have the urea injection or what ever and what does it cost to refill and how often, and can it be deleted? If it can be deleted does it shorten the life of the engine and what does it cost to delete and what about warrenty? Do the 6.4's have as many injector issues as the 6.0's? And last what are some of the issues that the 6.4's do have? I would love to find a 03 with a 7.3 with low low miles but I don't think thats gonna happen so the 6.4 is next on my list. I don't wanna hear about how much better a duramax or cummins is so don't bother. ( no offense intended to anyone) I just am trying to figure out what its gonna cost me to drive a diesel again with the long term repair and maint. bills. Thanks for your help in advance.

the 6.0 was a bad motor plain and simple. the 6.4 is a great motor with minimal problems as the all have issues no matter what brand my company has five 6.4. they love their fuel if you leave the dpf on. they are just plain awesome if you put a spartan in them all of our trucks have them in they add horsepower and tune the tranny too unlike other chip that just add horsepower which is bad for the truck. they don't use the urea injection that is the 2011 6.7. if you have to choose between the 7.3 or a 6.4 go with the 6.4 we have had 8 of them and they are WORKING for us. no major problems just a rad when they first came out and one truck we did the fuel system but thats from BAD FUEL.

Get a 6.4L you will be glad you did. Just don't get a job1 08 and you will be good to go. The first few 08's (job 1) had a few minor issues (radiators, etc.), but should have been worked out by now. I have a job2 08 and it's been awesome. Be ready to remove the dpf and spartan tune it, if you want a real screamer, as they are very thirsty in stock form. Depending on how the new 6.7 PSDs hold up, i may be looking for a low mileage 2010 6.4L again, when my 08 get's tired. They are nothing like the 6.ohno's!!

When did they go to the job 2??? What does it cost to delete the dpf and whats a spartan tuner cost?

I am trying to help a buddy sell his 2001 7.3.
If you want more info...send me a PM.

That's a good question, i don't know exactly when the cutoff date was for job1-job2 trucks. I know that all job 2 & 3 super duty's had the larger front air dam (3-4") on the bottom of the bumper, and job1's had a smaller (maybe 1-1.5") air dam. That's how i tell the difference, if you happen to find a truck that still has the window sticker in the glove box it says right on it.

It will cost you $1,300-1,600 depending on if you do a full exhaust to, or just the delete pipes. Plus labor, unless you install it. I would not personaly buy one if you are not planning on doing this, as they are kind of dogs when they are plugged up with the emissions equipment. VERY thirsty too!

My last new Ford was an 02' 7.3l. I owned Dodges and Chevs through the 6.0 era......sure glad to be back!
I have been completely impressed how these 6.4's run. Tuners alone are reaching 600 rwhp....pretty impressive!

Somebody help me....what is the dpf delete?

The DPF is the diesel particulate filter that catches all that nasty black suet that used to blow out the pipe of the nasty diesels!! The ford dumps raw fuel into the DPF then burns it out like a self cleaning engine that process is called regen. My 08 would regen 4 f'ing times in one tank of fuel. So I "deleted" the DPF:). Now I can get double digits instead of single digit gas mileage!

I ran the Spartan but it was very hard on my truck! I switched to edge cts last month. Edge doesn't tune the tranny. My torque converter wass slipping with Spartan but does not slip with the edge

07.5 That's why you could get a classic chevy in 07 and the new one. Because every truck built after January 1st of 07 had to have DPF. That's why dodge also had a 5.9 in 07 (pre jan 1 trucks) then the 6.7 after that. And then ford had the 6.0 in 07 and the 08 fords came out in January of 07 with the 6.4.

tuner vs regeneration??

Has anyone noticed if the amount of times it regenerates per tank went down after you installed the tuner or if it stayed the same or went up?

I actually dumps the diesel into the cylinders, that, to me is what is not good. With the Ford, this started in 08. It completely robs power and efficiency. Mine will go into regen 1x per tank. Another thing I have finally noticed is that right after regen, the truck runs great! As miles are put on toward the magic 150-200 mile marker, the truck gradually runs less efficient and less smooth until another regen. Then for about 30 miles it does it thing and over and over and over. Delete the CAC/DPF and tune. It's soon for me.

If you tune it without deleting the DPF, you will probably regen more often and ultimately you will probably clog that DPF if still remains. It's a spendy item and if you want to keep it on, I don't know if a tuner is a very good idea. I think Banks makes a decent DPF "on" tuner. (6 gun). Most would probably tell ya to get rid of the DOC(catylitic converter) and DPF and tune.

Alright besides the dpf delete and the radiator in the early 08's were there any other common problems like injectors or turbo's or anything else????

Check these out.

A lot of info and knowledgeable people there.

I've got a job 2. I've had a radiator and CAC (charge air cooler/intercooler) replaced. The fuel system can be sensitive on some.

Trying to run a tuner on a 6.4L without removing the dpf is absolutely worthless. They are so choked up by the dpf, and a tuner alone will do nothing but plug your dpf. You will see very small hp gains, no mileage gains, and a plugged filter!! If you don't plan on removing the dpf leave it stock!!

6.4 stock not even worth looking at if you want my 2cents. Almost need a tanker truck to hook up to on the road trips.

6.4 with a Spartan and never look back. If I could have my perfect truck it would be the new 2011 with a 6.4 Spartan tunned.

I would not get a job 1 infact if you can look for a 2010 or at least a job 2 setup.

I love my 6.4 and I about pulled the trigger on a 6.7 Ford.

job 2 6.4Ls also have a different Transmission filter. I had an 08 Job 1, I did have the radiator replaced but it ran great with a spartan tuner on it. Had 60K miles on it when I sold it, and not a hiccup
