I read your story... and I sympathize with what happened but I'm not going to put a whole lot of stock in the safety ravings of a guy who was highmarking in the dark not wearing a beacon. Maybe you have learned, but talk about "asking for it"....

I read it too, I think he's learned. I thought it was interesting that he mentioned not having time to activate the thing even if he'd had one, Seems like it's usually the cornice you're in that triggers one. I've wondered if I would pull the ring or pinch the throttle if it was behind me. A lot of pilots have augered parachute equipped planes into the ground, ya if they'd pulled the handle they'd probably be alive but instinct was to try to gain control.

Wow, im not trying to win anyones sympathy with my story. And yes I was asking for it. I have learned my lesson and im trying to keep other people from being in accidents due to negligence. If you dont like what I write then dont read it. End of story.

There is obviously no way to know for sure if there was time. I keep that little handle firmly "in mind" while riding. I know right where to find it, and know what happens when I pull it. Definately better than not wearing it. I would wear a pack anyway, whats another 5lbs for safetys sake.

Looks like over 90% of ABS pack users are saying they stay safe anyway by the looks of the poll. That other 10%....well, you just can't fix stupid.

I didn't mean to lay into you, I just think you have the wrong impression of why most of us use these packs. There are feet of new snow here, and I have no sled, I'm a little upset.:beer;

Then I have been warding off a nasty skier group trying to horn in on some nice areas. I had one infer that I didn't know the avy danger in the area. A woman who professes to have dug out several freinds. Who's the safe one? That I don't know the terrain, yeah over 4000 miles in three years, NO groomed trails.

What spooked me most about the story though was how familiar you were with the slope. The lesson is to expect it from any slope I guess.
