For those who run winter wheels and tires

tires

On my 4th set of Revo's , Have great traction ! Down side, not cheap and wear out fast.

I think there worth every cent, but if you pull alot in the summer may want to change out to something harder.

Hangtime

Yeah, I was up fairview yesterday also and had a tough time getting up the canyon. The BFG's have got to go! they turn to slicks when they get a little some on them.

Cooper discoverer stt's work great for me. They are a little softer tread, so they don't last as long, but they work good in snow and ice.

My experience when comparing all season tires look for tires with the most sipes, it will have great deal more traction without having to go to really aggressive tread.

Good Luck

I run Bridgestone Blizzaks. You can slam on your brakes on a sheets of ice and the hook up great. We were on our way to Lolo Pass and the roads were coveres in 4" of slush, it was terrible. A small car spun from the other lane in front of us and off into the ditch. Thoes tires helped keep us and our trailer carring 3 sleds on the road. I don't think I will ever trust anything else....:D

I'm runnin michelin x-ice's on 17 inch bbs forged wheels
My car is a 2004 subaru wrx sti
photo of car without snow tire though :)
It has a center locking diff and is a weapon in the snow and Ice.
I also run the same tire on my 4x4 ford ranger

Anything with studs, if you can legally run them where you live.... They can be a little noisy but once you try them you will never go back. I even have studded tires on my sled trailer!

Nitto terra grapplers. Good traction, less expensive than bf goodrich, and my last set lasted 55k miles.

I run Toyo Hyperadial 235/85/16 with studs. The tires last longer than the studs do but by just running them in the winter I manage to get 3 years on them bebore the traction goes away. The only way to go on the icy roads IMO, Ken.

wich bfg's? I used the bfg allterains for a long time and really liked them in the winter. I had a set on my duramax last season and was really worried because I hadn't put new ones on for the winter and these only had 1/8" or less tread in the center. Decent tread on the outside 1" of tire, but pretty bald down the center. I hadn't put new ones on the first time we went for the year and thought I would be screwed. They actually did really well. I used them for the whole winter like that and put new tires on half way through the summer when the bfg all terrains were completly bald.
I got nitto terra graplers because they were a couple hundred dollars cheaper for the set then the bfg all terains. I havn't drove my truck up yet sledding (have gone up with other people so far), but have ben driving it around town so far and it has done good in light amounts of snow and ice. 3" of snow in town right now and dumping so I will see how they do driving around today.
I have heard that the bfg mudders do not do nearly as good in the snow as the allterains. I don't know from personal experiance since all I have ran for over 10 years is bfg all terains.

I use TOYOs from Les Schwab in the spring/summer because of good traction and life, and I run a (new to me) tire from Cooper/Les Schwab now in the winter. It is called Maxxis I think, has a wider open groove better in deep snow and mud (like a swamper but not as big) but still has ice traction with STUDS. So far it is the best combo I have run to date.

X's2 I have drove right by people spinning out on their stud's. Studded tire's do work good but not as good as the blizazak's I have found

What he said for sure. If it is legal where you live run a good siped AND studded tire!!! Nokian hakapellita, cooper, firestone are all some tires that have major siping. Most a huge diffence on ice. They are not as agressive as others in deep snow or mud. As a matter of fact, a good ice tire is not agressive at all and they are very smooth and quiet on the highway. But get in icy situations and they will stop on a dime and pull out a string of stuck trucks! We can run studs here I have the best of both worlds on my rigs. Super siped tires, with studs. I wont run with out them anymore. Makes your rig solid on the worst of roads. Can't remember the last time I had to put chains on.

Bridgestone Revos on my Jeep GC---55,000 miles and never a problem. For severe conditions, sipe them. Blizzaks with studs on my neighbors Dodge turbo--Amazing traction

To the origional poster, the best tire for winter traction is a dedicated winter tire. Blizzak, toyo Go2, Yokohama has an awesome winter for you lifted 16" tire crowd, buddy runs the 315's on his dodge and its unreal. General Grabber AT2's are a much better tire compared to the BFG AT for winter duty, and is also studable (with more siping). That being said, i run 17-18's on my Duty, and size options are null and void for anything bigger then a 285 for the most part. I couldnt pass up a set of 37" BFG MT's at the price i was givin, even tho they are a chity tire, so they are getting siped, and drilled/studded for winter use.

What are the best tires for winter traction. Mine were ok but yesterday dang near didnt make it up the canyon, time for new rubber.

cooper discover m&s and i run the studded--pulled 27 enclosed up --14a on a sheet of ice with no chains--i sell tires and have found nothing better snow or ice

Bingo the winner !!! Blizzaks, 4wd double posi,600lbs lead shot over the rear axel in a steel box + chains when needed (hardly ever) I run the e load range W965's they are a amazing tire, velcro on ice I can go damn near anywhere

I also run blizzaks on the rubicon, same deal. any mud tire will SUCK in the ice/snow

The BEST tire bar none is the Michelin x-ice nortic, looks like a sipped mud ta with 1/4 inch carbide spikes, not available in the us or canada.....and believe me I tried to get a set.
