for those who feel like they have to drill holes in sleds.....check this out

Belts exploding at 80 mph+ grenade, sending shrapnel everywhere.I've experienced it(bent foot well panels/clutch guards).Half a pound of clutch guard is not going to make too much of a difference on your sled, lay off the double cheese burgers if your that concerned;).

well instead of sittin on here go take 10 min. and rivet it back on. Or i guess you can do it after you replace the hood when it blows... protect yourself, its the dumb little things that will get a guy...

A few years back a friend and i were riding in what we thought were gonna be spring like conditions,so we ditched our hoods and headed up the valley into the backcountry, all of a sudden were into fresh powder, and we opt to go back for our hoods, seeming our sleds are gonna get sewered with snow now if we dont.

2 hrs later my friends clutch, primary, grenaded and sent shrapnel everywhere, looked like someone let a shotgun go inside his hood, pieces came thru the hood ,out the side underneath, every where. He said it was one of the loudest things he heard,it half deafened him for a few days.

point is i think if we didnt put our hoods back on, it could of been devastating, possibly fatal.

there's really no maintenance that could have prevented this thing from letting loose...

Lucky on you guys thats scary to think about. The worst thing that has happened to me is I lost a section of the belt going 10mph.

I hardly ever ride my snomocat with a hood or a belt gaurd. How are you silly peoples seeing if your clutches are shifting?

give it a few more years and you will be able to FEEL the clutches shift........grasshopper.

Or, you can mark your sheeves with a black felt pen. I never leave home without a sharpie. Works great if you have a buddy pass out too. You can give'm little cat whiskers or maybe a foo man choo mustache. I am also a fan of using it to write a note to the guy in the mall parking lot that dares to box me in. I've found they write best on Honda paint. A must have tool in the backpack IMO.

On the 01 Summit 600 I used to have, I was cruising along the trail, probably running about 6000 rpm and I had a weight in the primary that came apart, it went straight up through the belt guard, hit the hood and fell back into the belly pan. The belt guard must have slowed it down enough so that it didn't go through the hood. If the belt guard wasn't there it would still be in orbit. And is sounded like the entire sled exploded, very loud and violent.

I am relieved to know that most people smelled fish here. If your speed is increasing, you can bet your clutches are shifting. I said not a thing about clutch eefishensee. I have witnessed well maintained primary clutches blow completely though RMSHA approved clutch covers. The belt has power but those chunks of aluminum are what will kill you.

Belt's

I've had 2 belts blow up on me, 1st one exactly like the first pics. Maintenance is one thing but riding style is another. My belts let go due to them shifting out too far and tightening them to the point of breaking them. It actually ripped the aluminum from the center of the secondary, think of it tapped out in the powder or across a flat fully shifted out on both clutches and still wanting to shift more. BOOM!

I saw a sled that had the primary come right apart. It blew through the belly pan and hit the trailing arm hard enough to bend it down about 3 inches. Imagine what could have happened if that chunk had went up instead of down!!

So why don't you gear up?

I fragged a brand new belt doing about 80 mph. Have no idea why it blew. To much heat or something.

Anyways there were no dents or anything in my guard.
