Flat screen vs. projector

We are thinking of upgrading our tv. We don't have the most room so we were thinking of going with a flat screen and mounting it on the wall or getting a projector. How is the quality of picture with a projector? Which will give you the most for your money.

Projector TV? I would go away from that, they in a way are being fazed out I thought. Seems places don't have as many any more. If you are talking one from the ceiling, well you need a very flat wall, preferably painted a certain color and then you would have that thing hanging down all the time. Plus you would need to cover up the wires and stuff wouldn't you?

I have a projection HDTV 42" that's about 18" deep. It's great but I would opt for a flat LCD next time. I have one of the LCD's in my bedroom and I prefer that TV much better then the one in my living room. Both are HDTV with a HD source.

I think you get the biggest screen and most bang for your buck with the Plasma's. Their reputation seems to be a bit sketchy in terms of reliability? The LCD's from what I have read have the best picture and longevity but are a bit pricer when compared to the equal size plasma. I don't know much about the DLP stuff that has come out?

If anyone is looking for a perfect condition 42" Toshiba projection HDTV for cheap let me know. I would part with it for $500.00. I would like to get the LCD for my living room and free up a smidge of space.

I would never recomend a projector. If your still thinking about one pick one out. THEN price out a replacement bulb. after 1500 hrs of use time I need a new one.. the bulb I need is over $400. and it needs to be really dark to see the screen (we have a bunch of windows so you cant use it when its sunny even with the shades shut). Just what I think...

don't agree

I disagree with the previous statements, but that is just my opinion. If you are happy with the size of regular tv's go that way. I and my brothers in law all have Panasonic ax-100U projectors and screens (not a wall). They are the only way to go in my opinion, great picture, light sensor,HD. Very user friendly and add surround and it's like a movie theatre. just my .03

I live in a house and we have both a projector, and flat screens and IMO the projectors work really well for more of a theater application, but for an every day watch, I would go with the flat screens. The projectors net the room to be much darker to get a good pic. Get a wall mount for the lcd and just fish the wires up the wall. Really simple to do and saves a lot of space.

Duh, RJ, there's less oxygen up there....their fuel mixture richens way up.

Anyhoo...$ for $, plasmas beat the LCD when you try to find equal picture quality.

We just did the shopping.

An LCD with 1080p and a 120hz processor will cost you at least $500 more (on just low end TVs) than a plasma.

We ended up with a 42" panasonic plasma from Costco for a $1099.
LCDs were not less than $1800 for the same pic quality.

1080p

Not sure about you guys, but after you have watched Casino Royale on BlueRay on a 110" 1080P projector there is nothing else that even compares.

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L

They may not work as well for normal viewing, but get a PS3, and a couple BlueRay discs, and you will be up for weeks till 1-2:00AM watching movies, and playing MX vs ATV untamed......................

Did I say the picture, and experience is way better than the best movie theaters out there?????

I've got a buddy with this set-up and.........you're right....except Wii games are even better!

IMHO, LCD is the way to go..... Projectors are a good solution, depending on the environment.... If it is going to be in a dark room, you would probably be very happy with a projector.. If you it is going in a well lit room, lots of light (sun or artificial), you will be very displeased..... A picture from a projector absorbs light, while an LCD will not.... An LCD will display a fenominal picture across all lighting conditions.

My old roommate had a DLP HD projector and it looked sweet. WE had it in the basement so light was not an issue. That is the biggest problem with projectors is that you need a dark(er) room. If you have the darker room then go for it. Quality screen made a big difference.

I saw Casino Royale on BluRay and 50+" Plasma. I wasn't sure I was watching the same movie as I did in the theater. PHENOMINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are a lot of you guys using the ps3 for your blu-ray player?

I am and I've been nothing short of impressed. From what I've read, Sony is taking a $100 per unit hit to subsidize the Blu-Ray portion to get it into more homes. I hardly use mine for gaming. They also do a kick-butt job of upconverting SD-DVDs.

Thanks for the info, man, almost need to drop 2k to get a good setup. Though it will be worth it for star wars unleashed! Yes I am a geek!

If you ever get to South Dakota look me up and i will change your mind on projectors. Good luck.

If I ever get to south dakota you are gonna point me in the direction of some ringnecks. In-laws live in Kansas, I lived there for 5 years during school and the pheasant hunting was excellent. I here SD is even better.

I think we are going to go with a LCD. Thanks for all of the info
