First Ride Observations: 2008 RevXP Summit X 154

Purchased last week (Steel Dreams) and had a chance to log 120 miles this weekend. First, the location and conditions: Fish Lake/Lake Wenatchee. FEET of new powder. Did a lot of boondocking in 4-5 feet of lightly tracked to untracked powder. Conditions were as good as I have seen in years.

About me: Experienced rider (30+ years...more trail than mountain), been an Artic Cat man my whole life. I don't get caught up in brand wars as much as othes here on the board - I just love snowmobiling. I think the M sleds are very good, and I still have 3 Arctic Cats (2 mountain). GREAT sleds. For me, just being out there on any sled is a lot of fun.

Now, the new Ski-Doo. I read EVERY post on this board about all of the problems, and was a bit concerned. Any time I drop 12k+ on a sled, I want a quality product. Well, let me tell you. This is the FINEST sled I have had the pleasure of riding. And, I have rode MANY :)

1) Sled was set up perfectly by Ron. I didn't encounter any of the known issues. I think I am benefitting by a lot of knowledge gained over the early part of the year. Sled was pretty much perfect. Geared with 19 tooth, 166 belt, handwarmer fix. Belt was perfect after two days of hard riding.

2) Power: Most impressive mid-range I have ever seen. This motor flat pulls HARD. Skis coming off the ground at takeoff. 20 - 60 feels like a few seconds. Flat scary :) No - I didn't race anyone, and I am not saying this is faster than an M1000. It might be, it might not. I'll let you know down the road. It is the fastest sled I have ridden by seat of the pants feel. Also, it had excellent stability on the trails, with very little "darting". I really like the skis.

3) Climbing and floating: Stayed off the steep hills due to Avy danger, and I am brand new to the sled. Did I get stuck? Yep. Many times. But in every ocurrence it was my fault and not the sleds. It floated beautifully in the deep ... and I am about 235 pounds. Popped right up on the powder - flat amazing. Intuitive chassis ... and easy to throw around in the powder. I haven't had this much fun on a sled in a long time!

4) Room for improvement? Sure. I did notice a bit (not much) of vibration in the handlebar and footwell. More than my Arctic Cats. Not enough to *****, but I do wish it wasn't there. Also, revving a bit high (8350RPM) so I need to adjust my clickers down one notch. No biggie, will take me 15 minutes. Also, seemed to go through gas, but I was really getting on it. Lastly, at 6'1", I cant see the gauges unless I stand up ... handlebars are in the way. That is a bummer, as the gauge package is fantastic.

Summation: For me, I made the right choice. I was drawn in by the light weight, and it delivers on that in spades. Power is fantastic ... and this sled floats in the deep unlike any sled I have ever ridden. This sled makes me a better rider, for sure. I was in places I would not go with other sleds. Just one guy's opinion ... but if you are on the fence, go for it. This sled is fantastic.

Yep I love mine also. Funnest stock sled I have ever ridden. I was amazed how it builds speed when climbing. For a stocker it pulls hard. I changed to the new belt after I blew my 166 and lost about 200 R's on the top. This is due to the 377 loading the motor harder. I had black marks on the primary from the 166 slipping but now with the 377 there is no sign of belt slippage.

Nice report. Glad you like it. I love my 154X too! Don't be afraid of 8350 rpm. The new R motor is just fine up there. It stay makes good power all the way to the rev limiter(around 8450-8500rpm). Ride it and enjoy!

great to hear. i just bought one last week from rexburg motorsports in id. picking it up in a couple weeks. hope it's good to go! can't wait!

Yep ... good point. To me, a good dealer is worth their weight in gold. I think it is the key to whether or not these sleds work out of the box. Sorry to all the dudes that were handed a sled not set up correctly. Not their fault, and the sled is the one that gets the bad reputation. In reality, the DEALER should be the one that takes the heat.

Just my opinion.

Glad you didn't wait!!!

F.L.F. As a XP owner (x2) it is hard to explain how the sleds ride untill you take one out for alot of miles. The rider foward postion takes time to get used to, but when you do it's such an easy sled to ride.Just wait untill it breaks in. Great sleding on Saturday and yes it's hard to dig out in that deep of powder! just wish this cold wasn't kicking my a**. Should be another great weekend coming up as more snow is coming!!!!!!

Be fair to the dealers, they get this new sled dumped on them and lots of them. They are asked to set it up without a manual and with little to no help from BRP!

Great review.

There are still alot of things that need done if you havent already, (or if your delaer hasnt).

Some important ones are;
  • Cut your secondary Cog
  • Tighten you "Y" pipe bolts
  • Ensure your belt deflection is correct
  • With the 19 gear, you should have the stock 12mm PLUS a 8mm pin at your elevation
  • Cover/Vent the top hole above the muffler
  • Cover/vent the nose piece that sfull of holes (Stoopid BRP!)
  • Have your dealer doo the Driveshaft weld (Its warrantied)
  • An airbox mod (there are several)
  • Put your limiter strap in the last bolt hole
Good Luck! They are a great sled!

Teth-Air- I am not "dissing" on dealer's in general. I get it. But, there are clearly two camps: Dealers that care, and dealer's that don't. I was lucky enough to find a great one. But I have buddies with the same sled that were not so lucky, and rather than deal with the issue, they were blown off. The fact that there is a problem is not a big deal to me, but I want to feel like I am teamed with someone that is on my side. Greg and Ron at Steel Dreams are definitely examples of the "good guys".

Slim ... great list, and thank you. I will check with Ron on the other issues, though I suspect the are already handled. Worth verifying!

Slim,
You are suggesting to lengthen the limiter strap to its longest position, correct?

Thanks,

One or two more things...

FLF, bump your springs up to 4 or 5 and turn the shock up on the rear suspension too. I'm running about 20 pounds lighter than you and my suspension still sags more than I would like.
Swing your handle bar riser back slightly too, it will sit you back a little bit farther on the sled when standing and the sled will react to your input a little bit quicker and with less effort, you may be able to see the guages a little better too.

As a fellow XP Owner, I must agree. This is the most fun I have ever had on a sled. I am 6-2 and 265, but that doesn't hinder this thing. I have owned it four weeks and have put about 190 miles on it. No belt issues whatsoever - Xtreme performance her in CO have the clutch tuning perfected. It does not have the "cramped" position like the REV and it is even more responsive. It is a perfect fit for us "big-boned" guys :)

My only complaint is that there is no place to mount a muff-pot!! Oh well - cold burritos will have to do.
