Polaris 2009 Dragon 800 report -
I purchased a holdover 09 D8 brand spanking new in September of 09 and took delivery in early October after
the dealer installed the 2010 update. 0 miles and 0 hrs on the motor. This sled came with electric start, ice
scratchers and the bogie wheel set. The Mods I made before ever riding it were Better Boards, an under seat bag,
taped up the headlight adjuster and added an aux gas can mounted on the rear.
First ride early November with a full tank mixed at approx 50:1 (VES blue) and injector filled with the new
Polaris gold oil. The sled ran great. Smoked like all hell but started right away no stumbles and no issues.
I did the heat soak method for warm-up before every ride. As of 11/26 I have 50mi on it with just trail rides
and an occasional full throttle burst under a slight uphill load. Coming off a 2000 700 gen II that runs real
strong I can say the Dragon pulls noticeably stronger. Temps I've seen are mostly 124 to 133 in brisk trail riding
but riding in wet heavy snow with one of my buddies at speeds of less than 10mph I have seen it get to 170. Yes I
stopped and let it cool before continuing on (mostly I let my buddy get far enough ahead to where I could ride
with some speed thereby keep the temps down). Call me crazy but for trail riding the suspension works real well
maybe that’s because I'm coming off a genii. I’ve also noticed the power band with proper throttle control is almost
electric up to about 7k rpm making the sled really smooth for the conditions I've ridden in so far. Stab the
throttle hard and you'll get nothing but track spin as you search for traction. Fuel mileage is a bit scary as
I've burned a bit over a half tank for the 50 or so MI I've put on so far. Plugs are mostly black with a hint
of brown but haven’t fouled and the motor runs great. I'll keep updating the report as the season progresses.
