Second the Fire N Ice thumbs up...
I've tried all of the airboxes out there on the 900's.... SLP, VanAmburg, TCP, Fabcraft, stock, Fire N Ice and Timbersled.
Hands down the Fire N Ice..
Rideh2o.... your experience is exactly opposite of my experience with FNI...Paul Hurley, the owner is one of the most customer oriented guys that I know of... He has always gone the extra mile for me and given great customer support.
It sucks that your box(s) failed... got some Pix???
IMO, the SLP is the worst design (an evolved version of the TCP).. it is hard on the throttle body boots with the normal flexing of the front nosepan that it is screwed to. It draws air from under the hood when the front grille is plugged (which is all the time in deep powder). If you put a hole in the plastic grille on the nose pan, or bump a tree, you will be sending snow and debris into the engine thru the airbox.. The timbersled draws hot air from under the hood.
The best place to draw air is from up high in the console where it is nice and coola and wont get plugged.
A gutted stock air box is a very good option IF you go with better console intakes and seal the airbox plenum in the hood (arond the headlight and gauge mount). You would need to run a good side panel vent, stirrup vent and take the cubby-storage-box out on the PTO side for better cooling of the clutches.
The only worry with the stock airbox is that if you blow a belt, it will punch thru the bottom of the airbox and send debris into the motor... you can keep this from happening by lining the bottom of the airbox (on the outside) with some .080 aluminum.
Good luck.
