F#&K....Dead Cylinder :(

Exactly what happened. Seriously 1-2 miles from the truck and it just totally died out of no where, almost like a limp mode or something. Would start afterward, but it was obvious that something was not right. Towed it back to be safe and not cause further damage.

I will bet that's what happened. and another thing to think about. a completely full tank of oil will make this problem more likely, a half empty tank will have more air inside the tank making it take much longer to create a vaccume effect on the tank and in most cases get you to a riding area where you can play enough to get the ball in the cap to vent the tank where a full tank of oil will stop flowing much faster.
On a side note, (in my opinion) the reason rkt pistons seem to have this happen more than stock Pistons .
#1 they are much tighter tolerances than oem
#2 they have the skirt oiling holes drilled in them
my theory why they will fail before the oem piston is this, 1 they fit much tighter in the cylinder so when oil is taken out they make more contact because they fit better. 2 the oiling holes now introduce fuel only and actually wash away the oil from them spots on the piston which is why that's the first place they make contact and grab.

I have two different Pistons from two different manufactures from two different engines that both have oiling holes and both have the exact same look, and markings where they made contact. It's not the Pistons fault it failed when lubrication is lost every piston will eventually fail
 
So from here, tear her down and send her out to be re-nickel plated/honed, then new pistons and rings.......

You may get lucky. the last two times on mine all it did was leave some aluminum on my cylinder. I cleaned it off polished and honed it looked good as new. But it don't always end up that way
 
Funny I learned my lesson about rk tek products back in 05 when i rode a skidoo.
You'd think the word would spread.
I have never met anyone who has had anything but a bad rktek experience.

Nothing else to do but tear it apart and determine the cause.
Like mentioned above.

Injectors
Oil supply
Air leak
Cold seize
Improper ring end gap or piston to cylinder wall clearance.
Foreign object ingestion.

All worth checking for.


stuck their pistons in my 13 after 2000 miles on the stockers. ran them 1200 miles last year with no problems and they still look good. BRP oil cap and oiler turned up. i know its only one season on them. so so far good experience with rk tek

Drill small hole in cap and cap will vent all the time only problem is it will leak a little when upside down
Tinker, this is the first time in over 2 months of searching and following threads that I've seen a picture of where the hole should be drilled. Have you tested or compared the oil flow before and after drilling?

I have not compared. but I do no it's using more than before, I'm paying attention now. I turned my pump up a bunch and now gonna adjust it so it's running somewhere around 40/1 ratio. After you drill your cap, blow threw the hole in the top of your cap and make sure air flows threw your new hole and your good. Also so everyone knows when you drill it you need to drill threw 2 steps in the cap the first one your bit will just barely drop into the cap the second layer it will go into the center of the cap and that's all you need to do, and use a pretty small bit than it less likely to spill than a big hole
 
sorry been riding for 3 days i had the whole kit head and his pistons my dealer installed them the day mine went down it was at the end of the day oil tank was half empty was not oil starved i was also adding about 8 ounces of oil to each tank
 
I put on a BRP oil caps on our two Pro 800s last season and noticed the oil consumption has nearly doubled each ride.

IMHO its cheap insurance.
Did the same thing this season. Installed a Ski Doo vented cap on my 2012 Polaris 800 with 1700 miles and also found that I was consuming more oil but I also adjusted the oiler for more oil.
 
Wonder what people's thoughts were on the following....

Wondering if I should send the cylinders to be redone at a machine shop and get some new OEM pistons/rings and put her back together.

OR

Pick up one of these used engines off ebay for $1,999.00 and sell the old one.

Only reason the second option is appealing is because Id hate to put all the time/work/and money into fixing this engine only to have it happen again......
 
you can probably just have the cylinder cleaned up and drop in a new piston, a for the other engine you know the one you have , who knows what kind of trouble you will have with the other one .
 
Very True.

However I'd rather just do both cylinders at the same time. So what are the options for machine shops that people recommend having this done? Any on the west coast?
