Explain HID headlights to me.

So I've been reading about HID lights for a long time and how great they are (less power drawn, less heat, obviously brighter etc etc). Now I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500, and I want to get a different set of lenses built for HID lights and with black background for looks. I have no idea what to get, or what not to get. Is it a simple plug and play type deal or is there a bit of wiring involved? Not that I'm afraid of doing some wiring. I found these but they don't ship to Canada http://www.k2motor.com/4lhpram02jmks.html

Is that what I'm looking for? Any help is appreciated guys!

Thanks!

I'd be leary that the light might not be really useful for seeing deer in the ditches. Says it has a more "focused" light, tells me that the throws out less light overall.

I'd want to read some real world reviews, this looks more show than go.

I run HID on my tractor and my Bimmer ....good sh1t period ...at least 4 times as bright

click the link H2 then give your opinion, this isn't just throwing HID bulbs in the OEM refractors.

hey snapper head I have $1500 dollar complete drop in replacement HIDs in my Kenworth truck ....they have ballasts and everything mounted on the frame ..true HID .....you know white light

oh and my Bimmer just comes with em

I cant help you much here, but my gf bought a set of headlights from those same guys for her 04 grand am. They are the same lights just obviously for a car though. Anyway, we tried to put them on but they were wrong ones. In the process of returning them. Well the point im trying to make is they seemed like pretty good lights. Decent quality etc. And they looked bright in the garage when they were turned on. I have no knowledge of HID lights but I know you will pay alot for them. Beware of cheap imitators. This probably doesnt help you much does it? :beer;

HID uses a ballast to iginite halide salts and various gases in a tube to create the light. The wattage on most conversions are 35 watts. They run cooler than an incandescant bulb. The biggest single issue in the high price of HID is the patent rights and payments to Sylvania because they own the technology. Dodge trucks are usually pretty bad for headlights since they use a smaller refelctor behind the bulb and a little more scatter on the lense. HID helps but they are pricy. Evenually, the prices will come down. It's like plasma tvs 5 years ago as opposed to today. More units built and sold, a little competiton and the prices will move. Early conversions used to cost $2500.00.

I'm thinking about getting a ballast and bulb type of setup for my chevy. I'm not sure about the dodges, but some guys who bought a kit such as ( search dds tuning in google ) have been really happy, though it seems their cust. service may not be perfect. Anyways, the guys who had projection style aftermarket lights that added HID afterwards were having poor results.

I guess my point is I think there are decent kits for like $60 that give you ballast and bulbs, if you're after low price.

if your going to get hids i would suggest getting the newer digital style. They have a smaller ballast and take less time to charge up. you can get them in a 55watt too. But pretty soon you can get a led headlight its a whole new lense with a bunch of leds in them kinda like the new audis.

I'm running HID in my suzuki sammy (round h4 conversion) I love them. I'm putting a set in my sled next. I can get them if anyone wants a set. single, double, high/low,single beam, any color temp,35 watts,50 watts, you name it? double high/low H4 is around $200 in a 35 watt

i have a 2004 2500 its a gas tho. but i have hid on it and love them 100 times better than stock. dont just do the lights do the hole deal if you do to them.
