Evols on a Pro

^ I wouldn't say that they have no place in the performance world. They do perform very well.... especially when you consider weight to performance ratio; however, with that being said, I do agree with you. Can't beat a quality coil shock. I've messed with lots of air vs coil in the mountain biking world. I still slightly prefer the ride of coil... although I'm currently running a Boxxer World Cup fork on my DH rig. (Which is an air fork) Love it for the weight though!

I was running the Evol Xs on my Summit... they may have been part of the reason I broke literally every single piece of the chassis at one point or another. Lmao! I had them set up real well and could just pound the moguls. Poor XP just couldn't take it anymore.

(And since I never did answer the OPs question - I would personally have no problem buying Evols again. I really liked them on my last sled and they did perform very well. The Xs had a LOT of adjustments though... I was playing around for weeks dialing them in. The Rs would be a little easier to setup, so that is always good.)

I've had the experience of comparing two nearly identical Pro's with Evol R's and Exit X1's. I really think the Fox shocks work for most people. Probably easier to set up as you do most of the work with a pump. But when pushed hard I think the X1's shine. Triple rate springs offer some awesome fine tuning. Yeah, it has to be done by Zbroz (unless you have several springs to experiment with). I have the X1's on the back as well and it's amazing how they do. A little more weight but worth it in my book. The front X1's are about 1 lb each more.

I know this is about Evol R's but I thought I would share anyway.

through this debate, I am still finding myself glad that I went with the Raptor's over floats and Zbroz. I was told that the Raptors came in at 2 lbs less than Zbroz too...I will have them monday and will be in the snow ASAP (probably Friday). As far as comparing them, I have only ridden on Float2's, WE floats, and stock PRO WE's. But I had a buddy with EVOL X's that hated them, but he also doesn't take the time to set things up.

You guys are starting to change my mind and leaning towards the raptors. I can get all 4 Evol r for 1300. What's the price for 4 raptors?

My thoughts are that if you are buying shocks based on weight then you don't need the abilities of the X1's. They are a little heavier but they have a larger heavier duty shaft (for bending resistance) and aren't the Raptor's double rate springs? I'm not knocking the Raptors, I have not been on them. My brother has them so I'll try them sometime. But I will agree that the coilover shocks are much better.

I would be interested in a weight comparison between the different shocks out there, performance vs weight vs cost.

Model Cost Weight
Float 2 $695 ?
Float Evol R $995 ?
Float Evol X $1495 ?

Exit Xo $850 ?
Exit X1 $1050 ?

Raptor $1050 ?

I have Evol Xs on my Freeride. Heard a lot of complaints about setting these shocks up was a little wary. I bought mine from Tom so they are close out of the box. I think people need to buy these shocks from a dealer who sends them with a baseline setup for THEIR sled. Tom for the Doo and Carls for the Pros for example. Then know that tuning them in for personal preference is going to be minor. 5-7 pounds in the mains is an obvious difference. 3-4 clicks either way is an obvious difference. No one should be much different from their recommended setup. You aren't going to find some odd combination that works better IMO. I can make my sled nearly unrideable really quick just with pressure and clicks. Poorly setup expensive shocks are worse than stock shocks. If you get confused go right to your baseline. It doesn't hurt to go a little past where you think you should be, sometimes it helps to go twice as far in clicks or pressure but know that the sweet spot is backwards, not farther out. Also, if you ride a Doo and are having trouble, call Tom. Super helpful and knowledgeable guy.

I was told they are a triple rate spring, not done with separate springs like the X1's, but with I believe the thickness/wind on the spring as it is a one piece spring. The shaft on the shock is thicker than stock too, 5/8" I believe, and comes with the Ti/Ni coating on it. I have been told the adjustability is unbelievable on them too. I'll find out this coming weekend, UPS says they get delivered tomorrow.

A bit spendy at 525 per shock, so about 2k for all 4, but when getting into shocks I knew it wouldn't be cheap!

^^^You are right, they are triple rate, I did some research and found the same thing. I have heard their adjustment is great.

all technical bs aside, i have evols on my new hcr, and cant wait to put a quility 5/8 shaft res adjustable shock on. preferably the exit X1's tripple rate springs.they will make you smile everywhere and not leave you messing with air pressure every temperature change.

get a tripple rate shock! either raptor, exit or any other brand! they soak up cross ruts excellent, lay over easy, yet still have the mid and bottom out for your big hucks! :) i have had floats, float2's, evols, exits, walker evans, ect i think floats have there place in the weight world, but have no place in the peformance area as any quality tipple rate 5/8 shaft clicker shock.

AK... I belive that all FOX shocks that have rebound adjuster on them have 5/8" shafts.

Did you simply upgrade your shocks on your cat with the EVOL kit?

The X-EVOLs have 5/8" shafts that will move a lot of fluid, Jounce bumpers which is the bottom resistance you feel in the coil shocks, extremely good compression control with the DSC feature and rebound adjustments.

I think both types of shocks, when tuned are equally capable in the performance area for huckers like Snowcrossers and freeriders (which represents a VERY small %age of sled owners out there).
