So I am need of a new motor I am wondering if I could put an etec in my Axys chassis? Anyone done this or know of anyone who has? Might as well turn a bad situation into something fun.

Having a competent machine shop build/blueprint the engine.... and making sure that your injectors are clean.... and the clutches are aligned... will go a LONG way to making Your AXYS a real smile maker.... I'm hearing great things about the SLP stage 3 kit..

Run good oil... make sure you protect the sled from off-use storage corrosion... and you should be super stoked with the AXYS...

The very compact 800 HO CFi is a gem of a motor in my opinion.

Adapting another motor, electrical, clutches, pipes etc is a very big undertaking... and will be expensive/time-consuming to do right.

Yeah more curious than anything. My blown up motor is because of a turbo and ran into some overboost/DET issues early on and chose to ignore them because I hadn't put many miles on yet. So I gambled and kept working on different things with the turbo rather than taking the time to inspect my motor.

Plenty of other posts in the turbo section. Nobody's fault but my own.

Thinking more about trying to fit an 850 etec if I could pull it off. Given the likely expense of that I will be replacing the 800 HO and keep on riding.

Starting to see a couple of the ho motors beginning to fail, remember the 11 motors didn't start coming up bad in large numbers until about this time in the 12 season. So I wouldn't be counting this motor in the "gem" category just yet. Is the ho motor as ridiculously priced as the 11-15 motors?

Price likely depends on your dealer, but a new short block is 4900ish retail.

Call up indy specialies, Dan can fix anything you have wrong. Only engine builder that has a warranty that i know of, and he stands by it.

We were actually discussing this earlier. The 850 etec is one wicked motor. Yes it is stronger than a 800HO poo motor. I have both and my axys has the bmp pipe/tune on it and the 850 is still stronger. The throttle response is so snappy on the 850, even better than the axys and the axys was the most responsive sled I had ridden previously. But I think it would be super spendy to put the 850 in the poo chassis cause you will need more than just the motor, you will need all the electronics. Maybe if you found a wrecked 850 that maybe the best option...

Having a custom made pipe will be an huge expense as well.

Not to mention that one of the things that makes the AXYS what it is...it's handing etc... is the lower rotational mass/inertia.

Add a full 10mm to the stroke and a physically larger/heavier engine to the chassis... will alter the balance and nimbleness of the sled.

An new 850 just out of brake in mode just lost a rod in our group. So they are not indestructible either. Axys motor is great.

Going with a different brand is just a tradeoff, they are all plagued with there own set of problems. Go to DOO's forum and read about the new 850, sounds like an 08 XP with a new look. I think I will keep my under powered POS Axys. I think the engine issues have been pretty much gone since 2013. Don't get me wrong there have been failures and I feel for those people but you have that chance of bad luck with any brand. It would be quite a feat to put that engine in an axys chassis, you would have to have a ton of money to pay someone or have awsome fab skills to do the work.

If you want to change engines I'd be looking at the Cat, best motor of the bunch by far.

Won't have a problem finding wrecked 850's.
I think the pinecone joke is too beefy for that sled.
Those things break bulkheads on contact with pine needles.........

I saw one towed out the other day with a secondary separated from the jackshaft.

I'm bummed that my fellow sledders that invested a chunk of cash in their new 850's are having issues

I know I'd feel pretty bummed out ... I know that Christopher has 3 of his sleds down

+1. Never a good thing to see anyone have major issues with their sled. These machines, while amazing, are expensive and when motors go down or bulkheads break it just SUCKS all the way around.

I happened have found an 800 HO for quite a bit less than a new short block, so that is easing my pain.

Would still be fun to make a frakensled if I had the resources.

DOO it!! Bring us back to the good ol' days! My first memory of a mod sled was a early nineties wedge with a 583! It was shiny, it was loud, it was long, most importantly it was fast!

If your going to Doo it your best most cost effective route is to find a wrecked XM due to the expense of all the little parts you'll need.
