Enough is enough!!!!!!!

Enough is Enough!!!!!!!

Today I went to the Division of Motor Vehicles to register my new/used 5th wheel that I bought. I almost passed out when the teller, (teller for the Utah state tax bank.) gave me the total. I was so mad that I went home and sent an e-mail to our State elected officials.

To all elected officials of Utah who will take the time to read this.

Enough is Enough!!!!!!!!
Today I went to my local Division Of Motor Vehicles to register the 5th Wheel RV Trailer that I purchased. It is a 5 year old trailer that I bought from a private individual for $17,000. I was OUTRAGED when I was given the total for my taxes and registration fees!!!!! The total was $1,341!!!!!!!! Here is a list of the things I was charged for, and I know you are all familiar with these charges because I’m sure you all voted for them or agreed to them!

1- MOTOR VEHICLE TAX. $6.00,
This RV 5th wheel TRAILER does not have a “MOTOR”. I paid that tax when I registered my Pick-up truck that has a “MOTOR”, I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

2- ZOO, CULTURAL TAX. $17.00
My trailer has never been to the Zoo and never will go to the Zoo. It has never hauled Zoo animals or Zoo employees and never will haul Zoo animals or Zoo employees because it is illegal to transport people in a trailer in the State Of Utah. So why is my trailer being taxed for the Zoo Cultural TAX????????????? I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

3- COUNTY OPTIONS SALES TAX. $42.50
What is a County Options Sales Tax?????? Why does the county have an OPTION to charge me a tax on something that the State and Local Sales tax has already charged me????????
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

4- LOCAL SALES TAX. $170.00
What is a Local Sales tax. Is that the city that I live in or the city of the Division of Motor Vehicles?????????? Why am I paying Local sales tax when I have already been charged a County Options sales tax and State Sales tax.
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

5- MASS TRANSIT TAX. $93.00
My 5th wheel trailer is NOT A MASS TRANSIT TRAILER. It is illegal to transport passengers in a trailer in the State Of Utah. So why am I being charged for MASS TRANSIT on my trailer. I paid that tax when I registered my MOTOR VEHILCLES!!!!!
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

6- STATE SALES TAX $799.00
$799.00 FOR A 5 YEAR OLD TRAILER. THAT IS MORE THAN THE ORIGINAL OWNER PAID WHEN THE 5TH WHEEL WAS BRAND NEW!!!!!!!

7- COUNTY OPTION TRANSPORTATION TAX. $42.00
What is the County Option Transportation Tax? This trailer is not used for transportation, It is illegal to transport people in a trailer in the State Of Utah and why does the county have the option to charge me this tax when I don’t have the option to NOT pay this tax.
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

8- COUNTY ASSESSED FEE CURRENT YEAR. $135.00
This is another tax that I have to pay every year as long as I own this trailer.
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this tax is spent.

9- PLATE FEE. $5.00
Self explanatory. The cost to make the plate.

10- TRAILER REGISTRATION FEE $31.00
Self explanatory. The cost for the stickers.
I want to know and have the right to know , Where this fee is spent.

GRAND TOTAL $1,341.50
I am the third owner of this vehicle so these taxes have been charged to 2 more individuals beside myself which is also a crime in my book! These high percentage sales taxes should only be charged once per vehicle, not every time it is sold. Soon the total amount of taxes on this trailer will be more than what the vehicle is worth. I am furious with these high taxes and I demand some answers to where all these taxes are spent.

Riverton, Ut.

This is the letter that I sent to the “House”, Utah Senators and Congressmen. If anybody else is fed up with the ridiculous high taxes that we are now paying for our RV’s then I suggest you write to them as well. We cannot just sit back and let them tax us until we cannot afford to enjoy the great outdoors of Utah.

Dude, you live in Utah....the most conservative state in the union. Be grateful you don't live in Colorado where the liberals run free and easy (and wipe their silver-spoon azzes with $100 bills collected from ridiculous taxes). It costs WAY more to register vehicles and pay sales tax here. And the transportation infrastructure STILL sucks and our state budget is in serious duress. Explain that one to me. You Utards can't come looking for pity from me for "heavy taxes".

Hey, I'm from Colorado and that seems pretty stupid to me too. Guess I'll be figuring out how to register stuff in that nifty little state of WY or ID like so many others.

Along these lines goes with the snowmobile licence fees what a freaking joke. We pay 70 to 80 every year but go to id or wy you pay 25 to 30 for a non res. This is bull**** cause I know that were I ride the trails suck ***. So please tell me were all the money goes.

I can't believe the sled fees. CO and WY fees are $30 res or non-res (CO are $25 non res)

How much are hunting tags? I'm starting to get frightened.

:face-icon-small-sho Wow.......I can't get over it costing that much. :yell:

We paid once for our camper (22' trailer).........I think like $178 or something, and that is for a permanent plate on it when we bought it new. We don't ever pay again as long as we own it.

It'd be interesting to hear what answers they give to your questions, if they answer at all.......which was very well written btw.

this is why my boat was registered in idaho, my dad has a cabin there, and the boat always stayed there ;) except when I brought it home to "work" on it. :) If I remember right , it was less than $100 a year.

For being a "red" state, Utah has some of the most seriously f*cked up taxes I've ever seen ...

I cannot for the life of me figure out why Utah has a state income tax....that is a serious crock of ****...

%7 of my income goes to making Salt Lake pretty I guess :face-icon-small-dis

What really chaps my *** is that it's cheaper to buy an out-of-state snowmobile tag than it is to buy an in-state snowmobile tag...

And what makes my *** just sore ... is that the grooming is all done by localities or clubs, the state pays for NO grail grooming whatsoever.....

I'm really trying to figure out how these taxes got voted into place with this state being supposedly so "conservative" ....

I agree completely with you about all of it, except state money DOES fund grooming. Fuel, drivers, etc. Most are state employees. I worked with USA and with the groomers and reports on the USA forum and know that many of them were state employees and state funds both purchased the groomers and fueled them.

Speaking of......I still have groomer locating beacons that I need to get to the state to put on all of their groomers so anyone using helmet communicating systems will get a warning if a groomer is coming. Not very necessary in these parts, but could save someone.:face-icon-small-hap

Does the state only fund grooming in certain areas? I've been told by a lot of Vernal natives that the local clubs have always been the ones responsible for trail upkeep ...

That is true. The state has 9 snowmobiling complexes that it maintains. I am sure there are places outside of these areas that are maintained independently.

What utah should do, is like idaho does and when you register you get to say what county your grooming funds go to.

Sorry now back to our regular scheduled taxation issues.

I have received three replies to the e-mail I sent to the House of Reps. Two of them agreed with me and one of them just wanted me to add my city to the title so he could prioritise. They promised they would investigate, we'll see!, Here are their responses,

1) Hello Kurt
I too think that what you had to pay to register your fifth wheel is outrageous.
I think we need to do something to fix the problem.
Rep Mike Noel R Kanab

2) Kurt,

Many of these taxes pre-date my time in the legislature, but I could not agree with you more! Your honest, and you get gouged. Most folks cheat on the bill of sale to avoid these high taxes. I feel your pain.

YES! You do have a right to know, and I will look to see what each tax is and report back to you.

As a side note as your Representative in Riverton, I want you to know, that I vowed during my campaign to oppose ALL tax and fee increases. I have kept this promise, I have never voted for a tax increase, and I never will.

Thanks.

Representative Carl Wimmer
Utah House of Representatives
District 52
Salt Lake County
Herriman/Riverton/South Jordan

3) In an effort to help manage and prioritize the responses that I give to the mass e-mails I receive, I am asking that everyone who sends me an e-mail please include what city you reside in so that I can respond to those in my constituency as my top concern. Thank you so much for helping me out.

Sincerely,
Kay McIff

I don't mind paying my share of the taxes, but the taxes in the last few years have skyrocketed and they just keep making new taxes and tagging them with a fancy name and we just sit back and take it in ***.

There is absolutely no reason to be charged for a Zoo tax, Mass transit tax and a County Option Transportation Tax on an RV!!!

1- MOTOR VEHICLE TAX. This tax is for all vehicles that travel on roads, regardless whether or not they have a motor. I wish it was extended to those damn cyclists in the canyons.

2- ZOO, CULTURAL TAX. This is money used to pay back the debt on the $100 million or whatever it was for zoo improvements. Just went in last year i believe. and is only for salt lake county residents.

3- COUNTY OPTIONS SALES TAX. You got me on this one???

4- LOCAL SALES TAX. $170.00
Complete a$$ raping here...

5- MASS TRANSIT TAX. $93.00
This is a tax used to fund mass transit lines through the SLC valley. because you and i are now being forced to subsidize it. It cannot support itself cause not enough people use it, there for we have to pay for it.

6- STATE SALES TAX $799.00
6% of the bill of sale... have them write it up for cheaper next time...

7- COUNTY OPTION TRANSPORTATION TAX. $42.00
these are funds to be used at the discretion of the county for road repairs, snow removal, etc...

8- COUNTY ASSESSED FEE CURRENT YEAR. $135.00
county maintaince fees. again used for county roads budget.

9- PLATE FEE. $5.00
Self explanatory. The cost to make the plate.

10- TRAILER REGISTRATION FEE $31.00
Self explanatory. The cost for the stickers.
and to pay the woman behind the counter at the DMV...

And now you know why all my toys and trucks are registered in Idaho...

Mike Noel is a Stud! For those of you who are not familiar with Mike, he is the Republican Representative from Kanab. He is very active in fighting Wilderness here in Utah and he is always present for the "Take Back Utah" and USA-ALL rallies at the capital. He and Carl Wimmer are the only two Representatives that emailed me back with a promise to do something about these high taxes. Mike just sent me another email requesting a copy of my DMV receipt. Now I know that he was not just blowing smoke.
Here are Mikes second and third replies.

Hello Again Kurt
I shared your email with several of my colleagues who think the way I do about
taxes and the direction we are going in this state. I am saddened that you have
to pay the monies that you do to be able to enjoy your recreational vehicle. Part of the answer to the tax problem besides shrinking government, is to
generate more revenues from our public lands mainly from mineral development. We can do this without harming the environment and could in fact be looking at
budget surpluses. Keep in touch.
Sincerely,
Mike

Kurt
scan the receipt and email it to me if you can.
Mike

Here is my receipt.
