Ecoboost Max Tow 4x4 Real World Mileage

Ok, let's hear from you Ecoboost owners that have had time to rack up some miles.

I'm particularly interested in those that have the Max Tow (3.73 gears?) crew cab 4x4 and what your seeing for mileage, loaded and empty. Preferably hand calculated but if from the electronic display please state so.

I'd rather see hand calculated figures because my Toyota Sequoia varies up to 2mpg to the optimistic side and this is over many tanks of fuel calculated lump sum at the end of a multi-tank test.

Thanks.

2011 F150 Ecoboost FX4 SuperCrew 5.5 ft box with 3.73s but no Max Tow. However I do have larger 33.2" (275/70R18) BFG AT tires on it, along with a leveling kit and airbags. Also have Airaid intake. Had this setup since 500 miles.

8300 mile lifetime gauge reads 14.8 MPG. Over 2000 miles towing. Over 1500 towing 5000-7000 lbs (enclosed 3 or 4 place).

I was getting 10.5-12 MPG towing the enclosed all winter, depending on speed and wind.

It seems like I hit 7000 miles and the mileage jumped up.

My last 1000 miles is around 18.5 MPG. And 95% of that is with 2 dirt bikes in the back.

I've gotten as high as 22 MPG on two lane road for 250 mile round trip.

I usually get 17 MPG on the interstate (windy and hilly MT interstate) going 70 MPH with two dirt bikes in the back.

I usually get 16-17 MPG around town as well.

Very happy with truck and mileage. Matches my 03 Cummins mileage.

I almost always hand check mileage vs computer and the computer is almost always within +/- .1 or .2 MPG. And thats not correcting for larger tires. So in reality mileage is just touch higher then I indicated.

How is it on power compared to the 03 dodge.I have a 03 dodge with a CTD I tow a 4 place mirage trailer it weighs 7-9k i tow it up the hills here in northern California i live at 65 foot elevation and ride at 6000 so we do alot of climbing to get where we are going. Do you think the eco would do as well as the 03 dodge 2500?

The first speedo was running empty during an 850 mile round trip.
The next 2 speedos are running the same 850 mile round trip pulling a 25 foot enclosed trailer into a 15-20 mph headwind.
The last speedo is me driving a 2012 F350 with the 6.2 gas on a 2000 mile round trip, pulling a dump trailer loaded with old gas pumps. Headwinds also on this trip.

My 2011 F150 has Max Tow oversize BFG tires and 6.5 foot box. The big difference between the Eco and the 6.2 is that the Eco never feels like it is working hard and doesn't need to rev to red line. The 6.2 pulls hard and sounds awesome pulling to redline to keep it's power. I like the Eco or I would have bought the 6.2 in an F350, I drive a bit hard... Both motors pull hard, just different. I am satisfied with my F150.

If I want good mpg on a trip I drive my 2012 Focus.

Well, my 03HO Cummins wasn't stock. I usually ran the Smarty in the 70 hp tune towing. Also had an air intake, 4" turbo back and the 04.5 up cast elbow and turbo off an 06. I usually ran around 30 lbs of boost at WFO.

With that setup it towed a bit better then any stock diesel I've ridden in. I never towed with that truck stock.

However, I also had an 01 Cummins 6 speed HO. When that was stock, or even just a 60 hp box, I would say the Ecoboost is pretty similar towing. Even towing a 4 place enclosed I will only run 2500-3000 RPM on the passes (4th or 5th gear depending on grade and wind). I would usually do the same on the 01 Cummins (5th gear) in order to keep EGTs in check.

If you have a stock 03 california edition Cummins (like 235 hp 460 ft lbs) I think the Ecoboost is going to outpull that truck. The Ecoboost is 365 hp and 420 ft lbs and probably 1500 lbs lighter.

I've towed the same enclosed trailer on the same route with my Ecoboost and driving my buddies 05 Duramax and really couldn't tell much difference. Ecoboost might run 500 more RPM at times, but thats about it.

I just bought an ecoboost f150 supercrew 4 weeks ago. it has the 5.5 bed & 3.73 gears. I now have 1700 miles on it. 2 weeks ago i went around 300 miles from Boulder to Leadville, Vail & around Summit county for a weekend and got 18 mpg roundtrip not towing anything. This weekend was Boulder to Grand Mesa & all over the central mountains towing a 7 wide x 16 long dual axle H & H enclosed trailer with dirtbikes & polaris rzr. It is a tall trailer. I guess around 4000lbs total plus a truck full of people & gear. over 700 miles I averaged just a little over 11 mpg. My 2006 duramax would have gotten around 13 pulling that trailer and about the exact same mpg on the 1st trip running empty. Overall the ecoboost pulls great going over the passes & tunnel approach, it just runs 1 gear lower than the dmax did. The one place I really noticed the power difference is trying to pass while towing. the ecoboost does OK, but is is no duramax trying to pass while towing on a 2 lane road. The rest of the truck is great.

I have 32,000 miles on my 2011 lariat limited with the 6.2L lifetime avg per computer is 15.1

I have about 4000miles towing around 7000lbs with it. Avg while towing is 9-10mpg

avg empty at 69 mph on the interstate is 20.1
avg mix of town and city after 26000 miles (mpg jumped huge then) is around 16.8-17.5

Overall I bought the truck because it was cheaper then the loaded up FX4 with ecoboost but I wanted the eco BAD. A friend has the Eco and my MPG is same or better in most cases. I'm disappointed with the eco mpg it should easily hand my azz compared to my old school 6.2L tq monster. Overall glad the lariat limited was only available in 6.2L who ever said it sounds great to redline is a understatement! Man it sounds awesome. So far this is my favorite all time truck and as you can see by the miliage I drive a lot of them a lot of miles in a year. Mine is 14 months old fromwhen I took delivery with 6.8 miles on the odo.

Here it is at the 6 month point starting to loosen up while traveling empty

2012 eco FX4 6 foot bed 3.73 1200 miles. Driving interstate @ 78 mph I have been getting 18-19 empty. Still have the cummins so it wont be pulling to much.

I did a 320 mile highway trip the other day. Cruise set at 70 MPH via GPS. Got 19.2 on the way there. Got 18.2 for the whole trip. Hand calculation was spot on with the computer.

9000 miles on my 2011

I love my Ecoboost

I have 18K on my 2012 Ecoboost I got in the middle June. I do two 700 mile trips per month empty. I average 20.2 MPG driving 70 mph. Pulling my 8K 30 ft camp trailer I average 9 mpg. It is a Lariat CC, max tow, HD pk. Weighs 6500 lbs and tows awesome with a 20 mph wind. Very happy with it. I don't need or want a stinking diesel to do what I do. Its GCWR is 17100 lbs and I get no where near there. Ok I might get within a ton of that but still under it.:face-icon-small-hap

12 eco boost

I owned an 01 Superduty with the 7.3 and traded that off back in 08 for a new one with the 6.4 ( wow was that a mistake lol ) anyway the 6.4 had tons of power but I averaged around 10 mpg around town and when we went out west to ride I live in Iowa so pulling a 4 spot across Nebraska i usually averaged about 7 like i said never ran out of power but that 6.4 was horrible. The only reason i ever owned a diesel was to pull sleds out 1 or 2 times a year and maybe a derby car here and there. I traded mine about 2 weeks ago for a 12 FX4 eco boost and I am absolutly loving it so far. I only have 1,000 miles on it but it has great power and is just nicer to drive. plus i think the cab is actually bigger on this one than my powerstrokes were. the only thing is that mine is not getting great mileage just yet. I am averaging about 13-14 around town and like 17 on the highway not pulling anything. does anyone know do they have a break in period where the mileage will start to pick up?
I sure am hoping it does because i love the truck.
what are you guys putting on for leveling kits. I saw a 3 inch for the front and 1.5 in the back but I dont know what I will need. also where do you get the air bags from.
thanks

I can't hardly wait to hook up my trailer to my new purchase. I found a 2011 LOADED Lariat with the ecoboost for $33,500. I'm glad I'm not the one that took $15,000 depriciation in 2 years but grateful for the find. I got rid of a 2006 dodge diesel. Liked the truck, hated paying 50 cents to a dollar more for a gallon of fuel.

I'll post up some mileage numbers after a run a couple of tanks through it.

Pretty happy with my EB MPG

Here is a couple of dash shots from a recent 700 mile trip. The hand calculated mileage ended up being .3 mpg higher so i ended the trip 19.6. I drove 70 to 75 mph the whole trip from SW Wyoming to Monta

Eco or dodge

Thinking about getting a 2013 ford or A Dodge. It looks like about same gas mileage on both. Power looks to be fairly close. Any suggestions

The Eco will tow better (from what I've been reading the eco doesn't require nearly as much rpm because the max torque hits sooner).
Dodge is probably quite a bit less expensive.

Depends how often, how far, what terrain and how fast you want to tow.

Nice.

Thats a little better then what mine will get. I have gotten 19.2 for 200 miles with the cruise set at 70. Seems like 75 MPH kills the mileage.

Do you have 3.73s? Looks like you do judging by your RPM.

And compared to the 13 Dodge. I would say the Ecoboost will tow better with less shifting, but if you don't tow a whole lot or lighter trailers, that new 8 speed tranny in the Ram will be real nice.

Price

The Ford is a lower cost than the Dodge. Same level of accessories. Ford has rear view camera and reverse senders. Based on what I am hearing and seeing, I think I will go with the Ford. Thanks for the input

You will not regret the Eco, the truck rocks. Low end torque, with good tires and the heavy package it will do whatever you want. In low traction situations the tranny is smooth shifting and it pulls hard at low RPM so it isn't as apt to break the tires loose.

Yes my pickup has 3.73s. I think for this engines torque that is the ratio to have.

Go with the Ford Ecoboost. The Ram is a sweet pickup also but wont tow as well as the F150.

I am with GlennRMK that the ecoboost tows like the older diesels. I'm not bashing diesels but for what I tow and several others on this forum. This little twin turbo V6 is capable of doing what I need very well. You wont be disappointed.
