ECM voltage supply issue

whoa, whoa, whoa there boys! that sounds like it is getting expensive! don't think the wife would be too excited about paying for a first class ticket when we need to be saving for the new house. actually she would much prefer me not to even have a sled considering the money i spend on it... :)

as far as the sled goes, i'll take it over to the dealer and have them plug in the digital wrench just to start the process. they have a specific mechanic i want/need to talk to. i'll try to do that tues/wed and see what comes of it.

so i think i figured out/fixed my lacking rpm issue. i changed the spark plug caps. didn't think that would do anything but it was cheap so i threw them in. i went riding yesterday and it was over reving with setup i was currently running (8300-8500+) so i put in heavier weights, the same that i was running last year and it pulled them just fine. thing is flat rippin now. although i did it towards the end of the day so more "testing" is necessary. :) oh, and i saw as high as 8550 on the gauge without hitting the rev limiter.

Good deal, hopefully that takes care of it!

Had you tested out the leads?

no, don't know how to do that actually. i was just at my l local shop and was discussing the my issues with them and the plug caps came up b/c there have been some with them not being on very good. i did have one come off on my last year and remembered they looked pretty black on the inside and i didn't have much luck cleaning them out. the shop had two new ones so i picked them up just so i could check it off the list but didn't expect it to have any effect. as i said i didn't get to ride it a lot with the heavier weights but it seemed to be running much better. more testing will prove if it worked or not.

Ok. They could of very well tested completely fine. Alot of times, they will get poor connections only under riding conditions from vibrations etc... And that can make cause testing problems.

If you have problems with the caps coming loose, or vibrating and creating alot of that black sooty crap.... here's what I do. First verify they snap onto the spark plug snuggly. Then I put some dielectric silicone in the boot itself, and once installed on the spark plug, put a zip tie around the boot and plug. Will help hold the boot snuggly onto the plug, and reduce vibrations.

You can also put a small zip tie around the collar of the plug boot and wire...

hmmm, yeah that is a good idea. especially since i have heard of multiple people having issue with their spark plug caps.

we have not gotten completely off topic from my original post. :) none of this answers the question as to what happens when you ecm volts are out of spec. at this point not so worried about it sense it seems to be running so well. but i'll still check into it.

Definitely check into it! As far as the dealer actually doing someting about it, i'd seriously guess is slim to none.... within specs or not, its not rediculously out of spec, even though it really is according to a service manual.... and i'd bet that checked with 10 different meters, you'll get 10 different readings.

From my experience working in powersports, 100% of properly working components test within or close to specs. FAILED components almost always test WAY outside of range, and I mean no question.. I'd place your results in the "close to specs", and would seriously skip that, and try to focus elsewhere.

But, like I say, their are times when everything tests within specs, nothing makes sense, and you're left with no option but to swap parts. Most ALL dealers will be reluctant to do this, cause it's expensive and if it doesnt work, the dealer eats the cost. (Dealers cannot return electrical components 99% of the time, just like the consumer). Whether the consumer wants them to or not, parts will not be swapped upon request.

Hopefully you have this figured out with the plug boots....
