E85 and boost

Looking to run a newly built supercharged apex on E85. The engine is presently set up with 10/1 pistons but I am considering running this engine at 8.5/1 so I can increase my boost. Any thoughts on max boost I can run with either of these compression ratios at sea level. I am planning to run this sled in an open trail class at our radar runs but have to run pump gas and no meth!

E85 is like any alcohol motor, they like compression...figure I ran 10.5 -1 with 45 psi in my pro mod...and 11.6-1 with same boost at Denver track.

10.5-1 with 20 pounds should be way safe on alky...Problem with any alcohol motor is if you lower compression you KILL bottom end and its very hard to light/burn all the mixture until boost builds. This leads to contamination of the oil with alky....e85's much better at not doing this tho.

That being said, max load on E85 should be around 38 pounds boost @ sea level with perfect spot on tuning with 10.5 to 1.....But I suspect the motors internals will never hold this load. I ran a turbo zx-11 motor on alky at this load, fully built motor...it was a handful...lol

I would also suspect that the rules will change really quick to NO fuel other than gasoline about 2 seconds after you make your first pass.......lmao

That is a huge amount of boost. I have a fully built 1100cc hurricane block with Carrillo rods Je 10/1 pistons and ported heads. Do you think this motor will live at 30 lbs boost on E85? We run 1/4 mile here.

well ya sure have a great motor there, I would approach it very slowly, not knowing how much pressure that block and heads would take before pushing the gasket....we never had detonation problems at 30psi but it did lift the head when we ran the old 7/16 studs, once we went to the 9/16 dia studs and stainless oring/reciever groove deal never had any more issues. But thats a KB (auto) block. I know guys are running that and more in the busa motors. prob start at 20 and inch your way up from there.

We run 2.0 bar (29psi) in the e85 porsche motors with zero issues, 9-1 static compression, 3.6 ltr..street driven...;) 1000 hp

This 1100 block has had the head studs replaced with longer ARP head studs. The block has also had some strengthening done to withstand higher boost levels. I had a goal of 400 hp for this package, so I'm figuring I would need to run this at boost levels around 27 lbs. Have you done any testing with knock sensors? Not having any experience with e 85 I have no idea what the limitations will be and would like some kind of detonation sensor to warn us if we exceed the fuel limitations.

yeah, if your runnin a racepak or motec on the sled there knock sensor works pretty good. Best thing to do is find someone with a GOOD dyno in your area and spend a few days on it, you will learn more in the first day than you would all season on the track... I will never ever run any motor on track before I flog the crap out of it on the dyno. Even if you had to drive 12 hours for the dyno...Do it, time well spent at the level you want to run at. IMHO

Some people mean you will get better tuning by testing in the mountains. lol

The sled is going to Hurricane Performance for dynoing as soon as everything is assembled. Dave is very knowledgeable but has never set up a sled on E85. I have been researching it for awhile and want to push this thing as far as possible without detenation issues.

You might contact Steven or Willie Petersen with xtreme motorworks, I'm sure they would be more than happy to answer some of your questions. They have been playing with E85 pushing 20+ lbs of boost on their Nytro motor. They put their nytro motor in a raptor chassis so they could do some summer running. pretty cool stuff.

Tarzan knows everything about E 85, http://www.snowestonline.com/forum/member.php?u=92498
he has used E85 for 2-3 years, he got great hp numbers on hes nytro.he altso got a cold start setup. remember its only E85 in the summer. It turns to E 70 and E75 in the winter.racefuel E85 is wery expensive. Tarzans friend got 443hp at 25 psi with E85 on his apex:)
