Duluth 2009

i was there. i saw the slednecks freestyle show and was greatly disappointed. they only had two ramps. they threw down some supermans and indian airs. then rogers threw down some backflips. then crashed and dislocated his shoulder. he was the only one to flip. i was hoping to see some flip variations or something new. but i got in for free, but if i paid for that i would of been pissed,

Was it windy? I've been to the Duluth National many times and often it's quite breezy up there, the wind will definitely keep the freestyle guys from showing their best stuff. Even if it's more mental, a lot of freestyle riders will get sketched by wind.......if it's gusty it makes it worse.

Also, I gathered from the audio stream that they had to set up the ramps right before the actual show last night. I would bet lack of practice and possibly poor ramp/landing set up (wasn't there to see if the landings were built right or not, just guessing here) might have affected the quality of the show a lot too.

I'd guess at other venues where there is more room they'll be able to have ramps set up all weekend so the Slednecks can practice and be ready to kill it at showtime.

Those are 3 of the best freestyle riders anywhere, so I'd be willing to bet there was a problem with something for the show not to be extremely impressive.

they had the ramps out there all day friday I think.....but burandt was working on his mod most of the day. something about having it set up for hi-elevation so he was messing with it from what i saw.

i didn't think the freestyle was too great either.....were they charging to get into that too?? we went thru the pits soooo

Hey Myers Racing, where did Dylan Martin end up? I wonder if his win in semi-pro stock was a statement. Sure would of loved to of been there. Sounded like the racing was unbelieveable. Not sure if I like the new qualifying format though. Definitely a fan of the longer races but, the little guy doesn't stand a chance anymore. Pretty much everyone in the finals was on factory backed equipment. It's now definitely all about the first corner. Everyone at this level goes in there really fit so now its more about sled than ever.

not to burst anyones bubble but you guys did go there for the Snowcross races. The freestyle is just a side act. Dont get me wrong I like both freestyle and snowcross (do both). Even if there weren't many flips its still entertaining watching the guys.

Excellent set of races this weekend. I can't remember them having that much snow made for the track in a long time. Too bad both of their groomers broke down and Scheuring had to to truck his groomer down from Planet X to bail out the ISOC. What happened to the sweet Bombardier Air Force groomers the WPSA had?? Tucker made it look easy leading all 30 laps of the final of course, but there was a ton of good racing out there.

This was the first race I can remember in my whole life where there were so many empty seats and places to stand for the finals on Sunday. What happened to all the fans??? It definitley wasn't rideable snow in the midwest. The ISOC is going to struggle if this was any inidication of the year to come. In years past I always remember having to struggle for shoulder room to watch the pro final. Strange!

Actually, they had a record turnout this weekend. 36,000 fans. I was there saturday and sunday. I got there at 8 saturday before races even started, and by 9 the stands were packed until I left around 6... Couldn't move in the challet it was so full...

Semi-Pro Superstock: Dylan Martin 1st, Mike Bauer 9th

Semi-Pro Open: Dylan Martin gets tangled first lap. From half a lap down, manages to take 10th. Mike Bauer, in the mix the entire race, takes 8th

Considering that Martin is not on Factory set-up sleds, like Bauer, and has proven himself without the support of a team; I think he deserves his factory ride back, especially if this momentum carries on to more events.

I was surprised to hear that. I do agree it was jam packed Saturday. I was just puzzled to see so many open seats for the Pro finals on Sunday.

Glad to hear Dylan did good. Not sure where he ended up because at Hay Day's he was still trying to decide what to do.

Bauer is a great kid and his results will improve. He has always been on Cat so there will be a learning curve.

Our Semi Pro rider, Chase Rosemeyer, just missed the Open Finals Saturday with a 3rd in his heat and a charge from last after a first turn hang up in the LCQ to another 3rd.
Stock on Sunday started out better by getting a 2nd in his heat for a direct transfer to the main. Haven't talked to him yet but heard the final was not as good and finished outside the top 10.

1st race of many and I look at it as a success. We got his XP's 7 days before the show and only got a couple days to test. There are quite a few things we wanted to do but just didn't have the time.

We will get his sleds dialed in and let Chase show what he can do!

we did awsome this weekend!

Thats too bad for Rosemeyer. This new format leaves absolutely no room for error. Personally I think taking a third place in a heat race is a great race for anyone, let alone a national semi-pro. I think the 3 round format that wpsa ran would suit the racers' and fans' needs a little better. Snowcross is very expensive, and a lot of time and effort is put into the sport. The 3 round format would give the riders more track time, and make things a little more fair. If a rider gets tangled, just like Rosemeyer, his weekend just about ended faster than it began. The old format also lets each rider face the majority of the competition with a round robin set-up.

From a business standpoint: Lets face it. Snowcross is, as of right now, a dying sport. With today's economy, rider entries are down and the cost of racing is up. To any spectator that doesn't know much about the sport, which is the general population, semi-pro and pro classes are pretty much the reason why they came to the event. Don't get me wrong, at the national level nearly every class has really fast riders (James Johnstad in the juniors and Cody Thomsen in Sport are just a few), but wouldn't it make sense to give the two classes, that the majority of spectators come to see, more track time? The longer these people are at the event for, the more of a possibility there is for them to spend money on our sport, whether it is buying something from a vendor or getting another drink at the bar. That was the only disappointment of the weekend for me. Other than the semi-pro and pro classes being too short, I thought that ISOC ran the event smoothly and was on time, unlike wpsa in the past. As far as the freestyle goes, although it was a little disappointing, it did keep the spectators around. There was a huge gap of time in between racing and the freestyle on Friday, and the spectators still hung around. The bar was packed and people were spending money. I think that the freestyle will get better as the year goes on, and it definitely needs to stay in the line-up. This is just my opinion. I would like to hear some other ones.

So they have freestyle on Friday, did they even do freestyle on Saturday? I left a little early, around 6 (the announcers didn't say anything about what was coming up, so I figured it was about done). But I know they didn't do any freestyle on Sunday, kind of weird. I think it would have been better if the ramps weren't even there, so we could see more of "the abyss".

I def agree that they need to run the 3 race then final format. I had two friends racing in Sport Super Stock, Friday one made the final by A point, the other didn't make it. I think he ended up with 10th which is still good considering it was his first national final EVER. Saturday neither of them made it in. The one had a bad first race, something like 6th, but his second race he did good and ended up with 2nd but he couldn't get a chance to pass because they were under yellow the rest of the race. That really sucked.

btw, cody thomsen needs to be in Semi Pro!! that kid is stupid fast!!! lol
