Drinking and riding? Your opinions please, while we wait for snow.

I often find myself riding with a group more interested in drinking (not just a few) while riding. I choose not to be drunk for professional, safety, and personal reasons. However, I am not entirely closed to the idea, but I would rather not ride alone, and sometimes its my only choice. Ride with the drunkards or not ride at all. I know the law, but it seems its rarely enforced and most just look the other way. Are there any LEO's who would like to comment, or anyone with personal experiences with alcohol and snowmobiles?

Find some new riding buddies.....

I like to get all jack up on mt. dew! or maybe have a redbull or two so I can fly!

I can't lie you might find a beer or two in my pack, will pull off to a nice resting spot on the ride home and take in the enjoyment had for the day with friends. And in my opinion there is nothing wrong with that as long as you know LIMITS!

Bash away.

I'm not above cracking a beer or having a sip of whiskey on the mountain... do it most every time we go out. I don't get anywhere close to drunk though, cuz that just wouldn't be any fun, nor would it be safe for multiple reasons.

I hope you're right. But I've seen way too many drunk people riding ATV's or snowmobiles to believe that you're 100% right. I've seen people that think its OK to be nearly fall down drunk and ride an ATV at the sand dunes as long as they don't get out of 1st gear. And I know its a VERY COMMON thing.

You know, there are few things I like more than hitting the dunes. I don't know why the dunes are the big "let's get drunk and stupid" hot spot of the world. When you have young kids around that your trying to bring up right, it is hard to go to the dunes when you see and hear nothing but a bunch of loudmouths swearing away and seeing the stupidity that goes on there. I personally think it is sad, because I know alot of people that would love to do it, but that crowd keeps them away. I cant say i have been perfect, the most drunk I have ever been was at the dunes. But I was nowhere near my quad nor would I ever be.

As for sledding and drinking. A beer or two is fine with me as most that would actually take beer along for a ride can handle that much. Drinking to the point of even numb fingers is just plain careless and wreckless. The mtn's is no place to be drunk and on a sled. think of how many die where drinking isnt involved, imagine how many less would if they hadn't been drinking. For me, I prefer a small swig of the hard stuff, that warmth just plain feels good.

For the guy that started this thread. Lead by example and find new riding buddies. A freind of mine just bought T-Nytro. I want to go riding with him and throw my leg over that bad boy. BUT, then he tells me how smashed they get so they have the liquid courage and get crazy. Nahh I will stick with the family outings and I have other friends that have turbo's I can try.

A drunk on the trail is not good for anyone. But, having a beer while taking a break and having some muff pot food is fine with me.

I lived in Michagan for a while, drinking while riding takes on a whole different meaning there from what you see in the mountains. You don't have to carry it with you. The trails go from town to town and bar to bar. It is unbelievably common to make the loop stopping at several along the way. Durring riding season one a week dies on the trails. They are very winding, narrow and in trees compared to out west. Usuall it is after 10PM and they dont make a curve and hit a tree.

I've done it back in the flats....long days of riding and end up sitting at the bar to long. I knew it was bad when I was going 25 with my shield up to try and keep awake....lessoned learned on that one.

I don't do it anymore....yep I used to buzz across the lake on the sled to hit the bar and buzz home. Reasoned that it was way better then driving since the lake is wide open and low traffic, plus 4 minutes door to door. Again I don't do that anymore and to be honest getting a DUI is the reason I stopped, I can't afford another one.

After going out west I'd say the best time for beer is when you get back to the truck and have the sleds loaded...then dig the beer out of the snow bank and enjoy. Nothing better then a Kokanee that's been in snow all day.

Our trail system stops @ a bar at my work in our town as well. There have been times we stop at the end of the day and meet up with all the other local riders for a couple hours have a few drinks, but its' not different then say stopping in after work with your co-workers you just gotta no limits, and be responsible. There was only one time that I recall where things got a little out of hand, me and a buddy were done for the day were planning on having a few drinks and ordering some food (spending a few hours at the bar to sober up before we head in), but just as we finish a round of shots his phone rings and his girl is telling him his dogs escaped and he had to get home asap before they wandered onto a main street. We were loaded up on my truck so I had to head back with him. I wasn't totally **** faced, but just on the cuff where you feel all warm and good everything kinda "slows" down, and you're really confident and relaxed..and maybe your leaning a little to the left ;). Oh man, it was like the scene in Return of The Jedi where they are on the speeders going threw the forest.. I swear I was using the force to keep up with him..Still to this day I have never been able to ride that same route as fast as we did that day. We were lucky, and that is something I'd ever repeat again.

"Oh man... are we going fast or did I just drink to much."

If I go for serious ride, I pack 0 beer and lots of water. But sometimes we'll just get some people to go up to a cabin....hang out and have some beers, eat some lunch, bring the girlfriends, that kinda thing. Then I'm ok having some drinks. There's a big difference between having a couple beers and some laughs, rather than getting completely piled and flying off the road...but some people just don't get that so it's easier just to say "don't do it" period, which is true in a perfect world.

Couple things apply to this subject

"There is no perfect world"
"you can't outlaw stupidity"
"there are always going to be those people who try to ruin a good thing for all of us"

common sence applies :beer;

i don;t normally drink or carry beer on the ride but i always have a little mickey of butter ripple schnapps to take a sip of every few stops on the ride. a sip ain;t gonna effect my ability or judgement plus it warms up my throat nicely. I drive 6 hours one way to do my sledding on weekends, and when i'm there to ride i ride not drink. I have all nite long to to get pissed, recover, eat a massive breakfast hit the hills and do it all over again.:beer;

That is just a quick and easier way to guarantee that you mess yourself or your buddies up bad. Imagine how you would feel if your drinking while riding a sled caused an accident that killed a buddy that had young children. Imagine how his wife and kids would feel. Nuff said.

To be honest...I really dont know how people do it. When Im riding I like to be on top of my game, quick, swift, and COORDINATED. Drinking while you sled makes me sluggish, dumb, and just stupid. The beer drinking for me starts when I get back for the day and sleds parked. I guess for me the thrill of riding is enough of a "good feeling"...no alcohol for me...IMO

And then I spend more time digging myself out.

if we stop somewhere i've had a beer with lunch...or a few at the first bar then ride back to the cabin...but I never pack it to take up with me at the beginning of the day. Water and maybe some red bull or monster for me is what I like when i'm ridin.

Did someone say "Monster"? Drink of choice, but I'm on the wagon....couldn't afford the habit anymore.

I love to get so drunk I can't feel my face every single time I ride! Every time we stop I drink at least a fifth of something! Sometimes we get so drunk we have to duct tape our hands to the bars. If we run out of booze I sometimes drink the aftershave at the cabin. We even tried to drink kerosene one time.

Aren't you a bit young?

Drinking while riding? No, I don't think I really need any help wrecking my sled. :o Also I would imagine it would really suck to have a hang over and then have to listen to your sled all day..

i watched some drunk idiot thinking he was cool try to climb one of the play hills on a poker run and he ended up rollin his 97 600 triple about 15 times down the thing...right after a 13 year old kid took the same line he did and had no problems...pretty pathetic!!

couldn't imagine where we ride taking the risk of drinking while riding, but some peeps do. if one of them gets hurt or killed thats a choice they've made not me, if your a grown up make grown up decisions or don't ask for my sympathy!!! know when i was younger we'd get blown away and ride the dunes, wrecked constanly but never asked anyone to feel sorry for me, it was my choice.
