Dragon Reflash & Engine Failure!!

just lost my motor this week. piston skirt blew up, cracked the block, entire things junk. same thing happen to a friend. the top of his piston melted and has a hole the size of a quarter in it. the local dealer said were both **** outta luck. im up for the class action.

Mine just went down also. 400 miles since the update. My dealer says it is belt dust getting sucked into the air intake. Kind of sounds like BS to me, I think there has to more to it. No warrenty.

Pistons

Anyone got any pictures of the scuffed pistons and cylinders? I'd like to see a couple.

The fix is to stop riding polaris products and being their R&D department at your cost. They are not the only game in town and the only way they are going to change anything is for people to take their money elsewhere. They can build quality products but have failed to do so with the 800 since it was introduced. That's ten years of known failure and its still having trouble. I really like the looks of the PRO but im not about to subject myself to the polaris 800s troubles.

AMEN BROTHER!!!

disapointed Dragon owner

I too have had major problems with my stock 08 Dragon 800. Burnt down original motor the first year I had the sled with 700 miles on it. They did rebuild it and was able to ride the rest of the season. I then took it in for the update engine and since then I was only able to get the motor to 7500 rpm took it in two weeks ago and they said the throttle position sensor was off and flashed with the 09 flash. I took it out and it ran great I am just worried that it will burn down again and I will be back in some nasty hole and get to stay the night. I would like to know if any lawyer would take this on I mean really if you can sue because you spilled hot coffee in your lap and win I think with all these problems we could get Polaris to pay to fix the sled. My brother in law has burnt his 09 down 3 times. Please Help find a lawyer for us who is willing to make some money and get us back to being able to ride a reliable sled.

From what I have read and seen there seems to be few major reasons these sled burns down. One, is some engines seem to have excessive piston slap do to poor tolerances between the piston and cylinders. Some are tighter than others which allow them to go longer. The other is these sleds all have a lean spot in the mid-range. IMO if you have made it over 1000 miles with the updated pistons you probably have and engine that is tighter than some. Next, I would highly suggest putting on egts and a fuel controller. I was amazed at how hot these things run in the mid-range if you hold it there for more than a few seconds. Even with a fuel controller if you hold it around 5-6000 rpm your egts will start climbing.

The mid-range needs to be richened up and the top end needs to be leaned out. If you get a fuel controller you will get some rpms back on the top end and keep if from running lean and super hot in the midrange. I would also visually inspect your piston through your exhaust valves to see if you are getting scuffing do to piston slap often. A fuel controller will extend the life of your engine. It won't eliminate the problems with the piston slap, but if you inspected your engines you should be able to tell how tight the engine is. If you have scuffing its time to change the pistons out to better ones (.005 tolerances not .008-.009 that some have) and keep piston skirt/cylinder skirt from breaking off and destroying your case/crank/pistons/cylinders/head/injectors/reed cage. I know this happend to me! IMO

No problem

I have an 09 D8 completely stock, never had any reflashes or the warranty update when they put new heads and pistons in. I waited long enough and rode without any problems and heard that everyone was still burning down even after the updates. With warranty still on my sled I am not going to do anything with the engine or reflashes due to all of these horror stories i have heard the last few years. Its more of a test than anything I guess. I still know that someday this sled may/will burn down, but we will see how long it lasts without any reflashes or updates. I don't know if there is anyone out there who has not done any updates, i may be the only guinea pig out there. Please let me know if there are any "no-updaters" out there.

As for the midrange problem, I have never held a sled at mid range. Other than my older edge sleds, my 09 D8 has never been held at the mid range for more than a second or two. Its not the funnest way to ride, but I am always feathering my throttle going down the trail, its either all throttle or no throttle with my sled and so far, its worked for me. I have gone against other dragons who have had the updates and reflashes and many after market upgrades, and I have walked all over them with a completely stock sled.

Well i guess I'll add to this.
Just bought 08 TD8, baked pto lower rod bearing. Not sure why other than no lube. Have EGT and control box but still no notice. Just went.

later to try and fix.

im in

believe it company can get away with this. Anyone filed a class action lawsuit against Polaris yet? lets get a attorney

worst part about it is these sleds are unsellable. had mine for sale the whole 2011 snowmobile season for a great price. everybody knows about these problems and nobody wants them! this internet thing sucks

This is off topic but would it be alot of work to put a 700 engine in the D8. My friend just blew up his 800 cases and all and can get a good deal on a complete 07 700 motor?

The basic engine should bolt right in

Different pipe + silencer

Diff E.C.U. programming

Diff throttle bodies??????

lighter clutch weights,
diff primary spring,

diff gearing,

POLARIS was running the same secondary combo for 600,700, 800 CFI's 2007-2008 ????

STOP RIDING POLARIS you must not ride a Polaris they ride like a dream

I agree, I LOVE my 07 rmk 600. Sure it may need a little more power but hey, thats why they make big bore kits! I much rather have my little 600 that runs everyday than 3 people's D8's that ride in my group. I swear they have spent more on rentals in the past 2 years than they actually spent on the initial cost of the sled.
