doo xm test ride - impressed

so to start with full disclosure i ride a very well running 2011 pro, have had 07 mod with a 797, 09 dragon that ran very well without issue, edge sleds, 660, 727, 97 700, and an ultra. ie., been on a polaris for a while but no where near brand loyal blind.

spent yesterday in the mountains in essentially ideal snow conditions with the 2013 XM. to sum it up, ski-doo hit a home run with this sled. VERY impressive. i never cared for the rev, and hated the xp (i've spent significant time on both) but i would have NO problem own and riding the new xm. it flat out works and that etec is a beast and ran HARD all day without a single hiccup. there were six of us riding it and none of us were nice to it and it never got a brake (is that that correct brake/break??). and it will jump over 100 feet... :) obviously it still feels different than a pro but it is just as easy to carve, side hill likes a machine, and powder turns just as sharp, if not sharper (hard to tell honestly. any difference either way is insignificant). and for all the comments i heard about how bad it was on the trail, we did not see this. it did fine and handled the bumps and trails as well as anything we had with us. we also disconnected the sway bar after awhile and although i didn't notice much of a difference the guy that was on it the majority of the time said he could tell a big difference. said there was a lot less feedback through the suspension/handle bars when carving and cutting across other tracks on side hills.

the only complain or criticism i had was it actually had too much ski lift. which is the complete opposite from the horribly handling xp. on steep hill climbs the skis lift to the point that will cause it to loop out. where my pro keeps the skis closer to the snow and can go longer without causing it to loop out. with that said, i felt it was pretty clear, on a straight shot hill climb, the xm will out highmark a stock pro in most cases. more testing will need to be done in less than ideal snow conditions to see what it feels like in that situation. oh, and the guy that sent it over 100 feet said it needed better shocks...

to sum it up, i haven't been this impressed with a ski-doo since 2000 when i was riding my POS 96 triple piped 133 ultra and i rode my brothers brand new 2000 summit 700 for less than 10 minutes. knew i needed a new sled immediately... so, doo finally has a sled that handles like (in my opinion) a sled should.

honestly, and in no way intended as a bash, i'm a little concerned about cat b/c with the popularity of the pro, how well this new xm runs/rides, and the issues the pro climb had this year i can't imagine there being very many pro climbs sold next year. demo rides do wonders...

(so what's the under/over on how long it takes DA fredie boy to jump on this thread and start jumping up and down screaming his head off. remember, it is better to ignore a troll rather than feed it...)

Ski lift might have been setup..?? The '10 and newer XP's have WAY too much ski lift, but that is easily remedied :face-icon-small-win
The XM I rode had significantly less ski lift and a much more level attitude at all times than my '12 XP which made it easier to sidehill without wanting to go up the hill.
Thanks for the review.

Good review. So to sum it up, Ski-doo does not have a game changer but a sled that put them smack dab back into the game?

yeah, that is a good way to put it. they finally managed to get the xp to handle as good as a polaris. any advantage doo has is the etec. it is a strong and proven motor, where polaris still has some manufacturing tolerance issues. better than before but still room for improvement.

Thanks, this is the type of review I want to read. I also know a guy who rides a 2011 etec and he was very happy with the XM. He is probably an average or slightly below average rider and he said the XM was much easier to ride for him. Sounds like Doo has a sled to propel them right back into the big picture. Came at the perfect time, I know many Doo guys were about ready to jump ship.

So the big question. Did you like the Doo enough to consider one over your Pro?

Pro or the XM?

Excellent non biased review PV! Now comparing the 13 Pro changes to a 13 XM changes (same year both with new changes) would you jump to an XM?

Thank you for the write up.

no, i don't think i'll be jumping ship. i already snow checked a 13. i have been hearing impressive comments and reports (not from the internet) about the 13. plus there is no way i could get an xm for anywhere close to what i paid for the 13. but i don't think you could go wrong with the xm its pretty BA. kinda hard to hate on the etec too. even with the motor issues (broken cylinder skirt) i've had with my pro i don't get to excited about all the issues i read about on the internet. maybe i would be looking at it closer if my dealer (akhp) didn't take care of me so well and if i didn't have to deal with the ski-doo dealer (amds). i know some love amds but you pretty much have to have the bro hookup to be taken care of. the word is they are working on it so hopefully it will improve. huh, sorry didn't intend to turn into dealer criticism. i have been very happy with my 11 overall. i'm pretty abusive to my sled and it has held up quite well.

Thanks pv but that makes it even harder to decide new pro or new xm I am like you love my pro 2011 163 no problems in 1500 miles but would like a :rockon:new one with a warranty mine is up 12-2012 so thanks for the open minded review

I'm on the fence here too. love my 2011 pro, rode skidoo 6 years before that. My cost is the same, as long as I do the demo ride with skidoo and get $300 off. I think I'm staying pro, as my 2011 has rocked, but that etec is tempting.

Excellent review, pv. This is what I was waiting to read. An XM review from a Pro guy. Look forward to the chance to ride one myself.

Thanks PV for the unbiased review.I will be spending next year on my 12 Pro till the warranty is up then I will definatly be demo riding a XM.I am hoping to get 3 trouble free years out of my Pro as its way too costly to switch sleds all the time

I really need to stop reading these reviews...

Joe

Right there with ya Joe!!!:face-icon-small-dis:face-icon-small-dis I still havent got enough miles on my new Pro to get completly used to it, because of bad snow and a new job that I couldnt get enough time off to go to the mountains. I rode my buddies new 2012 Xp and I couldnt beleive the way it handled compared to my old 09 XP it was night and day, and now they say that this is way better:face-icon-small-con Got to give the new Pro one more year, plus I love having my dealer intown instead of 35 miles away for a Doo and parts if I need them, and no discount what so ever??? All my buddies are going for a new one next year so I am going to sit and wait, I hate new year models anyway!

i am not able to demo the xm, but i called my dealer and asked what the deal is with it. basically he said its an xp with new skin and that crazy rear suspension. that made my decision easy, i don't like the xp at all.

I think it will be a good sled. Typical Doo quality with better handling. I do like the Polaris Clutches better and the fact the chassis is stupid light and rigid. I also wonder how many miles people are getting on their Etecs. Sounds like more miles with less issues than the poos however I am still wondering how long an etec with last. I do not have much faith in Doo motors from series III on. I have just seen way to many rebuilds. The 600 and 800 single ring designs just have not proven to hold up. I've rebuilt several. I hope the etec is different.

Finally a review I've been waiting to hear. I think you may have clinched it for me sir, and for.that I thank you.

again, it is NOTHING like an xp. i have spent a significant amount of time on a couple different XPs. i HATE the xp and would never own one (slightly over stating but you get my point). if it wasn't for the dealer difference there is a good chance i would be on an XM rather than the pro. IMO, both doo and poo have their motor issues. i lost a cylinder skirt and needed an entire new motor. got to love the 4 year warranty...

Could that ski lift issue be actual horsepower? :face-icon-small-ton

I'm only kidding. Thanks for the honest review pv.
