Do you use ice scratchers?

ya know, considering what i have read on here im really surprised at how many of you say they are a must. When i got my first mountain sled this last fall i really thought i would need them to ride in the black hills. But even last weekend i rode in about 3-4inchs of pack TRAILS for at least an hour at a time for quite awhile and as long as i hopped off the trail for awhile i never really got hotter than 140. Then again that might be cuz i only weigh 145 ;)

I think it has as much to do with lubricating and cooling your hyfax as it does throwing snow on your heat exchanger. But, I use them, especially on any modded sled.

Just started using them last year, and now wish I didn`t wait so long. The only reason for me is the overheating issue of the motor in icy no powder conditions on the trail. No more pulling over trying to find descent snow to kick or shovel into the track, only to have the temp light come on in two minutes. Even getting off trail now and then didn`t help in these conditions for very long. After installing scratchers, (Holz for me) no more temp light or overheating.:D

never leave home without them.

every once in a while i trash one from reverse or rolling backwards a bit and forgetting I had them down. Intelligence....limited sometimes.

Every sled we have runs the spring type. Tryed the cable type two years ago and found they didnt work when you really needed them...icy - or very hard packed trails, they just couldnt apply enough down presure to cut the ice or hard packed snow. Dino

I use em all the time on anything resembling a trail....why not?? Never broken one....to be honest I have no idea how some people are in and out of reverse so often?? I use reverse to back off my deck and that's it....

Yeah me too except I don't even use rev, can drive out the front. Heard all the horror stories about the 08 Cats, figure if I don't use it much it'll last longer!
Had scratchers since my 2nd ride on my first mtn sled, back in 01. They're the single most important accessory on a paddle track sled, IMO.
I swear you could make a fortune if you started selling them about 3-4 mi from the parking lot at any popular western riding area! Just head out with a pack full of ice scratchers, cordless drill and beer and flag down everyone who's hyfax is melting/engine overheating.
