DIY Upper Console Vent

Thought I would share this with the community... A little time consuming but I think it was worth it. I made a pattern in CAD, used a spring punch to mark the holes, then drilled them out with a 3/16" drill bit. I still need to de-bur them but didn't have the right tool (I need to get one of the hand chamfer style debur tools).

I am debating whether to do this for console area by the Knees which would be about 400 holes!!...or just buy the Holz ones.

When u stop.. riding..

Can u feel heat coming out from the holes???

I did it last night so not sure. Same theory as the Holz ones but I didn't like having the vent in front of the gas cap in case you spill and have gas go down to the engine bay. The idea is to act like a chimney and allow some hot air to escape up high.

I thought about charging for the template but to be honest it didn't take that long to do. So, just download it, print it, and use it. It's FREE!!

Click on this link and you can download the PDF of the template:

the one advantage i see of using the holz is for support, the portion of the panels in front of your knees where the safety stickers are at are very weak, pull your side right side panel off and give your pull rope a tug and you'll see what i mean. drilling up near the consol is a great idea, the panels there are pretty solid...

Thanks. After thinking about it, I tend to agree. Especially, when your knees slam into the panels. The aluminum frame is probably a must in that part of the console. I assume most people remove the tool pouch on the clutch side as it looks like it blocks some air flow out of the clutch.

Also here is a top view of my mod with both sides drilled out...

Very nice job.

I bet he will. I feel it coming out of the Holz vent in front of the gas tank. In fact that's were I stick my goggles when sitting to dry them out.

Awesome job John!!

As a pointer for others doing this job... you will get a very accurate drill job if you use a brad-point bit (made for wood)... this locates the hole very well and the drill does not wander.... they work super well on plastic.

Also... John... make a template for the area between the filler neck and switches...more venting area there too.

Happy Holidays to all!!

Really?

I don't have enough miles on mine yet,,,,and only flatland.

Are these things really building up a ton of underhood air? Or only under circumstances where a guy/gal never gets off throttle all day?

I tend to make a run then catch my fat assed breath when out West.

Hmm, this will give me something to do until my turbo kit, track, drivers, and Kmod kit shows up. Not to mention snow...

Another use for the template....I took the same template and drilled out every other hole and used it in this pattern to do my left and ride side consoles. The plastic is still strong enough and in my mind looks a little cleaner then riveting the mesh style. However, I am sure the mesh vents have a little better air flow but this is free. Note: it is time consuming.

Thanks for the input! That looks really nice and I'm going to do the upper mod to both Mamma and My sleds. I'm afraid I stuffed my right knee into my lower console hard enough last year that I have a semi circular broken area. :face-icon-small-con
So I may have to get one of the kits just to "mend" the broken area.:face-icon-small-dis
But I'm with you, I like free home done mods! Thanks for this one!

Had an idea, yo ucan use a dremel with a cone stone on the end and that will debur the holes ;)

Your free mod looks great. Can't believe I didn't see this post last season.

I'll be doing it to mine when I pick it up from summer storage at my friends house.
Thanks,Pete
