Dish or Direct?

DirecTv

We've had DirecTv for about 5 years and it's great.... We've only had maybe 1 or 2 problems in that time and the customer service was great. 4 tvs total, 2 with DVRs, and awesome signal strength... takes one he!! of a storm to disrupt the signal... maybe once a year for 5 minutes if that that the rain will wash out the signal.

Never had Dish, but will never get anything but Directv after having 'em.

I have Dish. No problems with customer service or signal strength. I chose Dish over Direct because of price and I liked the easy operation with the T.V. guide. That was in 96 and I haven't changed since. The Brother in-law got Direct and I hated to use it’s guide. Pet Pev

Alright.... we are going through this debate right now too. My wife called a local company that sells both Direct and Dish. They have convinced her that Dish is the way to go. It looks to me like Direct is a better choice. If we get Dish Net, am I going to regret it?????

Glad to see this thread. I have been on DirectTV for about 6 years but I also got the offer from Dish for the cheaper service and the DVR and I was thinking about pulling the trigger. Looks like I won't now.:)

I am the opposite as you. I have been seriously considering yanking Dish....they have really pissed me off over the 18 months contract I have had with them. Now the contract is up and its bye bye! I can get the DVR from Direct and save 20 bucks a month.

.

I've had Dish for approx 10 years and have little to no problem. I got HD about 8 months ago and it works great too... I had one small issue with a DVR and I called customer service and I had a new one within 3 days. When I upgraded to HD I canceled the first service and signed back up under my wife's name to get the new customer discounts. The installer called me, asked what worked for me, came on a Wed night and had everything setup within an hour. He even got me a second dish for free to take to the cabin/camper.

I'm not sure how long it's been on Dish but I just found Fuel TV the other day and now I'm set. A friend has Direct and he is in the process of getting switched over to Dish because of all the customer service issues he's having.

I have had more problems with dish than I care to type, it would take me litterally weeks!!!! Im not joking here either!!! Pure stupidity!!!!!!!!!

Stay away from DISH!

I am so glad that I saw this thread. I just signed up for Direct TV and they haven't even been able to come out and set it up so I was kinda double guessing it, but after reading this I think I am going to keep it.

Had nothing but problems with Direct TV on the hookup and charges for HD and service on install and on & on & on & on etc. Didn't like what I knew with Dish so opted to go with Cable TV and am totally satisfied with price, product, and service. Have switched all services to them with just one bill.

Totally happy.

I have Dish and am 100% satisfied. I have used both, I think Dish is easier to get around and they don't spam you with a bunch of pay-per-view channels in the middle of regular programming. Dish offered better deals, installation was great. They even came back and ran another line because I need to have the cable modem into my living room. (I told them they were using the line I had planned on using for the modem, so they ran a seperate line for the Dish).

Dish also has the best HD. They don't degrade the signal near as much as Direct TV does, although NOTHING compares to FIOS. If you can get a FIOS connection do it. 100% no degrade on the HD, and the internet speeds will blow anything out of the water. Not a lot of areas have FIOS, you better live in a populated city, maybe a new development. Comcast's signal for HD is horrible, and severly degraded.

let hem know your changing to Direct! we did and they put us back to the original $46.99 a month. by the end of our contract we were upset as H$ll with getting raped w/$70.00 a month. They came thru when threatened.:face-icon-small-coo

I have Direct TV and have had no problems. I looked into FIOS but I can't get it at my house. Less than 2 miles away it is available.

I switch every 2 years when my contract is up !! Get new equipment and the lastest equipment. I just love DISH for its DVR 30 sec. instant jump, Directv you have to watch ****t in fast forward. We record 90% of what we watch and jump them fricken commercials !!! :D

Wow, talk about varying opinions. One thing we have going for is the local dealer seems to be pretty good, I dont know how much that helps though.

Jacked

Well Direct just jacked me on the UFC 100 fight, I was working and the wife ordered the fight and TiVo it for me, I get home about 1/2 hour after it started turned on my HDTV and the fight was not there? I switched to the non HD station and it was there? I asked my wife and she says she ordered it using the remote on my non HD TV so they sent it non HD.

I call Direct they say well it was my fault I should of ordered it with the HDTV remote? WTF??? after a long battle I find out there are 4 ways to order a pay per view:

1. With the remote on the HDTV set, only get it on HD Channel on that TV set and it is $10 more!
2. With the remote on any other TV set and only get it on non HD channel
3. Call and order it and pay a $5 service charge!
4. Order online and get all channels on all TV's ($10 extra for HD still applies)

and since I called 30 minutes after the fight started there was no way I could change it! so in the end I had to pay twice for the fight (to get it in HD)and I will fight that battle when I get the bill!

Results to follow, but be careful when ordering any PPV.

I've had both.

Programming: Direct (only because of NFL sunday ticket, and MLB extra innings)

Customer Service: I've never had a problem with dish, I've gone round and round with direct tv though (long boring story that nobody wants to hear)

Ease of Use: Dish by miles. Direct tv's menu's suck (really small letters for menus, maybe the tivo is better though). Dish menus are simple easy to read (LARGE LETTERS). I have not so good eyes so being able to read menus without squinting is pretty important to me.

I'm staying with dish.

Dish or Direct

Thinking about getting a 2 year subscription for someone who can't afford good TV and only gets 2 channels. They have no cable available where they are. Which satelite provider would be the best one to go with as far as reliability, access to local stations, service and what not. Are there any other providers other than the 2 mentioned? Please chime in.
