Seems to me the manufacturers should take the mechanical feed back out of the whole system.
With the electronics available today they should be able to do all the shifting with a servo motor.
I know ten years ago servo positioning systems were available for industry that would do the job.
Most of the feed back is already available to the computer, maybe track speed is all that is missing.
