Diesel Performance and Emissions

So I wanted some input on guys in Colorado who have diesels and doing tuners, exhaust, and delete kits on them.

I just bought 2013 and wanting to put on a H&S Race Tuner and exhaust, already got the intake.

I live in the Springs and the emissions require annual checks to pass, sounds like I can get away with taking on and off the pipe and passing the field test just fine.

Anybody doing the similar setup and how they are getting around it?

Thanks!

Hrmm, mine isn't tuned but it does have full mbrp exhaust.

I took mine to performance wise service center in wheat ridge... Super quick and painless. May call them and ask their advice, they'll shoot you straight based upon my experience.

All 2012 or newer vehicles have a 4yr exempt, so I could register it without needing an emission test first and not worry about it

Don't you have to get it tested again every so often? I wasn't sure how that works. I live in the mountains so no emissions for me - :face-icon-small-ton

The 2012 or newer you don't have to once you register it for another 4yrs

Anything older is every year, depending on the county

There are ways around these tests, not exactly legal but its not exactly legal to remove emissions equipment anyway.

You can find out where the roadside checkers will be. Look them up on the website, put your plate on your buddies stock truck. Drive by a couple times in the set time period.

When I had my f250 Powerstroke checked they said it had to be tested every two years in El Paso county to get plates. I assume they told me the truth......

I would just add the tuner and not do the exhaust. you'll gain some, but still pass emissions when it's do. I've installed a couple of the h&s kits and when you do the exaust, the truck is no longer street legal. The hand book has it posted all over it.

On my 2002 truck I had to take it in every year once I was past the "exempt" period (4 years). You can't just drive by one of the roadside stations, you have to take it in to a diesel shop and put it on a dyno and load test it. I went to a place in Henderson (DynoMan) - and paid about $55 per year if I remember right ....

I have not had to do anything on my 2011 yet obviously, but I would expect it will be the same in a couple more years.

Let me hook up to the Duramax anytime and see how much torque you got:face-icon-small-ton

BUT, I would gladly pull your trailer when needed. Im buying a sled deck for my personal use...Gosh, I hope that 6.7 is enough:face-icon-small-win

Why not trade it in on a Duramax so you have all the power/torque you’ll ever need:face-icon-small-ton:face-icon-small-ton

Just bustin' your balls man...that black truck will look good pulling my trailer:face-icon-small-coo

I honestly don't care about the power, I just want a cleaner running engine and better MPG

The way DPF "works" is by far the worst thing on a diesel engine.

If you install the tuner with no DPF delete you're kind of going in circles. H&S had to put that on their product so they didn't get fined by the emissions BS.

⬆⬆ yup,i've got a 2010 Dodge with a cummins i use to haul my sled trailer and drive daily. When it was stock i got 10-12 mpg (no trailer)no matter how you drove it.at 5,000 miles i did a dpf delete and an H&S mini-maxx tuner. Now i get high teens lower twenties for mpg(on summer diesel, not driving it like a tard) a solid 15 mpg on winter diesel, and 12-13 mpg in winter hauling my sled trailer(depending on wind). The thing that pisses me off,is its all a scam. They don't give a crap about the environment.how does choking down my truck motor help the environment when you end up using 30-40% more fossil fuel to make it burn "cleaner",lower the reliability of the motor at my expense.and in some cases accompany a dpf system with other rare earth substances like Urea and platinum.Move the pawn around all you want, but not at my expense.

What kind of economy are you seeing out of your 6.7? I've seen as good as 21 on the interstate and more like 17 around town.

I live in Wyo, so no emissions testing, yet, but I was thinking about a workhorse piggyback chip for my 6.7, but am still nervous about voiding the warranty on my $60,000 truck. The workhorse is supposed to be undetectable and won't mess with your emissions.

Question, you reading mileage off of the display? Or calculating it by hand? Because when you add a performance chip or program, it will make the mileage redout display inflated numbers. Although, yours do sound about right, not like some people you talk to throw a chip in there and crank it up to extreem and rant about getting 30 MPG...LOL!

With those wheels and tires Im getting 15mpg in town and like 18 on the HWY...not the best

I trying to find out if the PCM can detect if you have messed with the engine at all, if not I will be adding the H&S tuner

As of right now Dodge is the only one Ive heard of who cant tell if the DPF was removed.

I know the 2013 Ford's got a new PCM from the 11's and 12's, so maybe they got smart

Hmmm, I wonder if the ECM is different because of the EPA cracking down on tuners and delete packages?

Mine was a left over 12. 3000 miles so far, absolutely love the truck.

I left the wheels stock and plasti dipped the rims.

yea, not sure. Im sure Ford was getting tired of warranty work on truck that they could tell were tampered with.

I just read the rapid screen website and it says that diesels can't participate; I'm assuming that’s really true.

I know it sounds ridiculous but one of the considerations we had when we were buying a house was if the county we lived was exempt from emissions. We ended up in Elbert County so we are exempt for now. I guess if something changes we will re-register out of state.

It’s not exactly legal(but this whole thread is talking about breaking the law) but a couple states will allow LLC's to register vehicles, Montana being one of them. There are several attorneys up there that will set up the LLC and mail you the plates. If you buy a trailer and register it there it’s a one-time fee for a permanent plate, they also have no emissions testing on vehicles, and have no state sales tax. So if you buy a $50,000 truck and register it in MT you would save $4000 in taxes (at 8%), about $500 in registration fees, (my truck was $400 in MT vs. my wife car was $900 in CO, both equal value) and have no emissions testing. There’s a reason most of the Ferraris in town have MT plates, it’s not because they live there, it’s to avoid taxes on $250-400K. You can also get titles and plates for ATV’s and RZR’s there so if you want to go to Idaho or Moab where it’s legal to ride on the road with a valid registration you will have one.

Before anyone gets bent out of shape, I’m not advocating tax evasion or avoidance. It’s your own moral compass you have to deal with. Once in a blue moon someone gets caught and has to pay the fine but it’s usually a neighbor or someone you pizzed off that turns people in for it. If you’re a terrible driver and get pulled over regularly you might eventually have to explain the cop why your truck isn’t registered in CO. Usually telling them you work out of state or are a part time resident works unless you really did something to make them mad. Roll around town blowing black smoke out of your new truck, you might get a ticket….and probably should…
