DEEP DEEP snow track speed XP

Ok guys, I am wanting some comparisons. 08 and 09 XP's, track length, approximate elevation, clutch setup being run, 3 plus ft of powder. And mods done if any. What are people seeing for track speed in the rediculous deep? Especially on pulls of 15 to 30 seconds WOT?

On Sunday we had my dads 08 XP 163, all stock with a can, 4 ft of deep, kinda heavy pow but no base, in the trees without the track coming free of the snow it seemed to be 36-38 mph in a 15 to 20 second pull. 7500 ft of elevation.

Mine has a head, little different can, and airbox mod with added weight to the clutch and a 19t top gear, same conditions otherwise seemed to be 40 to 42 mph.

How are other peoples numbers stacking up? These seemed kinda slow to me? Does anybody have any ideas of clutching to try?

i have an 08 and the most i ever see lately is 35mph and thats with stock clutching and gearing with the exeption of the big stiff *** yellow secondary spring from my dealer. i picked up 5mph with the spring but the sled was better when it was new i think my motors bagged out and needs to be done. (3300kms and all of them hard miles on the bar) and i have to run clicker 6 to even see that kind of speed and keep 8200rpm. the primary is all new and the secondary was just apart 2 rides ago and everythings good.

i suggest a power adder haha

Track speed seems to vary ALOT. Snow conditions, rider weight, track length and weight, altitude, hill steepness etc....
I like to go by the LOWEST MPH seen....like at turn out on a deep hill when you are almost out of forward momentum. On our 100% stock '09 163 this was 35mph. With our clutching it was low 40's at the SLOWEST. Normal conditions closer to middle 40's, spring snow it jumps to mid 50's.
Went with a 174 2.5" track and still seeing low 40's in the deep at 7,000ft.
For comparison our '09 Dragon 800 163 2.5" was spinning at 35mph on the same hill same day that the XP was showing low 40's with the 174.
The "max" mph on the gauge seems to read quite high, these are all analog.

Stone, how long does it have to be pinned to do that?? What track, what motor work and clutching??

Dan, what is this big yellow spring? Secondary? How did it effect overal performance?? RPM, track speed, rpm sustainment?

And what does everyone suggest for gearing?

I had a ton of weight in my sled on setup snow and was running 50 plus. But, that setup didnt work at all under hard load of deep Washington snow.

My 07 (08 motor) spins the 159 at 40mph in the slowest, deepest crap I can find with a hot clutch. Usually more like 42-44 in regular pow. When the snow gets a little harder more like 50. Stock with a can. I took winterbrew's advice on some clutch parts.....before than was seeing 36-38 with much more belt heat.

I was also surprised we didn't lose more with the 70lb track. We geared down with both drivers and gears, it just plain works good.

08 xp,154, 4 runs on a hill that I barely make it over, 1 to 2 feet of fresh wind blown, stock with can, CRA clutching, 51 mph on digital, (average of 4 runs) hard to tell but analog seemed to run 46, 47, 48mph on last three runs.

I also am running a 383 belt and I could put my thick skin hands on the clutch after 4 runs. Me happy, run well today! 120 miles on belt and still looks good.

Sounds like another nice setup. I have control over the belt issues, I dont build a ton of heat although my secondary seems to run hotter than my primary now, does anyone think there would be an advantage in gearing my setup UP slightly? Im at 19 49, would 20 49 be a net gain do you think?

In Nov 08 when I was testing my clutch kit on the 2009's...

Revelstoke Superbowl
2.5 feet wet fresh heavy, almost raining out.
W/240 lb operator
Dead stop starts from bottom of bowl on the left side facing up.
Stock track speed 31mph
Clutch kit track speed 34mph
Clutch kit with mod ramps 35

Once you look down and see track speed stop gaining, reduce throttle until the sled is about at the speed where it will get stuck then apply full throttle again and watch track speed increase.
Listen for "rpm recovery" and "track whirl recovery"

I thought track speeds were low however all of the riders/spectators mentioned that these kind of speeds are good in today's snow here.

Joe, I did just as you suggested. I was in the trees so it was pretty hard to watch the gauge but with all of my setups I have run when I back out of the throttle, then nailed it again, rpm would lunge to 82 to 8300 and track speed would increase then rpm would be pulled back down, and track speed would fall away.

It just seems like actual track speeds, found either from easing up to the hill and nailing it or tree riding should be a minimum of 45 mph in the deep. Maybe I am just wrong but I dont understand the low low numbers.

Ok, so let me ask this. In a senario swinging around a tree at under ten miles per hour, nail the throttle for 50 ft in 3ft of powder. What can you expect your sled to jump to for track speed?

Lets hear from some big bore guys. What are they doing under these same conditions? Burst, full pull, ect.
