After learning about Hayden Ellengford's accident, it got my wife and I a little upset. A life is just to precious to not do what you can to save it. So yesterday I went and bought us all the equipment we need. I got me a Ort. S1 and my wife a D3, shovels and a probe for each of us. When the kids do more riding we will get each their own beacon. We didnt really have the money but like my wife said," Catch 22, cant afford them, but cant afford to not have them." I already had a survival pack for me so i also got my wife set-up with one. Really would like to get an ABS, but just cannot swing those right now.

I hope all of you out there that dont have beacons and the other safety equipment will go out and get set-up. Truthfully, what is more important? A set of pipes for instance or a life???

good for you!!!!!!! now, make sure toMAKE your riding buddies do the same. then PRACTICE with the beacons! they are fairly easy to use, but you don't want to be learning how the thing works in a real emergency!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't get a false sense of security from buying beacons and probes. The best thing you and your wife could possibly do would be to take an avalance seminar.

To sum that up in a nutshell ... if you have to use avalanche gear, you've already made too many mistakes. The whole point of those classes is to teach you how to avoid a bad situation entirley, and then in the unfortunate event that you weren't able to do that, how locate somone who is burried.

You purchasing the Probe and Shovel could very well save a life other than your own, Education is what will save yours. Like has already been said. If it gets to the point you switch the beacon over to recieve, a mistake has been made. We are going to stop riding with our buddies that wont pony up and get the proper gear and training. To me if they dont care about there own life...fine. What if was one of our group was under the snow? If your friends still dont care, find better friends.

Made the decision a few years back that I wouldnt ride without my beacon and accessories. Also decided I wouldnt ride with anyone without the above mentioned. Good decision on yer purchase........

We have already done the avalanche training two years ago. Honestly the past few years was the first ones I had been back on the snow for several years. Until the end of last year we really hadnt got into the avy country so I didnt think much about getting totally set up. Another thing that helped was during the summer my father in law and my uncle, that we mainly ride with, went and got beacons. I dont think think they have shovels and probes though, but they will now! Until then no one in our group had any, now we have four.

We have planned in the next few weeks to go out do a safety day. Going to practice with the beacons, practice probing, even try to see if we can figure out the fastest way to dig. I am also going to spend some time teaching my wife and children how to build a fire with whats in the packs. Find the best place to make shelter and how. Ways to get water from melted snow. How to make signals for helicopters to find you easier ect. Like I said, we are getting serious and I hope others will too.

good for you!!!!

Now teach the kids and preach to your friends.

see you up by Bald soon as it gets safe.

it sucks it takes a bunch of people dying lately for people to realize you have to have equipment to be prepared for something that might happen. i dont know how many of my friends that ride without beacons or did not get them till this year.

do not buy a 2,3,4, 10k snowmobile and not carry a beacon for a couple of hundred and safety equipment.
check reports learn, live hopefully

maybe you can learn from what is happening backcountry skiers alway carry beacons if they are smart. snowmobilers are always in the backcountry

more people die every year snowmobiling then skiing
