does anyone know what this special cyl hone looks like used on this update. I taked to a mech at one polairs dealer,he does not hone cyl before update. Will be picking up my sons 09 d8 switchback & my 09 800 switchback tomorrow after updates.I am going to ask to see this hone.

The correct one likely has a Polaris Part # on it. Any small automotive/RV hone should work OK too. They are a 3 fingered device, each finger has a piece on the tip about 1/4" to 1/2" by 2-3" that is the same hone material that you use for sharpening knives, fine grit, black/grey color. The fingers are spring loaded so they exert pressure on the cylinder walls and the device fits in a drill.
There is also a deglazing hone that isn't the right tool for this job. It has a shape like a Xmas tree without the taper-lots of branches with carbon like tips.

hone

I have been a mech for over 40 years i know what a hone looks like, but this 600$ one must be special.I just wanted to know how to recognize this one

You can purchase a Lyle Hardback Hone with stones made for Nicasil for less than $220.00. It's not quite the quality of the sunnen but will last your typical backyard mechanic a lifetime.

New pistons and no honing??? That Nicasil is hard and like AdrenalineAddict and ElectroTech said you must use the correct one. It has diamond stones.

Why cant you use a ball hone is what I call it, or the deglazing hone mentioned above? It seems to work to me

A ball hone will not expose issues that a fixed stone will, like out of round or low spots that will require cylinder replacement. I do not like ball hones in anything that is suspect nor 2 strokes with ports for those little balls to smack against possibly chipping the nicasil. I like useing a 4 stone setup instead of 2 with 2 wipers, you do have to be very careful and only break the glaze as the nicasil is very thin.
