Custom built tunnel. Budget Nytro build

I wanted to make some billet upper idler wheels but i didnt have any material and im running out of time to get this thing done. I took the stock plastic ones and made a program that looked like the billet wheels i have in the back. Lighter than aluminum, free and easy.. if you have the equipment.

Brake Rotor

So this summer i took my car up to Brainerd International Raceway and my 3rd lap around i smoked my stock brakes. I bought new rotors and milled the outside and slotted them for better cooling.
When i had my sled apart i thought why not do it to that too

guages

Put on my wideband AFR, boost and water temp guages. Used individual pods with the left over GoPro mounts i had. I was planning on putting them on the bars but im afraid they'll break off.

OH WOW........

First off, you have a lot euipment to do this work.
Second off, you have a lot more skill than I to pull it off.

Incredible work.

back to the drawing board

My wife and I went up north to get some initial miles on this thing before I go out west. Made it a few miles before breaking it! I jumped a driveway, landed pretty hard and knew right away what happened. I was nervous about my drop brackets from the beginning. Ive already designed a much stronger set and I'll post pictures of my fix as soon as I get them done.

As long as we made the 2 hour drive I decided not to just load up and go, I rode on the back of my wifes phazer mtx the rest of the day. That poor suspension is not made for 2.

I guess I forgot to put any updates on snowest. I have most of the stuff up on totallyamaha. I'll go from last year up to current.

from the last post where I wrecked the drop brackets, i made some new ones out of steel. Much stronger but a little heavier than I wanted.

weak rear tunnel

I used 5052 .100 aluminum to make the tunnel, i should have ordered some 6061 since its much stiffer but we had the 5052 in stock at work. I thought just by picking up on the rear of the sled that my tunnel seemed weak so I came up with this reinforcement that I riveted underneath

oil leak!

Found my oil leak. The alum fitting that goes into the head and feeds oil to the turbo broke. This is the second one that failed on me. Its a 4AN to M8X1.25 and I can only find aluminum ones and no local places carry them.

I didnt want to wait for a week to get another crappy aluminum one that will probably break again so I made my own out of 303 stainless steel on a manual lathe. It took a couple hours but I dont have to worry about this one failing.

Finished product

I wasn't going to let such a "minor" hiccup ruin a good day of riding so I did what anyone would do. Went to the bar, had a few drinks, found a Sawzall and cut off what I spent a few months buiding!

There wasn't damage to anything structural so instead of redoing the entire tunnel, I decided just to design an extension for it. Added some ribs down the center to make it stiffer.

Cut square and ready for the extension.
At this point I also clocked the turbo because I'm now adding a rear mount intercooler.

Intercooler mockup

All cut out, the triangles in it are for air flow through the intercooler. just something you dont see everyday.

Polished and bent ready for install

Powdercoated and back in place with the new intercooler mounted.

I went to Cooke City the day after getting this back together, aired out of a bowl and bent the new extension slightly :frusty:
It was my last ride of the year so it went straight to storage, plus at that point, I'd had enough fun working on it for one year

Its a new year!

Ok, if anyone is still following this thread or is interested, I just pulled my nytro out of storage and have plans for quite a few changes this year. As done before I'll take photos of the progress. Not 100% sure what is all going to be done but here is my list so far of what I'm planning on building/doing to it.

My battery is dead so I'm going with the YTZ7S lightweight battery and making new brackets.

Removing the radiator and machining my own billet under tunnel cooler.

Making a new re-designed tunnel extension

I got a light weight hood that I'm putting on and deleting my headlight. Adding LED lights. Anyone know whats good to use?

I'm going to try and build a set of A-Arms for it to move the spindles forward. possibly doing billet alum arms... not sure yet. Stay tuned for details:face-icon-small-hap

I might be pulling the engine out and putting in a head shim and arp head studs. Cam position change too?? I'm going to have to do some research on this still. I'm looking to run as much hp on pump gas as possible. (at sea level and elevation) Someone please let me know what has worked for them!)

Adding a fuel injector inline so I can run more boost. ( I have to try and get ahold of Ken from Push Turbo)

Might be installing a bigger fuel pump and pressure regulator.

If there's money and time left over, I am going to build my own Meth injection kit.

Anyone have feedback or input on any of this?
How about any ideas for me on what to build next?
Thanks guys, pics to follow

Cool project!

FYI, If you ever need to bend 6061 again, a little trick I've learned is to anneal the material with a rosebud torch. Get it good and hot, almost to the point you think it might could melt, then let it air cool completely. It could still crack on you if you try to bend it with a tight radius, but overall seems to work good.

As a machinist myself, I love to see what others come up with for their personal projects :)

Thanks, I was looking on their website yesterday. I was thinking about the two round lights until I came across the one you have. I was concerned with it not being bright enough, or not giving me enough lead time with 200+hp. Good to hear.

Thanks Turbo800, when I make the tunnel extension that will be made out of .063 6061 so that should bend just fine, I'm hoping! I think I'm going to give the bumper brackets one more try out of 6061 and heat the living crap out of it before bending. Or I may try to redesign it into being a 2 piece that is split at the bend. Wont look quite as good but it may save the frustration on breaking another set..
