Cummins Tech's!!! Need some help.......

I'm having a little issue with my 07 5.9 Cummins w/60,000 miles.

No Warranty and No codes coming up.

Problen is, at a low idle particularly when I first start it up. The truck surges from 750rpm until it is idled up to 1600-1800rpms and will blow a slight puff of white smoke when I first accelerate. The truck has a Bullydog Intake, 4" Stainless turbo back exhaust and Bullydog triple dog downloader. The downloader is uninstalled and the truck was in the dealership today to have the ECM updated to the newest calibration. The truck still surges but only at startup then it goes away. I thought the white smoke could've been coolant but the coolant level in the reservoir hasn't lowered at all. The fuel filter gets replaced every oil change and stanadyne additive used. I'm not thinking it is the injection pump as it isn't a continuous problem. I'm going to take it in soon to have a pressure test done to the injection system to see if I have a leaky injector or if there is a chance there is air in the fuel supply but would that cause it to smoke white? The injectors have never been touched so I'm sure the protrusion is correct and the hold downs are tight as the problem just flared up. It isn't knocking (or making any unusual sounds) or burning oil and the oil pressure is normal. I was convinced it was a mapping issue or ECM calibration issue which is not the case. The truck is a daily driver with no off-road use.

Any ideas guys?

Looking for Answers Only. Not any, You shouldn't have bought a Cummins remarks.

white smoke can be fuel as well,a small puff of white when cold, a little black if the motor is warmed up. only true way to check them out is to pull them out pop test, and inpect the tips.whats the rail pressure at?fuel pressure? cause if its stable then that would indicate an injector issue to me. my 04.5 has 1 bad injector and has the same symptoms as yours.Ive been watching ebay for a 90 hp set.

Not sure on rail or fuel pressure yet. Its gotta go in to get pressure checked. White cold and Black hot makes sense but, I've had it happen in the middle of a long drive, It'll surge and puff white but if I ease into it, it won't happen. Seems to mainly happen on heavy acceleration when passing.

Looking at going to an Industrial Injection modified CP3 and 90hp injectors also but the funds aren't there yet.

It's to bad you don't have a gauge on the rail yet, could be a bad lift pump too? Sounds like a fuel problem tho, leaking or cracked injector.

That could be but the 07 has a pusher style pump in the tank, no lift pump. I guess when the fuel pressure gets checked we'll find out.

I'm leaning towards it being a leaky injector and the fuel isn't atomizing causing the white smoke.

My 99 had an intake conversion done by a dodge dealer ship back in 2001, Along with the stock LP on the block it only pushed 6-7 PSI to the injection pump at altitude. I've got an Airdog 150 and see 14-16 which drops to 11-12 at 11,500 feet.

If you where running your Bully dog on Crazy larry with a stock fuel system, you could have damaged a injector from running it out of fuel (low rail pressure). I guess well all know once you get it checked out!

Thanks, that could be also. I've had it on that setting once, I've been in a simular dodge on that setting and felt it run out of fuel and cut out. I didn't feel that at all with mine but it still could have happened. I'm not a big fan of these junk bosch injectors, of course 60K isn't an uncommon mileage to have them crap out I've been told.

Well I found out my 07 still has a 100,000 mile engine warranty from the dealership I bought it from. Problem was the dealership is 200 miles from where I live so I was trying to give my local dealership business, they kept dicking me around saying it only had a 36,000 mile engine warranty, so need to say they won't be getting anymore business from me. But in all cases it's getting fixed under warranty. Thanks to all who tried to help out.

With the changes in dealers around here, I'm not sure anybody has a warranty left. That or you have ot fly to europe to use it.

On second thought obama said everything is ok.............what was I thinking

I think my dealership here just doesn't want to mess with it, don't know with the idiots working there if I'd want them to work on it anyways. I've gotta go in for reconstruction surgeory on my elbow in Missoula next week so the truck will go back to the original dealership it came from at the same time.

Well, At least they didn't screw you out of your warranty!! There are a few dealers here in CO that will scan the ECM looking for footprints left by a chip or down loader, and tell you to go F-yourself.

My dealership did. Couldn't find anything when I pulled the programmer out to bring it in.

you will have to find a good dealer that will atleast pull the injectors. I tried to get factory warranty on mine but they said there was nothing wrong. its too bad cummins won't work on the common rail dodges or I would have taken it there.

The dealership I'm taking it to, I'm confident will work on it. They have an 06 in their shop right now with the injectors out on it doing the same thing. If not, I'm gonna spring for a modified CP3 and 90hp injectors.

I have seen a few issues with injectors giving issues until the motor is up to temp. Dont think it is an FCA or pressure relief vavle, issues would be consistant.

The thing is with injector issues there are numerous things that can happen and will give many diffrent results.

sounds like a cp3 pump issue, mine was doing the same thing, took it to industrial injection, put a 33% cp3, with 90 hp injectors. now I its going back in to get head studs and twin turbos. Call Cody/Dallas at Industrial and he can help you out with the problem better than a dealer

I've already been in contact with them. Its gonna go to the dealer first since its still under warranty. Then if it still gets nowhere, aftermarket is where its at. I just don't wanna dish out the money if the engine/injection system is still under warranty.

Anybody run the DDP Dynomite 50hp or 90hp injectors? How comparable are they to Industrial Injections injectors?

They are OK, have a few buddies that have had problems with em though. Remember, they are just extrude honing the tips, pushing an abrasive through them to open the holes up more. It works but there are better options.

If you wanna get the best money can buy F1 diesel EDM's are the only way to go IMHO!
