CTEC2 Engine Issues on the way?

My point exactly....They’re motors, crap happens. Ride what you want.

To claim a ctec2 epidemic is just silly.

Seems to be more Ctec engine problems in the mountain sleds.Mostly rod bearing and some piston skirts.I hope these updates on 2020 engine direct more oil to the bottom end and maybe a change to the piston. These engines rock i could never go back to the old 800.I had 2400 kms on my 18 1500 on Alpha.

The zukis had skirt problems too in the mountains. I've seen many of them drop shirts between 1,800-2500 miles

I can't help but think these twins are pushed to their max to get every last pony out of them. lifespan probably isn't first priority?

I mean they require 2 smoker oil that costs $50 bux a gallon? I remember back in the day when golden spectro was the bomb and I certainly didn't have 50 bones a gallon for my kx125!

am I wrong to equate them to race car engines?

I think u are spot on.
Not meant for 10,000 miles for sure...

couple of things come to mind, with the alpha, i'm using 1/2 to 3/4 throttle a whole lot more the the time than wide open, hence less wear and stress....another point that despite what dealers or anyone else says, good oiling makes for a happy, long term engine...and with that in mind, i run 1oz of oil per gallon of gas, drops oil ration from 60-70 to 1 down to 40-45 to 1, been that way for 800 miles now and i see no problems with runability and it makes me feel a little better about the longevity....:face-icon-small-sho

I don't run a Cat but it is well known that some of them suck in snow/water due to poor fit and finish in the air box area. So if this happens, water gets in the motor and if it does not damage pistons it can easily end up on lower end bearings. Now you park your sled for a few weeks and any rust in these bearings will cause a rough spot that shortens lifespan. These new motors use very little oil and this is good for the environment but leaves little buffer for these conditions. It would be nice if the manufacturers would give us a shut down procedure prior to storage similar to Ski-Doos summer storage mode. It can be much simpler though with one button press to start over-oiling prior to shutdown. Maybe we have to bring back the old primers except hook them to the oil tank rather than the fuel tank.

Nobody claimed there was an "epidemic". Simply that there are enough reports of engine failures to raise the question. Of course there are going to be some. No way to really tell how many, not for the Polaris 850 either for that matter. I did pull an 850 out last week though:(… Other than snow ingestion related, doesn't seem to be much of a common thread. Cat did update the motor though. I'm always puzzled by the "they all have issues so shut up and ride mentality". You realize there are differences in reliability, right? I personally like information so I can best avoid the tow rope...don't really care what brand it is or if it climbs the highest.

You read things much different than I write them. Told no one to shut up.
Wasn’t really going literal with epidemic, sorry to confuse you.

Ive seen more broke down alphas than i have 850 poo's meaning ive only seen 1 of both brands break down lol about a month and a half ago a rideing buddy of mines top end let go... the dealer couldent really give him an exact answer to what happend but one hole looked oil starved and there was metal transfur from the piston to the jug... the mag side wasent far behind eather he got a whole new motor out of the deal and i got the bragging rights pulling him out with my 850 :face-icon-small-hap
