cr500 snowbike on one radiator?

I'm wondering if I can get away bypassing the left hand radiator altogether. Anyone heard of someone doing this before?

Ive done it before on a kx250 after a crash, rode for a week with the hoses looped together.seem to work fine without boiling over.this was in fall weather .

yes I would actually recommend it, bikes cant keep enough heat in the pow, I ran 1 on my wr450 with a thermostat, and it ran 140 on the hard trails but still wouldnt get over 100 in the pow, I have a kx500 that runs a thermostat, gotta get a temp gauge this year for it

I'm going to try the Thermo-Bob stats with bypass. He is going to make 165F stats with bypass. Right now he makes 195F for the KLR bikes. The KTM 2 stroke stats are 55C which is too cool. I'm bettin the 165 is the money for the 500. See how it pans out !

thanks guys, thats helpful info. I'm going to hook a thermostat to the right hand rad with a bypass. trying to fit a thermostat with a bypass and spliting to two rads has been a challenge. I succeeded with a ktm stat thinking it's better than nothing even if it is cold for a two stroke, then picked up a large dessert tank and can't fit that on now.:face-icon-small-frochecking out thermobob, possibly there is another way to put this puzzle together.

Contrary to popular belief and the MFG's warranty dept, 2-strokes love to be cold. real cold.

I dont like to run my stuff hotter than about 90F. never had one issue. just warm it up properly.

There is a guy on CR500 Riders from Norway I believe. He runs the dual 55C stats for ice racing. Says it works well. No bypass. I would think with all the snow it may or may not still be enough. Not sure if I buy into 90F operating temp. That's pretty cool.

cool heat

Just now putting a thermostat on my yz250 snobike project. Not sure yet what thermostat temp I'm going to run, got to rummage through my sled junk pile.

What I do know from 30 years of tuning 2 stroke sleds, no thermostat is a real pain in the butt. You can't have good jetting without constant engine temperatures and better yet is constant engine temp and constant pipe temps. 125-135 degrees F is ideal. Engines will last, no power loss, no deto issues, easy to jet and warm up engine.

Yes those temps seem ideal to me as well. I am going to get the Thermobob stats. The bypass will work very good. His info on his website is a interesting read. He makes his stats for the KLR at 90C. Thats a little warm im guessing and he has said that he will machine the housing for the stock KLR stat which is 70C (165F). I think with cooling effect it should be right around the 130F range.

Maybe Mtn Doo can chime in. I believe he ran a KTM 70C stat in his KX500. I believe he said his temps were in the 110F-130F range. I can't seem to find his pm. The problem with a stock CR500 is it has dual outlets out of the head. I'm gonna run 2 stats at 70C with bypass. I'll watch the temps then rearrange if needed.

Hey guys. I ran the 70C KTM stat on the Monster. It warmed up quickly and ran consistently in the 130 "ish" range. Those temps were super for a 2-stroke. Don't try to get up to the 180/190 range like the 4-strokes prefer. I did not want the 180/190 temps the modern 4-strokes run in the summer. No gas in oil issues etc to throw in the equation. On dyno pulls, the 2-stroke is most consistent and produces it's best numbers a little cooler than the 4-strokes. I would use a trail tech thermometer and watch your temps and try some experiments? Shoot for that 110/130 range. The 70C hit the mark for me last year on a Service KX500AF. I liiked at the dual 50's on the Honda. Very clean and easy install. If they hold the temps in the 120 range, I would use them. I discussed the Thermo Bob idea with the Guy there. I tried a "recirc" style and found the recirc line kept temps cold just by circulating fluid. The main stat would not open. It is worth more testing though.? Super nice design. Be aware they are "huge". Automotive size units.

It would be nice if a guy could fit the 70C stats in the 55C single in/single out housings if the bypass proves to be to much. Does anyone have a 70C stat that they can measure ? I don't have one here. Wahler is the company they use for the stats but i can't seem to find specs for them.
