CR500/KX500 Chain Setups ?

Got my first ride in with the 13/17 - 17/17 gearing and would say it's a decent improvement over the 14/20 - 17/17 that I ran last season. I can now haul some serious azz down the trail, 5th gear is tall and I can't pull it unless going on flat ground or down hill. Hoping with the addition of the smartcarb and their advertised 10% gain in HP that I will be able to pull 5th a little easier if the carb ever arrives. The snow that I rode in on Sunday was about 6"-12" of sugar with a pretty hard ice layer underneath making for some serious traction. With that much traction I had trouble pulling third on steep hills but 2nd is now tall enough that it worked very well for the steep stuff. I think once there is more powder I will be able to keep track speed up in third and pull it very well.

So basically a 13/17 Primary and a 17/17 chain case seems to be a good ratio to start with for a built 500 2-stroke?

I only have one ride on this gearing setup but it felt really good to me. Considering the limited gear combinations for the CR500 without running a half link I think this combo will be hard to beat.

Are both of the sprocket's in the chain case the same where they bolt to the shaft. I only see a 17 input sprocket on the parts diagram online.

That gearing is a .0357 final. I run .036 final. In spring its probably the gearing to have. In the deep snow I'm thinking the .034 will get 3rd even better. However I'm not gonna change it until i get my Fatty pipe and VF2 setup. That will give the bike even more jam jam. I will keep my 14 tooth front !

i'm running 14/17, 17/20

kx500af ported, bored carb

1st is useless and it will pull 4th most places except on a real big climb in powder. 5th is pretty slow on the trail unless youre rev'd right out.

gonna try the lazy way and switch the chaincase to 20/17 and see how that works.

I bet if you get in the .034-.035 you will like that better. I'm .036 (CR500) and i think its just a little tall in the deep. My 1st and 2nd are awesome though LOL. After some more testing im gonna go back 14/16 and then whatever gives me the .034-.035.
