CR500/KX500 Chain Setups ?

14/16 should work without the half link. I'd like to see the Regina setup. Also im gonna put a call into Renthal. They used to make one

If you have a half link, throw an extra cotter style one or two in your pack.

We did some home made kits last year and those things failed on us well before any other chain parts would.

maybe your using better kits, just a simple part to throw in the pack just in case.

Good advise. If the half link is the route I go I will buy two of them.

i kept a handful in my pack, ours were cheap ones, but it seemed like every few rides they would snap. im sure there are some nicer ones then you get at the hardware store.

The cotter pin style doesnt do it for me at all. The Tsubaki looks way better imo. I will carry 2 master links, extra half link kit, some extra chain and a chain breaker.

If Regina makes one that maybe a good combo as well. Maybe the Renthal will still be available.

So I talked with Regina chain and they do make a half link kit for their 135 ESBORO chain in a 520 size. Cody Racing in the USA deals with it so they say. That is another option I suppose.

Renthal claims they never have made a half link. Booh lol

Lets hope it works. Im not holding my breath lol.

The true Tsubaki chain and link looks very good the more i think about it. MtnDoo used the cotter pin deal and his was fine. The Tsubaki has a 7000lb tensile so it will work just fine.

If not then it will be a 16 tooth gear. Then ill gear it a little taller than MtnDoo since it has more power than MtnDoos did LOL :face-icon-small-sho

What kind of gearing would the 16 cs come out to? Does the miller motor really put out more power than that kx lol?

I was referring to the 16 tooth driven not counter shaft. You kinda lose a couple final ratios with the 14/16. Too bad TS doesn't make a 18 tooth lol.

Haha I hope it does! I'm going to be running pretty much the setup you are, Im hoping to at least leave my 4 stroke buddies in the dust(snow). So from what I understand you have to run a half link with almost any decent gearing setup?

Are you building a 500 ? I have tried the 13,14/17. The 15 should be the same. If you go one tooth on the back larger or smaller such as the 16 it will eliminate the half link. 1 tooth on the cs is like 2 on the rear. So technically every tooth in the cs is like two in the back so the chain will do the same thing with every size cs. Need a 18 tooth lol. Its just Crs and KXs to my knowledge. I am working on something else but haven't tested yet.

Ya I'm building 500 in a 03 cr250 chassis. I've still got a few things to do to make it snow ready but should be done in late December. That makes sense I wonder if there is anyone who will machine a sprocket for the timbersled? Then again I'm not really opposed to running to a half-link, just against sinking anymore money than I need to into this thing lol.

Talked to Daryl at DOC. Was asking him about their adjuster that may take more slack out of the chain than the stock TS. Its more or less a slider type adjuster instead of the chincy sprocket.

He mentioned they are testing a adjustable jackshaft and hope to have a kit to buy in next couple of weeks. You will be able to move the shaft forward or back. This could be a solution to the half link.

This kit will also get rid of the stock chain tensioner. As well there will be some sort of chain guide at the front to protect the swing arm tube.

Just some more info

Got my 15 tooth CS sprocket and finally bolted my new kit up to my bike and found out that a 15-17 combo will not work on a CR500 w/out the half link. I did find that a 13-17 combo works very well though and after looking at my gearing spreadsheet found that a 13-17 / 17-17 will give me a .036 final drive ration so I am going to try that and see how it works for me. I have ran the 1/1 gear ratio in the chain case before with two 17's and it requires removal of the tentioner and two of the stand off's that the chain case cover bolts to. Of course this requires me to buy another 17 tooth sprocket from timbersled.

As for having sprockets made I looked into having Iron man sprockets build some for me when Timbersled first came out with the Mountain Horse and was using aluminum for their sprockets. I sent them one of my sprockets and they said that if I ordered $1k worth that they could produce them for $55/each (I believe that was for a 20 tooth). So I know that would be an option and they could make any tooth sprocket we wanted. If you haven't bought Iron man sprockets for use on dirt you are wasting your money buying anything else they are high quality and guaranteed for 100 hr of use or 1 year.

That's weird. I couldn't make a 13/17 work on mine. Still needed a half link. Interesting.

Are the sprockets made of steel or aluminum ?
