At Baker yesterday with CoyoteGirl and Euge, messing around at hood hill, checking out the conditions and playing in the sun.
Climbed up the little "short cut" hill at the end of railroad grade a couple of times...fun little chute to scoot up and down.
So we decide to go back to the look out...CG takes off up the "short cut" chute and hits a trench and hooks right and looses control. She tries to dig it in because she's now above the rocks....for about 5 seconds it looks like she's got it stopped...then slowly the sled turns out and is headed straigt down towards the rocks, WITH HER ON IT!!! She gets about 5 feet from the rocks and finally bails off, but too late. Her speed is too fast to stop herself. OH SH!T!!!! My heart stopped...she hit the rocks and bounced across them, about 30 feet to the edge of the cliff and off she goes. Drops about 15-20 feet to a snow pillow, slides down that and off another 10-15 foot drop into the crevass between the snow and the rock face and disapears!!!
Matt is at the bottom of the hill thinking the sled and Brandy will be sliding down the hill, not realizing she is in the crevass.
I go tearing up the hill and stick my sled next to the crevass and start yelling for Brandy and she answers that she's OK....So I get to her and she's sitting up where she landed...shaken up, taking stock. I check her over and she's got a banged up shoulder/arm on her left side, and a banged up hand on the other from where she bounced over the rocks.
Matt gets to us and we check he over from head to toe. Dont find any other injuries. About 20 minutes have passed and we need to get her out of the crevass because its cold and wet from the snow melt coming down the rocks. We get her up to the edge and make a shelf for her to sit. Get some food and water into her and wait for her to be less shocky and I slide her down to level ground. Lay out my emergency blanket (who says you dont need the survival gear in the spring!!!) for her to lay down on. Get her to eat some more food and drink some more water and now she's in much better shape.
Now we turn to her sled. Its straight up and down, pointing tail down in the crevass, with just the ski's tips sticking above the edge. WE start by digging about a 4-5 feet gap in the edge of the snow. Then Mtn Mike On Boost and Gary (i think) show up and help us lift her up and over and I coast her down to the bottom.
Brandy will post the pics we took. There is one of me standing on the snow pillow for perspective.
Luckily, she's mostly just bruised up. She has a small fracture in her right hand in the metacarpal of her ring finger (the bone between the finger joint and the wrist joint). And a BIG bruise in the middle of her right butt cheek!!!
BIG THANKS to Matt (euge). When the sh!t hits the fan, he is DEFINITELY someone I want around.
Also thanks to Mike and Gary for helping get the sled out of the crevass and sticking with us as we got the sled and Brandy off the mountain.
