Cooke City...D-bag central???

So we just got back from Cooke. Our second trip there this year, we always go during the week to avoid the crowds, but my god are there some d-bags there.

We were out around round lake minding our own business and some turbo powered moron decided to come over and show us how cool him and his sled was. My nephew was doing whips off this drift at the top of this little hill and we were all at the bottom waiting for him to do another one. Captain America with his turbo P.O.S. came over, looked at all of us and headed right up where my nephew was going to be landing. He did a huge wheeling going up the drift, almost flipped over backwards and turned out almost getting highsided on the way down. I waved the checkered flag for him and we took off to ride another of the 1000 hills available out there. Luckily my nephew wasn't coming over the other side of the drift or someone might have got hurt.

Then one of the guys in our group was getting ready to do a drop off a rock face. Another "winner" came over where we were sitting, did a 180 degree carve that made me think he was Burandt or Brown and rode off. It was so freaking cool I almost shat myself...

I just don't get it, we all ride the same type of equipment and watch the same movies. For some reason it seems like everyone has to show how awesome they are. I have only been to Cooke 3 times and it seems more prevalent there than anywhere else I have ridden. If I wanted to watch a pro rider I would pay to ride with Burandt, Brown, Kyle, Entz, Adams or Rasmussen. I don't expect to have all the hills to myself, but if my group comes up to a hill and there is another group killing it we move on to one of the other available areas to ride.

Rant over...thanks for reading

I call it the interstate up there. I was there couple three weeks ago and counted 100 sleds out my motel window JUST out my window ! And it was a highly traveled road every where you go. I think its getting lots of traffic this year because of the lack of snow else where. We saw lots of peps up at round lake

X2

Cooke is always nice when everywhere else has snow. The problem is that Cooke usually always has snow, so when it's scarce elsewhere it brings EVERYONE there, which tends to bring a handful of D-bags, and tends to track up every square inch of real estate.

I've been up the last few weeks and I swear the entire states of Minnesota and Wisconsin are in Cooke City.

Cooke used to be the only place we went. Started going there in 97 with a short track mxz. Haven't been there in two years, other than in early Nov this year. Got burned out going there. It is still fun when there isn't a pile of people, but that seems hard to come by anymore. Lots of wing nuts climbing spots that they shouldn't be on.

You know I dont think it matters where you are those guys are all there. I have to LOL couple times reading your post. It is SO true. It does bring up a certain un-said ettiquit that should be brought up.

As big as the mountains are we are all going to stumble into the same play area or hill climb place. When we do and there is a group there we politely wave and putts on out of there. If we really want to play there we just wait till they have moved on. We dont frequent the main attraction hill climb area much but when we do those rules are off. Its like the main sand box and anything goes (safety first of course)

Anyway good topic!

I agree with much said here. I also think part of the problem, along with the lack of snow elsewhere, is that Cooke is wrapped in Wilderness areas so we can't spread out KWIM? Tending to bump into each other more often. The other thing is, going there we are surrounded by others of like mind, not having tree huggers look down their noses at us "dirty snowmobilers"
At the end of the day at Soda Butte or Minors you could always say "HEY, who's the duchetard on the XXX sled out by round lake today who thought he was cool?" LMAO! That would be funny to watch! :cheer2:

We're from MN and will be there Feb 16-20 so hopefully we don't get any "flattering" titles HAHA! But, don't be too hard on us, it's our 15 YO's first time to the mountains! YIPPIE!

Sled greeting

Why can't snowmobilers just adopt a greeting kind of like the motorcycle people on the highway? Seated on your sled, subtle one handed wave or head nod perhaps? I don't mind Cooke. It manages to catch most of the traffic headed to areas I would ride otherwise. The added traffic helps out a town that would otherwise die in the winter, so it's a win-win. Cooke City's best riding is in the spring when they get a huge fast moving storm that will dump about 2 feet in 12 hours. Most people don't have the time to mobilize to get there, or it is in April when the crowds are low...

I agree that sledders don't need to ride on top of each other, but on the same note, if you're hucking it over a hill or dropping a cliff where you know there are a lot of riders, you should be using a spotter. Glad to hear no body was hurt.

No kidding. We have gone there in April and no one is around. Kind of nice if you can catch a storm.

April/May in Cooke is THE BEST!

Fo Sho 99% of the time , the D- bags are from out of state

it's the person - not the sled, don't take your anger out on the Turbo Sled. It's addicting like crack. once you got boost you will never go back.

we ride cooke at least twice a year. might find tracks or see some sleds from a ways away, but never have we had these issues of being on top of each other. even when town is packed. We're lucky enough to ride with guys that have been going to cooke for 25 years, winter and summer. We know plenty of safe ground to play on. So maybe you dont actually have a problem of running into douche bags, maybe you just dont get far enough away from the trail if you're running into people that often. There are a couple areas I can think of that never have any tracks in them, or when they do, its only two and they ride past the good stuff or turn around and leave. 8 trips to Cooke in the last 3&1/2 years and the only douche bags I've run into are in town or on the Daisy trail. Never been disappointed on a Cooke trip. Don't be a douche and ride on top of everyone else's tracks, or right next to them. If you're too close to too many other people, you're too close to the trail. Sorry not sorry.

Guess What!! With more and more wilderness being pounded up our rear ends those folks who have problems with people are really going to be miserable. I would recommend finding a new sport or simply staying home. I believe in the more the merrier, more competition, more good folks to meet, there's alot of really fantastic life loving people on the mountain.

i crossed a twenty two mile lake today...only two other sledders on it and they were ice fishing...

i still stayed well clear of them just with a big wave from a distance..they wanted their tranquility...and i just wanted to get to some powder collected in the lower pines..

and when the occasion is that i do stop for a chat i always coast slowly to them ..there is nothing to prove...i know im the best with the best machine....hahaha..
