While I completely agree they need to raise the debt limit and raise taxes on the above $500K per year, I can't help but wonder about all those AAA ratings given to the toxic's...

Shouldn't everyone have to make consessions in the time of need? I think the right wing better wake up if they expect to win in 2012. They are leaving the middle class fast.

I doubt any one will be waking up any time soon if at all .And it soon will be have it all or not at all.Will that save us? i mean raising taxes on 500,000 and above and the barowing power?If your going to do the tax raising what not leave the debt ceiling the same or better yet lower it? The more you can spend to more you want, How do you break that cycle?Is it really even possible for our country to even get out of debt?

How much of the federal budget is welfare and free healthcare for the poor? What percentage?
How much do you think waste really is? What percentage of the budget?
Does anyone know of any actual numbers for these things? Or are we all just guessing?
As to the debt ceiling, IMO, it is just a number and it means nothing. Congress has the power to reduce the debt or increase the debt based on their budgets. I don't understand why we need a balanced budget amendment, or a special debt ceiling congress can reduce the debt and balance the budget without these things.

If the debt ceiling means nothing then why is it a big and why do we need to make it higher? I can't beleive it means nothing. as far as statistics i do not know those numbers. I' am just guessing. But i'm just going off what i see. Today the way things are i think a warming shed and bomb proof crapper up on a mountian that was paid for with tax payer dollars is waste. i think walking paths that are paid for with tax payer dollars are waste. These type of things are going on all over the country not just here in a town of 900 that i live in . Even here these are just the tip of the ice berg. Don't get me wrong i enjoy all these things as well BUT in these times we do not have the money to be doing that. In these time many people have had to tighten there belts and do with out things we took for granted in the past,but it's time to do it on a mass scale. since the debt ceiling means nothing why are old people panicking about the ss checks that they count on or will the credit of our country get downgraded? Oh it means something. As far as fre heath care for the poor well i know lots of people that have coverage they do not pay for and go to the doctor when ever needed but then have a snowmobile to ride? the tax payers are paying for that,There paying for people to trade food stamps and comoditys for drugs and other things. You would never be able to come up with a number for that stuff but just looking around with your eyes wide open you can plainly see gobbs of waste out there.
Do you have a debt limit for your family / houshold? If not why not? If you don't, are you just borrowing non stop? If not, why not?
You could come up with the total number of money that the govt has paid out for health care and compare that to the total govt income. You could do the same with the food stamp program. example, if the total food stamp program is only 1% of the total govt budget, it is a pretty small issue when talking about reducing our govt debt. In just a quick google searches, it looks like food stamps are only 1% of the budget. So if you cut the ENTIRE PROGRAM, it would not make hardly any difference, let alone if you just cut the waste / fraud.
IMO, the problem is much much bigger then cutting waste and cutting welfare.

Yes we do have a limit because we do not want to have all our money going to that debt with nothing left for our future enjoyment. I guees i could get more credit cards and charge more stuff and mak the min payment but even then it would get to where i have nothing to look forward to except paying the bill what a drag that would be.
I agree the 1% will not fix any thing it has to be many different things to fix it if it's even fixable. cutting waste and fraud is part of that picture as well but still not the answer either. there are a multitude of things that need to happen to even start to make a dent . But you can not just ignore it or barrow your way out of it. I do not know what the answer here is but squandering money all over the place that had to barrow does not make any sence what so ever

The amount of waste is unknown...a guessing game. I have heard many estimates between 10-50%. Think of what it takes for a dollar of yours to work it's way through the IRS and by the time it works its way back to some program it passes through MANY hands that all take their piece of the pie. ANY program that can be handled at the state, county or local level has the potential to be more efficient based solely on the fact there will be fewer people eating from the pie.

I see how large companies get treated by smaller vendors also....paying outrageous prices for items than can be had at Home Depot for a fraction of the cost. Sort of like the $9,000 allen wrenches for the military. The guy paying the bill has no clue what the item is he is paying for....they just see numbers and their job is to pay the bill.
I just saved my lab about $45,000 by ordering Plexiglass and doing triple pane soundproof windows myself rather than having an outside vendor do it....less than $5000 vs close to $50K for 6 windows!! ...the funny thing is I have to keep it on "the down low" so no one complains I am doing someone elses job! Unions-
I can only imagine what our federal government would pay for these windows!!

As for the topic at hand, what people don't understand is the debt limit must be raised to pay for items already purchsed, not for the future.
