Confused? Whats happening to the 8's???

I'm just wondering what is going on with all the 800 complaints. As far as racing goes and all the riding I have done this year, they are working great. I have 3 assaults and they run awesome. Everyone said to beware the new cat but we have been out running them so far, hands down. I am a die hard Polaris guy and love my assaults so I thought I would dig a little deeper. Knock on wood, I have had zero issues with any of mine. I have one of my '09 for sale and cant seem to get anyone to take it. I figure it must have to do with the issues that are on here. Are all the problems coming from a pipe or messing with them? Is it only stockers? There has to be a solution and it would be nice to try to figure this out. We all are sooner or later gonna upgrade and with all this stuff going around, its just gonna bite us all in the butt. So, like I said, I'm just curious whats up because on the racing part of it, all i know is that we have a good product and are making good power and things are just working.
Thanks
PR

racer, most of these sleds rip..but , some have some issues..some have alot of issues...mostly it is the fuel system is lean at 4000 and 6000 rpm areas...then they are 5-10% rich up top...some are also having issues with voltage regulators going south and taking the ecu(sounds like most are due to a short in the harness that fries the VR)..when the vr goes..alot of the time it leans the motor and boom also...

Do the ones that are changing the fuel map with the PC5 having troubles? Just makes ya wondering because of all the negativity on here. If something like that fixes the problem, a fuel map needs developed so everyone is happy.
I'm just blown away because of the luck I've had and how happy I am with all of mine. I have an 800 Improver that was built by Jack Struthers and it is the hardest pulling sled I've ever been on. Thats my favorite to ride but because of all the work to it, it's not practical.

A fuel controller is a start but still will not fix a bunch of these issues people (like myself) are having...

I Have a 2010 assault with pc5 and the january 14th map.Im having problems with mine idiling.

You're in the race program, you get the ones that will rip any day of the week and every week for that matter.

Well, maybe thats why I have di this thread. I am very happy how my stuff works so I was wondering what was going on with others. Like I said earlier, the negativity I think has lead to people not interested in these sleds. I'm just shocked for the price I'm asking, that I can't move my sled and I think that shows on how people are feeling. I am a Polaris man and I always want to see them on top so I hope an open discussion might get some things figured out.

Well as long as polaris sticks their head in the sand .... all will jump ship!
I may show as newbe but have been snow checking sleds since 1996 and yp till this D8 i would have drawn blood over the brand!! but now they can stick it. never polaris again

Most sledders are forgiving by nature and loyal to their brand. But for those with repeat problems and now a tougher line on warranty claims Polaris will lose some loyal customers. I went through a much worse deal with a "Yellow brand", all were bad in 07. At this point many don't care if it's the dealer, the sled or even their mods, they are fed up.
The irony is that there are so many 8's that don't have issues. There are a lot of 8's in the snow in my area and very few problems-Is it the dealer setup, the altitude or luck....no one really knows!

Well RON the problem for me was not the dealer!! the problem is polaris poor build quality. shizzy wyo area rep!! and sled not worth fizzit!! Best and largest star dealer in wyoming. you seem to be a bit of a know it all??!! looking at your input in to others stuff!! YOU MUST BE A POLARIS REP?? Whats your story. the handeling of the problems is polaris problem. the problems are real!! and no way you can discount the update in the first place! it is real there is a problem. think you need to look a little closer to the beginning of all the these threds

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm just a guy that has been riding sleds (my passion) for a lot of years. I don't think a Polaris rep would have purchased a 2007 Doo and would be registered on DooTalk. If you want to see some real sled issues take a look at posts on DooTalk in 2007 under the Rev threads. I put more miles on my wifes sled than I got on my Doo.
What I said above is true, there don't seem to be many issues in this area. Those with problems are normally pretty vocal. I thought everyone was entitled to an opinion-if it doesn't agree with yours so what, why does that offend you?
The fact is Polaris had a problem and spent millions on a recall. Polaris is not the devil, just a large company with some good people and others not so good. I did read the start of this thread and it started out with the question "what's wrong with the 8's". You really didn't respond to the question so we don't know your issues. The sad thing is that the IQ is a great sled but not for those with serious problems.

Not all Polaris issues are negative

In my case, it's not the dealer. He usually knows more than the Polaris tech service he calls. I have an 08 D8 155. 99% of my sledding is done at around 10,000 altitude. Yeah, my sled had the "lean stumble" and went through about 3-4 reflashes. The occasional stumble was annoying, but the sled ran great all the other times, usually always doing 8300rpms during full pull. I had the recall/rebuild, then the CE light flashed. Dealer checked all sensors for correct electrical ranges. Went to Wyoming a couple of weeks ago, and it ran great. So, there really are 800's out there running just fine. I'm not saying that all the sleds run this well, but there are more people listing their problems than listing all the good things about their sleds. The problems are magnified by the fact that lots of sledders get to ride on only a couple trips a year, so if their sled fails, that kills the trip. I know it was a bummer a couple years ago when the crank snapped on my wife's sled just as we were heading out one morning. Had to hustle to find a rental, and then a big buck rebuild.

to Polaris-Racer

I have a 09 assualt with the engine update........... and it seems to be running decent but it is backfiring when i crack on it.... Just wondering if you have changed anything on your sleds?? Clutch weights? Gears? Because i cant keep up to a 700 rmk? ... or the 800 ski-doo... Are you running a Can on your sleds??

The backfiring is not good. That can be hard on reed pedals. Did you have a new fuel filter put in with updates. The fuel system runs 60psi of pressure and I have seen them backfire and slow down when they cant keep that pressure up. Also if the filter struggles, the fuel sytem can have a hard time keeping the volume up.
I have a '09 and an'10 stocker that have just clutching done.

Its not Polaris, Dealer, Rider, or aftermarket parts. Its that crap oil all of you use. My oil is the best oil of all oils. My dad used it and his dad before him. We even have hats that say our oils name on the front. All other oils are crap. My power valves are clean so my oil must be good. Discolored power valves mean your oil must be bad. There you have it.

Sorry.......I just couldn't help it. I'm about to get the unpaid guest boot anyway, wanted to go out with a chuckle. EW

Enough of the good Poo bad Poo,I want to here more about how Poo stacks up against the new M8, I've been all over the threads and this is the first I here of how we run against , DETAILS,details I want details, Please.
If Polaris made a beer that's the one I'de drink (hum, maybe, naw they wouldn't) PS in my area all Assualts are sold out and people are looking for some

I have a 09 Assault and my dad has a 09 RMK Shift... Both have stage 2 SLP setup (SLP Single, Air Intake, Clutching). The Assualt has a PCV and the Shift has a PCIII, both with the same mapping. And the sleds do not run the same. Why? Both were bought used. Both had the update done after we bought them.

We ran the Shift w/o the PCIII for the first trip (it had original 2010 mapping) and it ran ok except the DET light came on several times between 6000-6300. The Assault ran GREAT(spike to 8350RPM then drop and hold at 8200), it really ripped, except it had the lean stumble around 6200, then the VR went out and took out the ECU. Convinced a dealer to take them off a sitting 800 and Polaris warranteed everything but labor, both are out of warranty except 2nd yr engine that came with update). So I thought that was pretty cool. They also put in the new 1/14 flash to the Assault and Shift beacuse it was supposed to desensitize an oversensitive DET sensor, but then MY DET light would come on around 6200 and the Shifts still came on.

OK so I buy the PCV because I read all these forums and people say the DTR PCV is the way to go. So I put that on my Assault with Jim's map for my engine setup. The PCIII also gets put on the Shift with SLP's map... Neither sled will tach out. They struggle to hit 7900... Its sad when the stock 2003 RMK 700 can blow by the 09 Shift 800 with the SLP stuff on.

So we flash back to original 2010 mapping and leave the Power Commanders on. Load DTR maps into both. Go for a ride and the Assault runs fine, maybe slightly rich, and the Shift is lean, the DET light is flashing again at 6400. Plugs and Temp Sensor in pipe are both pretty light confirming its lean. But gas mileage is out the window on both of them... I mean like a 1/4 tank in probably 12 miles which is really going to suck when I go to WY in 2 weeks and I can't stay out and play cuz I have no fuel. So we fattened up mid-range on the Shift's PCIII and are going to go for another ride tonight to see if the DET light will come back on.

So two identical power plants... WHY do they need two different maps?

So thats pretty much the whole story for me. If anyone has helpful advice or ideas please speak up.

But that kind of shows you the confusion/aggravation that goes on with trying to fix this stuff. I think what most people are upset about is that Polaris has not been able to fix it for 2 years, the 08 800s had issues, 09 800 have issues, and I dont know anyone with a 10 so I can't say about those. Regardless, they've had it this long, the problem should be fixed. Its not. Most people don't have the facilities or equipment or time to troubleshoot, guess and check fixes to their $10K+ sled that should work consistently off the line. But still, I'm a diehard Polaris guy and I'm not going to jump ship.
